The results of the study indicated that the chemical and physical properties and range of concentrations of several dissolved constituents in both estuaries varied during a tide cycle primarily as the result of the interaction of freshwater and wastewater inflow with the saline Gulf waters.</p><p>The water quality condition of both estuaries generally was good and the low 5-day biochemical oxygen demand in the estuaries indicated that excessive oxygen demand was not exerted during the study. The 5-day biochemical oxygen demand generally was less than 3.5 milligrams per liter. Dissolved-oxygen concentrations decreased with depths and the lowest concentrations occurred below 30-foot depths in Bayou Casotte. Oxygen levels at shallow depths generally were less in Bayou Chico than in Bayou Casotte. Dissolved-oxygen concentrations in Bayou Casotte ranged from 0.7 to 7.7 milligrams per liter at high tide and from 2.5 to 8.2 milligrams per liter at low tide. In general, phosphorus and nitrogen species were present in comparatively high concentrations in both estuaries; were higher at low tide that at high tide; and were highest in Bayou Casotte upstream of Bayou Casotte harbor. Concentrations of the nitrogen species during a tide cycle generally were lower at the mouth of Bayou Casotte than at the mouth of Bayou Chico. No evidence for the accumulation of anthropogenic trace metals was found at the 51 locations sampled in this study. Trace metal concentrations generally correlate with the concentration of fine-grained sediment. No seasonal variability in trace metals was observed. A digital model calibrated to conditions in Clear Creek was used to develop alternatives for future waste loadings that would be compatible with Indiana stream water-quality standards defined for two critical hydrologic conditions, summer and winter low flows.</p><p>The Winston Thomas wastewater-treatment facility is the only point-source waste load affecting the modeled segment of Clear Creek. A new wastewater-treatment facility under construction at Dillman Road (river mile 23.78) will replace the Winston Thomas wastewater-treatment facility (river mile 16.96) in 1980.</p><p>Natural streamflow during the summer and annual 7-day, 10-year low flows are zero, so no benefit from dilution is provided.</p><p>The model indicates that ammonia-nitrogen toxicity is the most significant factor affecting the stream water quality during summer and winter low flows. The ammonia-nitrogen concentration of the wastewater effluent exceeds the maximum total ammonia-nitrogen concentrations of 2.5 milligrams per liter for summer months (June through August) and 4.0 milligrams per liter for winter months (November through March) required for Indiana streams.</p><p>Nitrification, benthic-oxygen demand, and algal respiration were the most significant factors affecting the dissolved-oxygen concentration in Clear Creek during the model calibration. The water surface elevation reached 17.46 feet (5.32 m) above national geodetic vertical datum of 1929 (NGVD), approximately 10.5 feet (3.2 m) above the predicted astronomical tide at Bangor. The unusually high water resulted from a tidal storm surge caused by prolonged strong, south-southeasterly winds which occurred near the time of astronomical high tide. Winds exceeded 64 knots off the New England coast. The resulting flood was the third highest since 1846 and is the first documented tidal flood at Bangor. This report documents the meteorological and hydrologic conditions associated with the flooding and also contains a brief description of storm damage from Eastport to Brunswick, Maine. The lake acted as a settling basin for detrital material being transported by the river. This detritus consisted of clays, quartz, feldspars, and micas which became mudstones and siltstones. These mudstones and siltstones, much eroded and dissected after the draining of the lake, extend over the entire basin and are interbedded with tuffs formed by the intermittent deposition of volcanic ashfalls in the former lake waters. These lightcolored mudstones and siltstones are tough and well indurated and break with a conchoidal fracture. \r\n\r\nThe predominant clay mineral in these detrital beds is a lithiumbearing saponite, which is found not only in the lake beds but also in the area beyond the boundaries of the lake, especially in fluvial deposits in the drainage basin of the Amargosa River to the north. This saponite does not contain enough lithium to be classified as a hectorite, and we have observed no indications that this clay consists of a mixture of two phases, such as hectorite and a diluent. Some authigenic dioctahedral montmorillonite, found only in small quantities close to the tuffs, was formed by alteration of the volcanic glass of the tuffs and was then admixed with the overlying or underlying detrital clays. \r\n\r\nThe only authigenic clay-type mineral found in any significant quantity is sepiolite, found near the edges of the lake basin and stratigraphically located mainly within a meter of the two uppermost tuffs. This sepiolite probably was precipitated when silica became available to the magnesium-bearing lake water through dissolution of the volcanic ash. Precipitation of sepiolite probably did not occur within the tuffs owing to the presence of alumina in solution. Zeolites were produced there and sepiolite formed outside the margins of the tuffs. \r\n\r\nAlso formed by the high-pH lake waters were water-soluble minerals, which were found widely dispersed in crusts or streaks on the clays. Much of the calcite was likely precipitated from the lake waters, especially near the north end of the lake where calciumbearing fresh water came into contact with the C02-rich lake waters. \r\n\r\nMagadiite, a sodium silicate mineral reported only twice previously in the United States, was found in small quantities in the southern end of the basin. This mineral is indicative of a minimum pH of 8.5. \r\n\r\nThe authigenic minerals formed in the lake reflect the presence of silica-rich tuffs and the high-pH, alkaline character of the lake waters.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Govt. The mission of the Geological Survey is to identify the Nation 's land, water, energy, and mineral resources; to classify federally-owned mineral lands and water-power sites; to resolve the exploration and development of energy and natural resources on Federal and Indian lands; and to explore and appraise the petroleum potential of the National Petroleum Reserve in Alaska. Alaska is at once the largest, the least populated, the least explored, and the least developed State in the Nation. More than half of the Nation 's 600 million acres of Outer Continental Shelf lies off Alaska 's coast, and nearly half of the remaining 762 million acres of Federal land are within its borders. Its resources of all kinds present an opportunity to demonstrate how the needs of both conservation and development can be met for the benefit of the American All references to most reports of the Geological Survey, the U.S. Bureau of Mines, and the State of Alaska Division of Geological and Geophysical Surveys and its predecessor State and Territorial agencies released before September 1, 1979, are summarized. Certain, mainly statistical, reports such as the annual Mineral Yearbook of the U.S. Bureau of Mines and the biennial and annual reports of the State of Alaska Division of Geological and Geophysical Surveys and its predecessor State and Territorial agencies are not included. Also not included are data on many claims about which little more than their locations is known (for example, MacKevett and Holloway, 1977 (OF 77-169A), p. 55).
