It is frequently used to measure the flow of water in laboratories and in small, natural streams. The purpose of this report is to present a comprehensive analysis of the discharge characteristics of triangular-notch weirs. Previously-published data are analyzed in the light of the effective-head concept, and a new discharge formula is proposed. Coefficients are recommended, and requirements for precise measurements are described. Limits of applicability are discussed. Freshwater in Pleistocene sand and gravel deposits is the source of supply for nearly 100 municipal and thousands of private domestic wells. Most ground water on Cape Cod is of good chemical quality for drinking and other uses. It is characteristically low in dissolved solids and is soft. In 90 percent of the samples analyzed, dissolved solids were less than 100 mg/l (milligrams per liter) and pH was less than 7.0. Highway deicing salt, sea-water flooding due to storms , and saltwater intrusion due to ground-water withdrawal are sources of sodium chloride contamination. Chloride concentrations have increased from 20 to 140 mg/l, owing to saltwater intrusion at Provincetown 's wells in Truro. In Yarmouth, contaminated ground water near a salt-storage area contained as much as 1,800 mg/l chloride. Heavy metals, insecticides, and herbicides were not found at concentrations above the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency 's recommended limits for public drinking-water supplies, but iron and manganese in some samples exceeded those limits. Ninety percent of 84 samples analyzed for nitrate reported as nitrogen contained less than 1.3 mg/l and 80 percent contained 0.5 mg/l or less of nitrate as nitrogen. Water containing nitrogen in excess of 0.5 mg/l has probably been affected by municipal or domestic sewage or fertilizer, and water with less than this amount may have been affected by them. The gossans, derived from sulfides, are ordinarily found at contacts between marble lenses and metavolcanic-metasedimentary rocks, but in the southern part of the mined area, gossans are also within marbles. The gossans are generally lensoidal and discontinuous along strike. The same type of metallization, in similar rocks, was found at the Hemair ancient workings, about 3 km southeast. Both deposits are thought to be of epigenetic origin, and ore deposition was controlled by shearing along marble contacts. Drilling is recommended at Farah Garan. \r\n\r\nAl Ashyab is 4 km south of Farah Garan, and similar rocks and structures extend through both areas but there are no ancient workings at Al Ashyab. The dominant geologic feature in the area is a high, narrow, light-colored ridge consisting of intensely silicified quartz porphyry. Pyritized metavolcanic rocks envelope the silicified rock, and geochemical sampling revealed weakly anomalous, erratically spaced concentrations of copper and zinc within these rocks. No further work is recommended for the area.\r\n\r\nQuartz-filled fractures containing gold were mapped at Al Asharfat, Lejourah, and other locations where ancient miners worked the veins. The gold-bearing quartz veins are narrow and have short strike lengths, and potential tonnages are thought to be small. The veins are in younger, more massive rocks than the enclosing metamorphic rocks and are thought to be younger than the adjacent sulfide deposits. No further work is recommended. \r\n\r\nPyritized zones and associated sparse copper oxides extend intermittently about 6 km south of Hemair in metasedimentary rocks of the Jiddah group. Similar zones, associated quartz vein swarms, and minor magnetite and gold are found in mafic metavolcanic rocks adjacent to the contact with quartz porphyry about 1 km west of Al Asharfat. Further study of these areas is recommended.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr791659","usgsCitation":"Smith, C.W., and Blank, H.R., 1979, Ancient mines of the Farah Garan area, southwestern Saudi Arabia: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 79-1659, v, 56 p., [5] fold. leaves of plates :maps (2 fold. in pocket) ;28 cm.; (63 p., 7 over-size sheets - PGS), https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr791659.","productDescription":"v, 56 p., [5] fold. leaves of plates :maps (2 fold. in pocket) ;28 cm.; (63 p., 7 over-size sheets - PGS)","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":144476,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/1659/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":38966,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/1659/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":38967,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/1659/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":38968,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/1659/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ac8e4b07f02db67c295","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Smith, C. Thirty-nine sites in 1977 and forty-one sites in 1978 were sampled to determine snow depth, density, structure, and snow-soil interface temperature. In addition, snow surface wind indicators were examined over most of NPRA. In April and early May of two consecutive years, the snow cover in NPRA was thin, wind-packed, and virtually continuous. The depth and water equivalent of the snow generally increased with altitude and with distance from the coastal plain. Snow depth on tundra ranged from less than 0.20 m (meters) near the coast to more than 0.90 m in parts of the Brooks Range. Snow density was relatively high in areas where wind slab was developed throughout the snowpack, and lower where there was less wind slab. In 1977, the coastal plain showed the greatest wind slab development and higher densities, averaging 310 kg/cu m (kilograms per cubic meter) on tundra, while the mountains and foothills had less wind slab and lower densities, averaging 270 kg/cu m. In 1978, with more local variation, snow density on the coastal plain averaged 330 kg/cu m on tundra and averaged 310 kg/cu m in the mountains and foothills. Water equivalent of the snowpack in 1977 ranged from less than 0.10 m in the coastal areas to more than 0.25 m in the Brooks Range, and averaged nearly 0.12 m on tundra for the entire area. Water equivalent of the snowpack averaged more than 0.13 m in 1978. Snow-soil interface temperatures in 1977 ranged from about -20C on the coastal plain, where the snowpack was thin and ambient air temperatures were low, to about -5C in the mountains and foothills where the snowpack was thicker and ambient air temperatures higher. Records of 1924 stock, domestic, irrigation, public supply and test wells are tabulated in the report. The data include well location, depth of well, casing diameter, type of lift, type of power, use of water, principal aquifer, altitude of land surface , water level, discharge, field specific conductance, and water temperature. Locations of the inventoried wells are shown on a map at a scale of 1:500,000. Lighologic logs of 373 wells and test holes are also included. The aquifer system crops out in a band 5 to 10 miles wide, that trends southeast across the State from the Warren-Yazoo County line to northeastern Wayne County. In the northwest part of the area, the formations dip to the southwest at 12 feet per mile. At the southeastern end of the outcrop, the dip is 42 feet per mile. The average dip for the entire area is 30 feet per mile. The aquifers are of primary importance for domestic and farm use. Total withdrawal in 1977 was about 1.4 million gallons per day. Since 1963 water levels have declined an average of between 0.05 and 2 feet per year. Water quality is generally good although in some places there are objectionably high concentrations of iron and color. Mapping on seven Landsat images in an area of about 100,000 km2 reveals that lineaments are best developed along azimuths of N. 60° E. to N. 90° E. and N. 30° W. to N. 60° W. Although their exact structural nature and origin are not known, these features are visualized as major zones of weakness that subdivide the crystalline Precambrian basement into discrete blocks. Several of the most prominent surface lineaments can be related to basement faults. The blocks bounded by these lineaments constitute low-relief uplifts that define the southern margin of the Williston Basin.

