The ANLW site at INEL lies in a shallow topographic depression bounded on the east and south by volcanic rift zones that are the locus of past shield-type basalt volcanism and by rhyolite domes erupted along the ring fracture of an inferred rhyolite caldera. The K-At age data indicate that the ANLW site has been flooded by basalt lava flows at irregular intervals from perhaps a few thousand years to as much as 300,000-400,000 years, with an average recurrence interval between flows of approximately 80,000-100,000 years. Most of the presently available studies are based on the assumption that the response of a soil deposit is mainly due to the upward propagation of horizontally polarized shear waves from the underlying bedrock. Equivalent-linear procedures, currently in common use in non-linear soil response analysis, provide a simple approach and have been favorably compared with the actual recorded motions in some particular cases. Strain compatibility in these equivalent-linear approaches is maintained by selecting values of shear moduli and damping ratios in accordance with the average soil strains, in an iterative manner. Truly non-linear constitutive models with complete strain compatibility have also been employed.  The equivalent-linear approaches often raise some doubt as to the reliability of their results concerning the system response in high frequency regions. In these frequency regions the equivalent-linear methods may underestimate the surface motion by as much as a factor of two or more. Although studies are complete in their methods of analysis, they inevitably provide applications pertaining only to a few specific soil systems, and do not lead to general conclusions about soil behavior.  This report attempts to provide a general picture of the soil response through the use of a single-degree-of-freedom non-linear-hysteretic model. Although the investigation is based on a specific type of nonlinearity and a set of dynamic soil properties, the method described does not limit itself to these assumptions and is equally applicable to other types of nonlinearity and soil parameters.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/ofr79592","collaboration":"In cooperation with the Institute of the Middle East Technical University, Ankara, Turkey","usgsCitation":"Erdik, M.O., 1979, A single-degree-of-freedom model for non-linear soil amplification: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 79-592, i, 35 p.; Tables; Figures, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr79592.","productDescription":"i, 35 p.; Tables; Figures","onlineOnly":"Y","costCenters":[{"id":237,"text":"Earthquake Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":379,"text":"Menlo Park Science Center","active":false,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":116760,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/ofr_79_592.gif"},{"id":110892,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/0592/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b17e4b07f02db6a644b","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Erdik, Mustafa Ozder","contributorId":41577,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Erdik","given":"Mustafa","email":"","middleInitial":"Ozder","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":158263,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

An additional objective was the collection of continuous streamflow and temperature data at selected sites for development of a thermal model for use as a guide in design and management of a small reservoir. The quantity of surface water during low-flow varies considerably throughout the basin. Streamflow during periods of drought is groundwater discharging through numerous springs and seeps. The average 3-day, 20-year low-flow of the six study sites range from 0.1 to 2.2 cubic feet per second. Seepage investigations in October 1976 show that as much as 4.4 cubic feet per second are lost from the Sulphur Fork Red River within a reach of 1.7 miles between river mile 30.8 and 29.1. Seepage investigations in July 1977 show that as much as 3.7 cubic feet per second are gained in the Sulphur Fork Red River within a reach of 0.8 miles between river mile 42.6 and 41.8. Measured discharges from the 12 major springs in the basin ranged from less than 1 to 1660 gallons per minute during low-flow. Water quality of streams varies in time and space. Specific conductance ranged from 200 to 1,800 micromhos per centimeter at 25O centigrade during the 1976 seepage investigation on the Sulphur Fork Red River. During the two-year study the specific conductance of water from the springs ranged from 230 to 675 micromhos per centimeter at 25O centigrade.","language":"ENGLISH","doi":"10.3133/wri7977","usgsCitation":"Robbins, C.H., 1979, Low-flow hydrology of the Sulphur Fork Red River basin, Robertson County, north-central Tennessee: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 79-77, 67 P., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri7977.","productDescription":"67 P.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":3759,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.water.usgs.gov/wri79-0077/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":123826,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/wri_79_77.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a7fe4b07f02db648787","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Robbins, Clarence H.","contributorId":44159,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Robbins","given":"Clarence","email":"","middleInitial":"H.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":230204,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Radium ranges from 0.3 to 420 picocuries per liter and has a median value of 8.8, and uranium ranges from 0.02 to 180 micrograms per liter and has a median value of 2.4. Radon concentrations, measured in 32 of the 37 wells, range from less than 100 picocuries per liter to as much as 27,000 and have a median value of 580. Relationships among the radioactive elements and 28 other geochemical parameters were studied by using correlation coefficients and R-mode factor analysis. Five factor groups were determined to represent major influences on water chemistry: (1) short-term solution reactions, (2) oxidation reactions, (3) hydrolysis reactions, (4) uranium distribution, and (5) long-term solution reactions. Uranium concentrations are most strongly influenced by oxidation reactions but also are affected by solution reactions and distribution of uranium in the rocks of the aquifer system. Radon and radium concentrations are mostly controlled by uranium distribution; radium also shows a moderate negative relationship with oxidation. \r\n\r\nTo explain the statistical and spatial relationships among the parameters, a model was developed involving the selective leaching of uranium-bearing phases and metal sulfides which occur in discontinuous zones in sandstone and shale. When reducing conditions prevail, uranium is immobile, but radium can be taken into solution. When faults and associated fractured rocks allow oxidizing conditions to dominate, uranium can be taken into solution; radium can also be taken into solution, or it may become immobilized by coprecipitation with iron and manganese oxides or with barite. Several areas within the study area are discussed in terms of the model.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr79974","usgsCitation":"Felmlee, J., and Cadigan, R.A., 1979, Radium and uranium concentrations and associated hydrogeochemistry in ground water in southwestern Pueblo County, Colorado: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 79-974, iv, 54 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr79974.","productDescription":"iv, 54 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":142734,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/0974/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":36378,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/0974/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a80e4b07f02db649aaa","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Felmlee, J. Paved roads have been offset by faults at hundreds of locations, butted pipelines have been distorted by fault movements, and fault-induced gradient changes in drainage lines have raised concern among flood control engineers. Over 150 faults, many of them moving at rates of 0.5 to 2 cm/yr, have been mapped in the Houston area; the number of faults probably far exceeds this figure.

