As part of a continuing program by the U.S. Geological Survey to collect and chemically analyze representative sales of U.S. coal, 45 samples of lignite and lignite-associated rocks were collected strip mines and drill holes in Freestone and Milam counties in central Texas, and in Harrison, Rains, Titus, Van Zandt, and Wood Counties in eastern Texas. The sampled areas are in the Texas region of the Gulf province (Trumbull, 1960). Figure 1 shows the counties from which the samples were collected. Brief descriptions of the 45 samples are given in table 1. Thirty-one samples (twenty-six lignite and five lignite-associated rock) were collected from four active strip mines in Freestone, Harrison, Milam, and Titus Counties by the Texas Bureau of Economic Geology; 14 samples (13 lignite and 1 carbonaceous shale) were collected from nine drill holes in connection with the U.S. Bureau of Mines evaluation of coal resources in the proposed Carl L. Estes Lake site, Rains, Van Zandt, and Wood Counties (Ward, 1977).
All samples included in this report are from the Wilcox Group of Eocene age. The Wilcox Group is undifferentiated in Harrison, Rains, Titus, Van Zandt, and Wood Counties. Lignite in this area is in the upper two-thirds of the Wilcox. In Freestone and Milam Counties, the Wilcox Group is subdivided into the Hooper, Simsboro, and Calvert Bluff Formations. Lignite in this area is predominantly in the Calvert Bluff Formation, with minor amounts in the Hooper Formation. A generalized stratigraphic column of the Wilcox Group and associated Tertiary strata is given in figure 2.
The Calvert Bluff Formation and undifferentiated Wilcox Group consist of clastic debris deposited in a fluvial environment, in which major channel complexes characterized by sand deposition divide interchannel areas composed of mud. Lignite was deposited as a blanket peat in freshwater swamps and marshes within interchannel areas. Individual lignite beds are lenticular bodies extending 3 to 20 km laterally; thicknesses are generally 1 to 3 m, rarely as much as 6 m. Descriptions of geology and lignite occurrences are in Fisher (1963), Kaiser (1974, 1978), and Kaiser and others (1978).

The excavation was undertaken by Lawrence Livermore Laboratory as part of a larger review of the earthquake hazards of the laboratory site. The Las Positas fault zone extends along the south side of Livermore Valley, passing just south of Lawrence Livermore Laboratory. The exposure revealed new evidence concerning not only the width of faulting in the Las Positas fault zone, but also its recency, style, and origin.

Phase I (the oldest) includes the Baish, Bahah, and Jiddah groups, which consist of an immature assemblage dominated by fine-grained metagraywacke, graphitic schist, chert, marble, and subordinate polymictic conglomerate and metasiltstone. Clastic rocks of Phase I are composed solely of volcanic material and do not contain plutonic or sialic detritus. Metasandstone, polymictic conglomerate, coarse-grained metagraywacke, and abundant marble (stromatolitic in places) constitute Phase II, the Ablah, Halaban, and Murdama groups. Plutonic and volcanic components are abundant in the clastic suite; K-feldspar detrital fragments are common in the Halaban and Murdama. The Shammar and Jubaylah groups form Phase III. Sedimentary rocks of this phase are fine- to coarse-grained terrigenous clastic rocks, boulder conglomerate, and stromatolitic limestone and dolomite. All phases include abundant volcanic rocks.
Sedimentary basins, excluding those containing Phase III rocks, generally trend north, especially in the central and southern parts of the shield. In the central and northern parts of the shield, north-trending basins and structures are truncated abruptly by parallel northwest-trending sedimentary troughs (Jubaylah basins) formed by sinistral wrench-fault tectonics.
Textural and compositional characteristics of the Proterozoic sedimentary rocks together with spatial relations of the depositional basins document a progressive change from oceanic to shallow marine and continental sedimentation with time, and a shift in the basin axes from west to east. Sedimentary parameters during this lengthy timespan show general increases in compositional and textural maturity, carbonate content, grain size, the ratio of sedimentary rocks to volcanic rocks, and plutonic and K-feldspar-bearing detritus. The sedimentary style of each phase was a function of tectonic conditions during deposition.

Three of the holes were completed; the fourth remains to be completed; a fifth is planned. A total of 1,693 feet (515 m) of pilot-hole rotary drilling and 843 feet (257 m) of core drilling was done. Mechanical and geophysical logs of the first, third, and fourth pilot holes were made; only the upper part of the second hole, which was almost entirely cored, was logged. Most of the cored rock is from the coal-bearing Neslen Formation and almost all of it is carbonaceous to some degree. The model is a finite-difference numerical solution of the partial differential equations describing (1) single phase fluid flow in aquifer, (2) energy transport by convection and conduction, and (3) contaminant transport dissolved in the fluid by convection and dispersion. Both the energy and the contaminant transports include molecular diffusion and hydrodynamic dispersion.
The objective of the contract was to modify the original version of the model for more general applications. Some of the major features are as follows:
(1) Fluid density is permitted to be a function of fluid pressure, temperature and contaminant concentration, the viscosity can be described as a function of pressure and temperature.
(2) Aquifer heterogeneities in the hydrological properties can be described on a numerical grid block basis.
(3) Free water surface is permitted to exist in the aquifer for shallow ground water applications.
(4) Contaminant may absorb on rock surface or decay according to a first order reaction. The absorption is described by a linear adsorption isotherm function of rock type in the aquifer.
(5) The model is extremely flexible in providing a wide choice of boundary conditions. These include natural flow in the aquifer, aquifer influence functions around the perimeter of the grid in recognition that the gridded region does not have no-flow boundaries, heat losses into the overlying impermeable strata, and the wellbore heat and pressure drop calculations coupled to the aquifer flow equations.
(6) The model offers the option of selecting as iterative or direct solution technique, and selecting central or backward finite-difference approximations in both time and space.
(7) Virtually any aquifer can be modeled by proper grid block description in three dimensions. In addition, the model is fully transient. The major limitation of the model arises using second-order correct (central-difference) finite-difference approximation in space. To avoid numerical oscillations in the solution, the user must restrict grid block and time step sizes depending upon the magnitude of the dispersivity.