During deposition of the Upper Cretaceous Pierre Shale, lineaments were the sites of tectonic activity. Members of the Pierre are relatively continuous throughout the area and are well dated by biostratigraphic zonation. The base of the Mobridge Member is the highest structural datum available for regional mapping. Northeast-trending surface lineaments near the White and Cheyenne Rivers have a clear expression on a subsurface structural map of this horizon. The Ardmore Bentonite Bed lies approximately 300 m (980 ft) below the Mobridge; subsurface structure contours on this datum show the active lineaments trending northwest. Isopach maps of two rock-stratigraphic units between the Ardmore and Mobridge reflect the shift in tectonic activity from early northwest sets of lineaments to later northeast trends.

","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr791374","usgsCitation":"Shurr, G.W., 1979, Upper Cretaceous tectonic activity on lineaments in western South Dakota: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 79-1374, 24 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr791374.","productDescription":"24 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":425664,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/1374/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":142468,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/1374/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"South Dakota","otherGeospatial":"western South Dakota","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -104.20182321394218,\n              46.083750905164635\n            ],\n            [\n              -104.20182321394218,\n              42.99574707263821\n            ],\n            [\n              -100.13052274433691,\n              42.99574707263821\n            ],\n            [\n              -100.13052274433691,\n              46.083750905164635\n            ],\n            [\n              -104.20182321394218,\n              46.083750905164635\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a24e4b07f02db60e4b6","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Shurr, George W.","contributorId":78741,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Shurr","given":"George","email":"","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":162611,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

