The surficial deposits range in thickness from less than 25 feet in the western part of the district to greater than 250 feet in the eastern part. The surficial deposits include sand, clayey sand, shell, and shelly marl that occur in the Holocene sand, Pleistocene marine terrace sand, and unconsolidated parts of the Fort Thompson Formation, Caloosahatchee Marl, Alachua Formation, and Bone Valley Formation. Lithologic logs and information from quarries were used in conjunction with an unpublished map prepared during an earlier investigation to compile this map at 1:250,000 scale. Local, State, and Federal officials need data and information to evaluate, coordinate, and manage programs concerned with floods and flood losses. Because of a need to document stream discharges, elevations, and sediment concentrations, current-meter and indirect measurements were made at 34 gaging stations during or immediately after the floods. This report summarizes some of the hydrologic data collected. Peak discharges of record occurred at 20 gaging stations. Frequency of peak discharge equaled or exceeded the 100-year recurrence interval at 11 stations. The Federal Benchmark gaging station on the North Fork Whitewater River was destroyed. Five people died as a result of the floods, and property damages were estimated to exceed $114 million. The investigations spanned several years when precipitation was below normal in most of southern California.</p>\n<p>Surface-water records were collected for a 6-year period at 21 sites, and continuous precipitation records were obtained at four sites. Ground-water levels were tabulated from historical data at selected wells for 1941, 1968, and 1970. Water quality was monitored at several wells in the valley, and sediment data were collected at three surface-water gages. These findings are based on a water-quality reconnaissance of 129 treated public supplies throughout the State during the period November 1977 through February 1978. While primary drinking water regulation exceedences were infrequent, lead, selenium, and gross alpha radioactivity in a very few water supplies were above established maximum contaminant levels. Additionally, the secondary drinking water regulation parameters--dissolved solids , chloride, sulfate, iron, color, and pH--were occasionally detected in excess of the proposed Federal regulations. The secondary regulations, however, pertain mainly to the aesthetic quality of drinking water and not directly to public health aspects. The location of the headwater of each is given with reference to cultural and topographic features. ' Headwater ' in this report is defined as the first site downstream from which the average streamflow is 5 cubic feet per second. The site locations were determined from drainage areas as indicated on topographic maps. The size of the drainage area required to produce an average flow of 5 cubic feet per second was determined from equations, developed separately for each State by regression techniques, that define the relation between streamflow and hydrologic factors of the region. Drainage area and precipitation were factors in the equations for all three States: forest cover was found to be significant in Ohio. The objectives of this program are (1) to provide long-term records of water-level fluctuations in representative wells, (2) to facilitate the prediction of water-level trends and indicate future availability of ground-water supplies, and (3) to provide information for use in basic research.</p><p>Water-level data in table 1 are from wells that are measured annually, prior to the irrigation season, to achieve the most natural representation of the static water level. Water-level measurements listed in the column under 1976 may have been made during December 1975 or January, February, March, April, or May, 1976. Measurements listed in the column 1977 may have been made during December 1976 or January, February, March, or April 1977. Figure 1 shows the counties and number of wells therein, where data were obtained for this report.</p><p>Records of water levels in Oklahoma are collected through a cooperative program by the U.S. Geological Survey and the Oklahoma Water Resources Board. The records are tabulated and published by the U.S. Geological Survey on an annual basis.</p><p>The stratigraphic nomenclature and age determinations used in this report are those accepted by the Oklahoma Geological Survey and do not necessarily agree with those of the U.S. Geological Survey except for the Cheyenne Sandstone which is considered to be Purgatoire Sandstone by the Oklahoma Geological Survey (Robert 0. Principal drainages are Citico Creek and Doublecamp Creek. Rocks of the study area include greenschist-facies arkosic metasandstone, metagraywacke, slate, and metaconglomerate of the Great Smoky Group of late Precambrian age. Minor deposits of unconsolidated Quaternary alluvium locally mantle the bedrock. Deformation is shown by asymmetric and overturned folds and by several major faults.</p><p>More than 500 sample s of soil, rock, and stream sediment were collected and analyzed for 31 major, minor, and trace elements by semiquantitative spectrographic, atomic absorption, and fire assay methods No significant metal anomalies were detected. Concentrations of Cu, Co, As, Pb, and Zn slightly higher than background are found within sulfidic parts of a distinctive stratigraphic unit composed of graphitic slate and metagraywacke. Pyrite and pyrrhotite are the chief sulfide minerals, with traces o f accessory sphalerite, chalcopyrite, galena, and arsenopyrite occurring as microscopic intergrowths. A reconnaissance ground radiometric survey and subsequent neutron activation analyses of selected radioactive rock samples show that the sulfidic parts of the graphitic slate unit have a relatively high content of Th and U, but are not potentially economic.</p><p>No metallic mineral resources appear to exist within the Citico Creek Wilderness Study Area. Resources of slate, silica, and stone are present, but they display no special qualities to differentiate them from other such material throughout the region. Ceramic evaluation tests on selected samples of slate indicate that the slate would have only marginal use for structural clay products such as brick and tile. Minor sand and gravel deposits occur along a few streams but are present in larger quantities and are more easily recovered in other areas.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological The gaged watersheds have impervious areas that range from 19 percent for a residential watershed in north Tampa to nearly 100 percent for a downtown Tampa watershed. Land-use types, including roads, residential, commercial, industrial, institutional, recreational , and open space, have been determined for each watershed. Rainfall and storm runoff data collected since 1971 for one site and since 1975 for six other sites through September 1976, have been processed. These data are recorded at 5-minute intervals and are stored in the U. S. Geological Survey WATSTORE unit values file. Daily rainfall at 12 sites and daily pan evaporation at one site have been stored in the WATSTORE daily values file. Chemical and biological analyses of storm runoff for six sites, base flow for seven sites, and analyses of bottom material for seven sites are also stored in the WATSTORE water-quality files. Rainfall and storm runoff for selected storms, daily rainfall, and daily pan-evaporation data are summarized in this report. Water-quality analyses of all water-quality samples also are listed.