This report includes a map of eight faults, in north-central and western Houston, at a scale useful for land-use planning. Seven of the faults, are known, to be active and have caused considerable damage to structures built on or near them. If the eighth fault is active, it may be of concern to new developments on the west side of Houston. A ninth feature shown on the map is regarded only as a possible fault, as an origin by faulting has not been firmly established.

Seismic and drill-hold data for some 40 faults, studied in detail by various investigators have verified connections between scarps at the land surface and growth faults in the shallow subsurface. Some scarps, then, are known to be the surface manifestations of faults that have geologically long histories of movement. The degree to which natural geologic processes contribute to current fault movement, however, is unclear, for some of man’s activities may play a role in faulting as well.

Evidence that current rates of fault movement far exceed average prehistoric rates and that most offset of the land surface in the Houston area has occurred only within the last 50 years indirectly suggest that fluid withdrawal may be accelerating or reinitiating movement on pre-existing faults. This conclusion, however, is based only on a coincidence in time between increased fault activity and increased rates of withdrawal of water, oil, and gas from subsurface sediments; no cause-and-effect relationship has been demonstrated. An alternative hypothesis is that natural fault movements are characterized by short—term episodicity and that Houston is experiencing the effects of a brief period of accelerated natural fault movement. Available data from monitored faults are insufficient to weigh the relative importance of natural vs. induced fault movements.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey ","doi":"10.3133/mf1136","usgsCitation":"Verbeek, E.R., Ratzlaff, K.W., and Clanton, U.S., 1979, Faults in parts of north-central and western Houston metropolitan area, Texas: U.S. Geological Survey Miscellaneous Field Studies Map 1136, HTML Document, https://doi.org/10.3133/mf1136.","productDescription":"HTML Document","costCenters":[{"id":583,"text":"Texas Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":187172,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":6030,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.water.usgs.gov/mf1136/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":105508,"rank":700,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_6522.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"},"description":"6522"}],"scale":"24000","country":"United States","state":"Texas","city":"Houston","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -95.61749999999999,29.666666666666668 ], [ -95.61749999999999,29.700833333333332 ], [ -95.41666666666667,29.700833333333332 ], [ -95.41666666666667,29.666666666666668 ], [ -95.61749999999999,29.666666666666668 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ae2e4b07f02db688d4d","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Verbeek, Earl R.","contributorId":64222,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Verbeek","given":"Earl","email":"","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":265008,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Ratzlaff, Karl W.","contributorId":99177,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Ratzlaff","given":"Karl","email":"","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":265009,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Clanton, Uel S.","contributorId":21821,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Clanton","given":"Uel","email":"","middleInitial":"S.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":265007,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

These include airborne surveys at various elevations and numerous sea surveys. The data have been digitised at approximately one kilometre intervals and the International Geomagnetic Reference Field (IGRF epoch 1965.0) removed. The resulting values have been upward continued to a common height of 1.83 km (6000 ft), transferred to a base map and contoured at 100 nT intervals. The map is published in colour by the United States Geological Survey - Saudi Arabian Project.