This study will investigate the potential effects of large-scale surface mining of peat on the hydrology and water quality of Upper Red Lake and the Tamarac River. The major aspects of the study are the characterization of the surface-water and groundwater hydrology and water quality, including the trace-metal content of the peat. Data will be collected to construct two- and three-dimensional digital models to simulate the movement of ground water and its relation to surface water in the peatlands, streams, and lakes. The research will concentrate on three areas: (1) Developing methods to analyze flood peaks in foothill areas by using gaging-station records to obtan annual arrays of snowmelt and rainfall peaks; (2) investigating techniques for flood informatin transfer, using physical and climatic characteristics; and (3) testing and, if required, verifying hydrologic models. The available gaging-station data consists of records from 81 active and 43 discontinued gaging stations. The National Weather Service operates 53 recording and 70 non-recording precipitation gages, and has 476 storm observers within the project boundaries. The Soil Conservation Service is installing a network (SNOTEL) of 46 automated snowpack monitors. A data-collection network will be established in areas of data deficiencies, consisting of streamflow stations , crest-stage gages, and precipitation stations. Nitrogenous and carbonaceous oxygen consumption were separated by using an inhibitor of nitrification 1-allyl-2-thiourea. The comparison was conducted in the laboratory using samples collected from the water column. Nitrification accounted for 38 to 52 percent of the total oxygen consumption. Nitrifying bacteria were enumerated from the same reach of the river. The population of Nitrosomonas ranged from 10 to 1,000 per milliliter in the water column and 100 to 100,000 per gram of benthic sediment. The nitrobacter population ranged from 10 to 100 per milliliter in the water column and 100 to 1,000 per gram in the benthic sediment. The concentration of ammonium, nitrite, and nitrate as N was determined from water samples collected throughout the study reach. The average rate of ammonium disappearance and of nitrate appearance was 0.02 milligram per liter per hour of flow time. Such reported values are estimated to average 10 to 15 percent higher than the actual discharge rate. Values obtained from discharge-totaling meters are reasonably accurate, but few wells are equipped with these meters, and the cost of equipping all wells with meters may be prohibitive. Measured rates of power consumption can give good estimates of total withdrawal from wells where the power consumption is measured. However, power-consumption values cannot be extrapolated reliably from one well to another.

Three techniques are regarded as promising for estimating areal ground-water withdrawals from readily collected data:

Examination of a small sample of withdrawal values from metered wells indicates that the statistical approach used by Luckey (1972) may be applied to western Kansas to estimate total withdrawal with acceptable accuracy in a large area from a statistical sample of measured values.

Measured values of irrigation application at a small number of selected wells might be used to compute total withdrawal for irrigation by crop type and precipitation zone. Evaluation of reported values of irrigation-water application for selected crops in zones of generally similar precipitation showed that, although the reported values are judged to be erroneously high, the reported values were consistent with each other and with average precipitation.

Power-consumption coefficients may be used to calculate an average coefficient for an area. The method described by Luckey (1972) was used to calculate the number of power-consumption coefficients that would have to be determined to estimate the mean power consumption of wells pumped by electric or natural-gas engines. The results indicate that as few as 100 values would produce results accurate to within 10 percent of the true average at the 95-percent confidence level. Thus, power coefficients for a particular type of irrigation system in any given area can be used even though values of power coefficients have little transfer value from well to well.

Efforts by the Instrument Development Laboratofy of the U.S. Geological Survey to design improved instruments for measuring ground-water withdrawals have produced two promising results:

An electronic running-time meter (Running-time Sentry) that was tested during 1978 in western Kansas and Florida appears to give accurate values of total pumping time. Large-scale testing of this prototype running-time meter is planned for 1979.

A low-cost discharge-totaling meter (REELTOT), based on the concept of sensing the velocity head in a pipe with differential-pressure transducers permanently installed in the pipe, is nearly complete. Early prototypes of this instrument may be tested in western Kansas during 1979.

For the remainder of this study, the three techniques for estimating areal ground-water withdrawals described above will be tested on a larger scale in Groundwater Management District No. 1, an area of about 1,800 square miles in west-central Kansas. About 150 randomly selected wells will be equipped with Running-time Sentry units and monitored for total withdrawal, instantaneous discharge, and power consumption. A few wells will be equipped with prototype discharge-totaling meters. The performance of the Sentry units and discharge-totaling meters will be evaluated. Areal estimates of withdrawal from measured withdrawal values, from average power-consumption coefficients, and from irrigation application by crop will be calculated and compared with each other and with reported values of withdrawal.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri7992","usgsCitation":"Baker, C.H., 1979, Evaluation of methods for estimating
