Extensive erosion on the continental slope has occurred primarily during the Tertiary, causing major unconformities and retreat of the shelf edge to its present position. The precise age and number of erosional events is not established, but at least one major erosional event is thought to be Oligocene and related to a marine regression in response to a worldwide eustatic lowering of sea level.
\n
\n
Velocities derived from the multichannel data reveal distinctive ranges and lateral trends as functions of sediment age, depth of burial, and distance from the coastline. Seismic units beneath the shelf and slope of inferred Tertiary age range from 1.7 to 2.7 km/sec, increasing with age and depth of burial. Units interpreted as Upper Cretaceous rocks beneath the shelf range from 2.3 to 3.6 km/sec and show a distinct lateral increase across the shelf followed by a decrease beneath the present continental slope. Inferred Lower Cretaceous and Upper Jurassic rocks beneath the shelf increase from 3.7 to 4.8 km/sec from nearshore to offshore and indicate a change in facies from clastic units below the inner shelf to carbonate units beneath the outer shelf and upper continental slope. Both reflection and refraction data suggest that thin, high-velocity limestone units (5.0 km/sec) are present within the Lower Cretaceous and Upper Jurassic units beneath the outermost shelf edge, but that these change lithology or pinch out before reaching the middle shelf. Although lateral changes in velocity across the shelf and local velocity inversions appear, the interval velocities along the length of the margin show excellent continuity between Cape Hatteras and Cape Cod. The high-velocity horizons within the Lower Cretaceous and Upper Jurassic shelf-edge complex indicate the presence of a carbonate bank or reef.
\n
\n
The continental shelf off New Jersey is underlain by a trough approximately 150 km wide with up to 12 km of sedimentary fill. The oceanic basement beneath the upper continental rise is usually at a depth of 10 to 11 km and is overlain by 6 to 8 km of sediments. The rise sediment trough is separated from the shelf trough by an acoustic basement ridge 25 to 75 km wide where penetration never exceeds 6 km beneath sea level, although faulting and carbonate bank or reef complexes frequently limit penetration to 3 to 4 km in this zone. The acoustic basement ridge coincides with the East Coast Magnetic Anomaly and is interpreted as thick oceanic crust formed during the initial phase of seafloor spreading between North America and Africa. Rapid differential subsidence occurred on opposite sides of the basement ridge during the Jurassic and Early Cretaceous. Differential subsidence beneath the shelf also occurred along the margins, with narrower and shallower shelf troughs occurring off platform areas such as Cape Cod and Cape Hatteras.
","largerWorkType":{"id":4,"text":"Book"},"largerWorkTitle":"Geological and geophysical investigations of continental margins","language":"English","publisher":"American Association of Petroleum Geologists","publisherLocation":"Tulsa, OK","usgsCitation":"Grow, J.A., Mattick, R.E., and Schlee, J., 1979, Multichannel seismic depth sections and interval velocities over outer continental shelf and upper continental slope between Cape Hatteras and Cape Cod: Rifted margins, chap. of Geological and geophysical investigations of continental margins, p. 65-83.","productDescription":"19 p.","startPage":"65","endPage":"83","costCenters":[{"id":186,"text":"Coastal and Marine Geology Program","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":678,"text":"Woods Hole Coastal and Marine Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":295747,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":295743,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://archives.datapages.com/data/specpubs/history2/data/a109/a109/0001/0050/0065.htm"}],"country":"United States","otherGeospatial":"Cape Cod, Cape Hatteras","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -77.4041748046875,\n              34.49750272138159\n            ],\n            [\n              -75.091552734375,\n              34.49750272138159\n            ],\n            [\n              -75.091552734375,\n              36.097938036628065\n            ],\n            [\n              -77.4041748046875,\n              36.097938036628065\n            ],\n            [\n              -77.4041748046875,\n              34.49750272138159\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"544b6a2be4b03653c63fb1db","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Grow, John A.","contributorId":41763,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Grow","given":"John","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":503949,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Mattick, Robert E.","contributorId":50462,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Mattick","given":"Robert","email":"","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":503950,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Schlee, John S.","contributorId":99912,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Schlee","given":"John S.","affiliations":[{"id":678,"text":"Woods Hole Coastal and Marine Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":503951,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

This numerical model is patterned after an existing algorithm and has been carefully tested in rectangular and curve-sided channels with constant and variable depth. One of the common uncertainties in this class of two-dimensional hydrodynamic models is the treatment of the lateral boundary conditions. Special attention is paid specifically to addressing this problem. To maintain continuity within the domain of interest, ‘smooth’ curve-sided elements must be used at all shoreline boundaries. The present model uses triangular, isoparametric elements with quadratic basis functions for the two velocity components and a linear basis function for water surface elevation. An implicit time integration is used and the model is unconditionally stable. The resultant governing equations are nonlinear owing to the advective and the bottom friction terms and are solved iteratively at each time step by the Newton-Raphson method. Model test runs have been made in the southern portion of San Francisco Bay, California (South Bay) as well as in the Bay west of Carquinez Strait. Owing to the complex bathymetry, the hydrodynamic characteristics of the Bay system are dictated by the generally shallow basins which contain deep, relict river channels. Great care must be exercised to ensure that the conservation equations remain locally as well as globally accurate. Simulations have been made over several representative tidal cycles using this finite element model, and the results compare favourably with existing data. In particular, the standing wave in South Bay and the progressive wave in the northern reach are well represented.