The map reveals three distinct zones: (1) large amplitude (approximately 800 nT), short wavelength (15 km peak to trough) anomalies over the axial trough which form lineations roughly parallel to the coastlines, (2) smaller amplitude (approximately 300 nT), longer wavelength (30 km) anomalies over the main trough and shelves which also form lineations parallel to the coastlines, and (3) very variable amplitude (100 to 400 nT), short wavelength (5 to 30 km) anomalies over the shield areas on both sides of the Red Sea. The large, linear anomalies terminate in the north at about 23 °N and in the south at about 15 N. The anomalies over the main trough and shelves converge south of approximately 15.5 N. Several NE trending magnetic features offset the linear, axial anomalies. Such features are confined to zones (1) and (2) and are thought to indicate leaky transform faults.

The interpretation of the magnetic data is presented in three parts: the northern Red Sea (north of 24°N), the central Red Sea (18°N to 24°N) and the southern Red S ea (south of 18 N). For each part, there is a discussion of the extent of oceanic crust, the seafloor spreading history, the possible location of transform faults and the relationship of the magnetic anomalies to the deep holes. In Chapter 7, the results are brought together and their significance for Red Sea floor spreading, transforms and plate geometry discussed. The problems of the brine deeps are briefly discussed in Chapter 8.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr80131","usgsCitation":"Hall, S.A., 1979, A total intensity magnetic anomaly map of the Red Sea and its interpretation: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 80-131, Report: xi, 260 p.; 1 Plate: 17.07 x 22.00 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr80131.","productDescription":"Report: xi, 260 p.; 1 Plate: 17.07 x 22.00 inches","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":37017,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1980/0131/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":37018,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1980/0131/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":140902,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1980/0131/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"Saudi Arabia","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              33.7939453125,\n              16.678293098288513\n            ],\n            [\n              57.7001953125,\n              16.678293098288513\n            ],\n            [\n              57.7001953125,\n              32.24997445586331\n            ],\n            [\n              33.7939453125,\n              32.24997445586331\n            ],\n            [\n              33.7939453125,\n              16.678293098288513\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b16e4b07f02db6a5600","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Hall, Stuart A.","contributorId":37325,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hall","given":"Stuart","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":159454,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The 18 samples are briefly described in table 1. Thirteen of these samples were collected from seven holes that were drilled in connection with the Henry Mountains EMRIA (Energy Mineral Rehabilitation Inventory and Analyses) study (U.S. Department of the Interior, 1978). The locations of the seven core holes and the four other sampling sites are shown on figure 2.

The Henry Mountains coal field is adjacent to the Henry Mountains of southeastern Utah. The basin is a long, narrow syncline about 110 km long and 24 km wide bounded on the west by the Waterpocket Fold and on the east by the Henry Mountains. The most comprehensive geologic report available on the area is by Hunt and others (1953). Their work included a considerable amount of information on the coal resources. Other work in the area concerning coal or stratigraphy of coal bearing units includes: Doelling (1972), Peterson and Ryder (1975), Doelling (1975), Law (1977; 1978; 1979 a,b), and U.S. Department of the Interior (1978).

In the Henry Mountains field, there are three coal bearing units in rocks of Late Cretaceous age. In ascending order they are the Dakota Sandstone, the Ferron Sandstone Member of the Mancos Shale, and the Emery Sandstone Member of the Mancos Shale. The coal beds of the Henry Mountains coal field originated as layers of peat that were deposited, for the most part, in coastal swamp environments. Individual coal beds are discontinuous and exhibit large variations in thickness and quality. The thickest and most continuous coal beds occur in the Emery Sandstone Member along or near the axis of the Henry Mountains syncline (Law, 1978).
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr791097","usgsCitation":"Hatch, J.R., Affolter, R.H., and Law, B.E., 1979, Chemical analyses of coal from the Emery and Ferron Sandstone members of the Mancos Shale, Henry Mountains Field, Wayne and Garfield counties, Utah: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 79-1097, 24 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr791097.","productDescription":"24 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":429468,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/1097/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":142920,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/1097/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Utah","county":"Garfield County, Wayne County","otherGeospatial":"Henry Mountains Field","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -111.566162109375,\n              37.22158045838649\n            ],\n            [\n              -109.7259521484375,\n              37.22158045838649\n            ],\n            [\n              -109.7259521484375,\n              38.496593518947584\n            ],\n            [\n              -111.566162109375,\n              38.496593518947584\n            ],\n            [\n              -111.566162109375,\n              37.22158045838649\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49e2e4b07f02db5e4ade","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Hatch, Joseph R. 0000-0001-9257-0278 jrhatch@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0001-9257-0278","contributorId":722,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hatch","given":"Joseph","email":"jrhatch@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[{"id":164,"text":"Central Energy Resources Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":159598,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Affolter, Ronald H. affolter@usgs.gov","contributorId":659,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Affolter","given":"Ronald","email":"affolter@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"H.","affiliations":[{"id":165,"text":"Central Energy Resources Team","active":false,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":159597,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Law, Ben E.","contributorId":85033,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Law","given":"Ben","email":"","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":159599,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}
