These sections were measured prior to 1960, before adoption of the metric system. Publication was delayed by other assignments of the authors and later by the untimely death of J. C. Wright. They are being released at this time because of the increased interest in the uranium potential of Jurassic rocks. The Summerville Formation and Entrada Sandstone are the only formations in the San Rafael Group that are present in these sections.

Withdrawal of 85,000 acre-feet per year as required by the Ak-Chin water-supply act--Public Law 95-328--will greatly deplete the amount of water in storage and may cause land subsidence in the areas. Study concurrent with well-field development will enable design changes to minimize pumping costs , water-level declines, movement of poor-quality water into the well fields, and potential land subsidence and associated earth fissures. Surface and bore-hole geophysical testing, aquifer tests, and the development of simulative mathematical models will accomplish these goals and permit quantitative evaluations of the potential deleterious effects resulting from development of the water supply. Ground-water contamination by DIMP from the disposal of wastes into unlined surface ponds at the Rocky Mountain Arsenal occurred from 1952 to 1956. A digital-transport model was used to determine the effects on ground-water movement and on DIMP concentrations in the ground water of a bentonite barrier in the aquifer near the northern boundary of the arsenal. The transport model is based on an iterative-alternating- direction-implicit mathematical solution of the ground-water-flow equation coupled with a method-of-characteristics solution of the solute-transport equation. The model assumes conservative (nonreactive) transient transport of DIMP and steady-state ground-water flow.
In the model simulations, a bentonite barrier was assumed that was impermeable and penetrated the entire saturated thickness of the aquifer. Ground water intercepted by the barrier was assumed to be pumped by wells located south (upgra-dient) of the barrier, to be treated to remove DIMP, and to be recharged by pits or wells to the aquifer north (downgradient) of the barrier. The amount of DIMP transported across the northern boundary of the arsenal was substantially reduced by a ground-water-barrier system of this type. For a 1,500-foot-long bentonite barrier located along the northern boundary of the arsenal near D Street, about 50 percent of the DIMP that would otherwise cross the boundary would be intercepted by the barrier. This barrier configuration and location were proposed by the U.S. Army. Of the ground water with DIMP concentrations greater than 500 micro- grams per liter, the safe DIMP-concentration level determined by the U.S. Army, about 72 percent would be intercepted by the barrier system. The amount of DIMP underflow intercepted may be increased to 65 percent by doubling the pumpage, or to 73 percent by doubling the length of the barrier.

Metal analyses included arsenic, cadmium, chromium, copper, lead, zinc, selenium, and mercury. Physical data collected included water temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, discharge, and size of cobbles and fine stream-bottom material. Additional chemical analyses included major constituents. Benthic invertebrate identifications were generally taken to the generic level, with a total of 49 taxons identified and quantified. A total of 36 periphyton taxons were quantified and identified, generally at the species level.

Palynomorph microscope slides processed from well cuttings, sidewall cores, and conventional cores of 29 test wells may be borrowed one well at a time for a period of three weeks from the U. S. Geological Survey. Both palynomorph and Foraminifera slides may also be examined on-site at the laboratory of the subcontractor Anderson, Warren, and Associates Micropaleontology Consultants of San Diego, California. Slides from newly drilled test wells will be announced in upcoming open-file reports.

The faults occur between large intrusive pegmatites and garnetiferous gneisses of Precambrian age, and were reactivated as the result of the early Paleocene uplift of the Front Range foothills. Mineralization in the deposit includes both wallrock alteration and vein filling. Alteration was intense but local, and chiefly involved the carbonatization of mafic minerals in the wallrocks. Felsic minerals in the wallrocks are relatively unaltered. The veins are filled with an adularia-pitchblende-carbonate assemblage with minor related sulfides and coffinite. Many of the iron-bearing carbonates in both the alteration and vein assemblages have been altered to hematite. \r\n\r\nThe mineralization and alteration are believed to have formed in response to initially high amounts of CO2 and the subsequent release of dissolved CO2 by boiling or effervescence. Uranium, carried in a dicarbonate complex, was precipitated directly as pitchblende when the CO2 was released. The expulsion of H+ during boiling created a net oxidizing environment which oxidized the iron-bearing carbonates. The complex consists of an aegirine-phlogopite pyroxenite that has been intruded and partly replaced by nepheline syenite. The contact zone between the two igneous units varies from a sharp contact to a diffuse zone where the pyroxenite has been metasomatically replaced by the syenite. The entire complex was intruded into an older Cretaceous monzonite. \r\n\r\nThe pyrochlore occurs as an accessory mineral in the syenite, and is visible in rocks containing over 50 ppm uranium. Chemical analyses indicate that, in all samples of syenite, there is a positive correlation between uranium and niobium; this suggests that the uranium-pyrochlore association persists even when pyrochlore is not readily visible in thin section. The aggregate thickness of salt-bearing rocks, from the base of the lowest salt to the top of the highest salt, ranges from about 300 feet in the northern part of the area to more than 450 feet in the southern part. The aggregate thickness of salt, exclusive of the intervening rocks, also increases southward, from about 100 feet to more than 200 feet.
