The Tulare Formation of Pliocene and Pleistocene age, terrace deposits of Pleistocene age, and alluvium and flood-basin deposits of Pleistocene and Holocene age constitute the fresh ground-water reservoir Pre-Tertiary and Tertiary sedimentary and crystalline rocks, undifferentiated, underlie the valley and yield saline water. </p><p>Hydrologically most important, the Tulare Formation is divided into a lower water-bearing zone confined by the Corcoran Clay Member and an upper zone that is confined, semiconfined, and unconfined in different parts of the area. Alluvium and flood-basin deposits are included in the upper zone. Surficial alluvium and flood-basin deposits contain a shallow water-bearing zone. Lower zone wells were flowing in 1908, but subsequent irrigation development caused head declines and land subsidence. Overdraft in both zones ended in 1951 with import of surface water. </p><p>Bicarbonate water flows into the area from the Sierra Nevada and Diablo Range. Diablo Range water is higher in sulfate, chloride, and dissolved solids. Upper zone water averages between 400 and 1,200 mg/l (milligrams per liter) dissolved solids and water hardness generally exceeds 180 mg/l as calcium carbonate. Nitrate, fluoride, iron, and boron occur in excessive concentrations in water from some wells. It has been in a eutrophic state for at least 350 years, and the geochemically derived dissolved materials entering the lake from the drainage basin are of sufficient quantity (449,700 tones per year) to support annual algal blooms. The greatest amount of the dissolved materials (72 percent) comes from the southern tributaries to the lake, of which Chittenango Creek carries the largest load of almost all major chemical substances. The stream contributes 37 percent of all dissolved solids entering the lake. The Mojave Water Agency is responsible for providing sufficient water of good quality for the full economic development of the area. The U.S. Geological Survey suggested an electric analog model of the basin as a predictive tool to aid management. \r\n\r\nAbout 1,375 square miles of the alluvial basin was simulated by a passive resistor-capacitor network. The Mojave River, the main source of recharge, was simulated by subdividing the river into 13 reaches, depending on intermittent or perennial flow and on phreatophytes. The water loss to the aquifer was based on records at five gaging stations. The aquifer system depends on river recharge to maintain the water table as most of the ground-water pumping and development is adjacent to the river. \r\n\r\nThe accuracy and reliability of the model was assessed by comparing the water-level changes computed by the model for the period 1930-63 with the changes determined from field data for the same period.\r\n\r\nThe model was used to predict the effects on the physical system by determining basin-wide water-level changes from 1930-2000 under different pumping rates and extremes in flow of the Mojave River. Future pumping was based on the 1960-63 rate, on an increase of 20 percent from this rate, and on population projections to 2000 in the Barstow area. This interim report presents an analysis of the low-flow data that the program has obtained to 1970.</p><p>As part of this program, personnel of the Geological Survey made two series of base-flow measurements or no-flow observations of many streams on August 19 and September 25, 1970. These measurements and the corresponding runoff values expressed as cubic feet per second per square mile of drainage area are listed in table 1. At many sites, where additional measurements had previously been made, an estimate of the frequency of occurrence of certain low flows has also been tabulated. More than 14 inches of rainfall in less than 24 hours were observed at several places. In areal extent more than 4 inches of rainfall occurred on about 6,000 square miles. </p><p>Record-breaking floods were observed at many places in north-central Ohio. Of the 50 sites for which the peak discharge was determined 40 are located on unregulated streams. Climatologic conditions normally increase water temperatures from February through July and decrease them from August through January. Summer releases from New York City's Cannonsville Reservoir were observed to decrease water temperatures by 13?C (Celsius) in 8.1 miles and by 1?C, 55.9 miles downstream from this reservoir. Releases from New York City's Pepacton Reservoir were observed to decrease water temperatures by 11?C in 31.0 miles and between 1?-3?C in 71.0 miles downstream from this reservoir. The influence of releases from these reservoirs is dependent upon five factors: thermal stratification in the reservoir, depth at which water is withdrawn from the reservoir, rate of release, distance downstream from the reservoir, and climatologic conditions.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Govt. He noted in particular the intensity of shattering and silicification of these potassium-rich granites, and the presence of unusual concentrations of tungsten , molybdenum, and tin in samples from the area. In the light of shield-wide compilations, this area again stands out as the principal geochemical anomaly for the three metals. Tungsten-bearing hot-spring tufa, metalliferous black shale in Ordovician rocks, base-metal and barite deposits in Paleozoic sedimentary rocks, and copper-molybdenum in granodiorite plutons of Creataceous age occur in the Edna Mountain dare. None of these deposits have been of much economic significance, although tungsten was mined from the hot-spring deposits during World War II.</p><p>The numerous occurrences of mineralized ground, however, along with the broad spectrum of types of mineralization, intensity of alteration, structural complexity, and abundance of intermediate to silicic igneous intrusive rocks suggest that concealed or heretofore unrecognized mineral deposits may exist in the area. Integrated geologic, geochemical, and geophysical studies on a district- wide scale might improve our un~erstanding of the factors that control the distribution, methods of emplacement, and spatial and genetic relationships (if any) of these different types of deposits. We hope that broad target areas or guidelines for mineral exploration in th.is area may be identified.</p><p>This series of maps shows the distribu t ion and abundance of mercury, arsenic, antimony, tungsten, gold, copper, l ead, and s ilver related to a geologic and aeromagnetic base in the Golconda and Iron Point 7 1/2-minute quadrangles. All samples are rock samples; most are f rom shear or f ault zones, fractures, jasperoid, breccia reefs, and altered rocks . All the samples were prepared and analyzed in truck-mounted laboratories at Wi nnemucca, Nevada. Arsenic , tungs t en, copper, lead, and si lver were determined by semiquantitative spectrogr aph i c methods by D. F. Siems and E. F. Cooley . Mercury and gold were determined by atomi c absorption methods and antimony was determined by a colorimetric method by R. M. O'Leary, M. S.
