The Apollo 12 </span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW67636020 BCX8\">landing site is in the west-central part of the region and has been mapped in detail by Cannon (1969)</span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW67636020 BCX8\">. Although the entire region is covered by cratered and rayed mare materials, the mare is almost </span><span class=\"AdvancedProofingIssue SCXW67636020 BCX8\">entirely surrounded</span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW67636020 BCX8\"> by the terrae and is probably relatively thin</span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW67636020 BCX8\">. East-northeast of the </span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW172213933 BCX8\">quadrangle</span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW172213933 BCX8\"> lies Mare </span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW172213933 BCX8\">Nectaris</span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW172213933 BCX8\">, approximately 350 km in diameter</span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW172213933 BCX8\">,</span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW172213933 BCX8\">a</span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW172213933 BCX8\">nd near the northeast corner is the crater Theophilus</span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW172213933 BCX8\">. </span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW172213933 BCX8\">Rupes</span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW172213933 BCX8\"> Altai (the Altai scarp</span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW172213933 BCX8\">) divides the quadrangle into two markedly different morphologic provinces. To the west, comple</span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW172213933 BCX8\">xly overlapping, fractured craters are extensively buried by distinctive </span><span class=\"SpellingError SCXW172213933 BCX8\">noncrater</span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW172213933 BCX8\"> units.</span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW172213933 BCX8\"> The area east of the scarp, here referred as the bench and trough province, is part of the multi-ringed structure (</span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW172213933 BCX8\">Nect</span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW172213933 BCX8\">aris</span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW172213933 BCX8\"> basin</span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW172213933 BCX8\">)</span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW172213933 BCX8\">whose deep central part is occupied by Mare </span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW172213933 BCX8\">Nectaris</span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW172213933 BCX8\"> (Hartmann and Kuiper, 1962) and whose western limit is the scarp. This province is characterized by fewer craters and by ben</span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW172213933 BCX8\">ches and troughs which are only shallowly filled. Mare material of Mare </span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW172213933 BCX8\">Nectaris</span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW172213933 BCX8\"> in contact with the bench and trough material</span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW172213933 BCX8\">s</span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW172213933 BCX8\"> is locally ex</span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW172213933 BCX8\">posed in the northeast corner of the quadrangle and more extensively just beyond the east border of the quadrangle. In general morphology</span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW172213933 BCX8\">, </span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW172213933 BCX8\">the </span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW172213933 BCX8\">Nectaris</span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW172213933 BCX8\"> basin is </span><span class=\"AdvancedProofingIssue SCXW172213933 BCX8\">similar to</span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW172213933 BCX8\"> the Orientale basin (</span><span class=\"SpellingError SCXW172213933 BCX8\">McCauly</span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW172213933 BCX8\">, 1968), but the </span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW172213933 BCX8\">Nectaris</span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW172213933 BCX8\"> ring structures </span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW172213933 BCX8\">and other features are more subdued.