","language":"English","publisher":"Elsevier","doi":"10.1016/0309-1708(79)90033-2","usgsCitation":"Walters, R.A., and Cheng, R.T., 1979, A two-dimensional hydrodynamic model of a tidal estuary: Advances in Water Resources, v. 2, p. 177-184, https://doi.org/10.1016/0309-1708(79)90033-2.","productDescription":"8 p.","startPage":"177","endPage":"184","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":552,"text":"San Francisco Bay-Delta","active":false,"usgs":true},{"id":5079,"text":"Pacific Regional Director's Office","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":325192,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"California","otherGeospatial":"San Francisco Bay","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -122.61291503906249,\n              37.385435182627226\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.61291503906249,\n              38.23170796744926\n            ],\n            [\n              -121.61865234375,\n              38.23170796744926\n            ],\n            [\n              -121.61865234375,\n              37.385435182627226\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.61291503906249,\n              37.385435182627226\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"2","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5787662ce4b0d27deb36e16f","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Walters, Roy A.","contributorId":74877,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Walters","given":"Roy","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":642384,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Cheng, Ralph T.","contributorId":69134,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Cheng","given":"Ralph","email":"","middleInitial":"T.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":642385,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

The Southeast Georgia Embayment consists of a wedge of Cretaceous and Cenozoic sedimentary rocks that thins from 5 to 8 km beneath the Blake Plateau to about 1 km over the Cape Fear Arch. North of about 31°N lat. the sedimentary section onlaps a regional unconformity characterized by a strong, smooth reflector/high-velocity refractor (5.8 to 6.3 km/sec). Rocks below the unconformity may consist of Lower Jurassic volcanic(?) rocks, crystalline basement, or a high-velocity sedimentary layer. Acoustic basement south of 31°N lat. is an i regular unconformable surface that probably truncates a varied lithology consisting of Paleozoic (and Precambrian?) igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks or Triassic to Early Jurassic igneous and sedimentary rocks in fault basins, all of which crop out or have been drilled onshore.
\n
The sedimentary section is divided into three major seismic intervals. The intervals are separated by unconformities and can be mapped regionally. The oldest interval ranges in age from Early Cretaceous through middle Late Cretaceous, although it may contain Jurassic rocks where it thickens beneath the Blake Plateau. It probably consists of continental to nearshore clastic rocks where it onlaps basement and grades seaward to a restricted carbonate platform facies (dolomite-evaporite). The middle interval (Upper Cretaceous) is characterized by prograding clinoforms interpreted as open marine slope deposits. This interval represents a Late Cretaceous shift of the carbonate shelf margin from the Blake Escarpment shoreward to about its present location, probably due to a combination of co tinued subsidence, an overall Late Cretaceous rise in sea level, and strong currents across the Blake Plateau. The youngest (Cenozoic) interval represents a continued seaward progradation of the continental shelf and slope. Net water particle excursions during storms were about 20–30 km longshelf and 5–10 km cross-shelf. Wave-induced bottom currents also resuspended sediments during periods of low mean flow. Sediment motion was observed in summer, although bottom conditions were generally tranquil. Significant changes in suspended matter concentration were observed that were only partially related to bottom currents. These changes may have been caused by biological activity or advection. Bottom currents on the mid-Atlantic region of the continental shelf were characterized by a coherent, primarily cross-shelf tidal flow of 5–10 cm s−1 and a low-frequency longshelf component of 5–20 cm s−1. The top of the Cretaceous extends smoothly seaward beneath the continental shelf and Blake Plateau, unaffected at the present shelf edge. A reflector inferred to correspond approximately to the top of the Jurassic section onlaps and pinches out against rocks below. A widespread smooth reflector probably represents a volcanic layer of Early Jurassic age that underlies only the northwestern part of the research area. A major unconformity beneath the inferred volcanic layer is probably of Late Triassic or Early Jurassic age. This unconformity dips rather smoothly seaward beneath the northern Blake Plateau, but south of a geological boundary near 31°N, it has subsided much more rapidly, and reaches depths of more than 12 km. Development of the continental margin north of the boundary began with rifting and subsidence of continental basement in the Triassic. An episode of volcanism may have been due to stresses associated with a spreading center jump at about 175 million years ago. Jurassic and Cretaceous deposits form an onlapping wedge above the inferred early Jurassic volcanics and Triassic sedimentary rocks. During Cenozoic times, development of Gulf Stream flow caused a radical decrease in sedimentation rates so that a shelf that was much narrower than the Mesozoic shelf was formed by progradation against the inner edge of the stream. South of the 31°N geological boundary, the basement probably is semi-oceanic and reef growth, unlike that in the area to the north, has been very active at the outer edge of the plateau.
","language":"English","publisher":"American Association of Petroleum Geologists","usgsCitation":"Dillon, W.P., Paull, C.K., Buffler, R.T., and Fail, J., 1979, Structure and development of the Southeast Georgia Embayment and northern Blake Plateau: Preliminary analysis: AAPG Memoir, p. 27-41.","productDescription":"15 p.","startPage":"27","endPage":"41","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":678,"text":"Woods Hole Coastal and Marine Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":346387,"rank":2,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://archives.datapages.com/data/specpubs/history2/data/a109/a109/0001/0000/0027.htm"},{"id":297034,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","otherGeospatial":"Blake Plateau, Southeast Georgia Embayment","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -87.890625,\n              22.897683210648086\n            ],\n            [\n              -87.890625,\n              36.82687474287728\n            ],\n            [\n              -74.3115234375,\n              36.82687474287728\n            ],\n            [\n              -74.3115234375,\n              22.897683210648086\n            ],\n            [\n              -87.890625,\n              22.897683210648086\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"54dd2c64e4b08de9379b3783","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Dillon, William P. bdillon@usgs.gov","contributorId":79820,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Dillon","given":"William","email":"bdillon@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"P.","affiliations":[{"id":678,"text":"Woods Hole Coastal and Marine Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":537721,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Paull, Charles K. 0000-0001-5940-3443","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0001-5940-3443","contributorId":55825,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Paull","given":"Charles","email":"","middleInitial":"K.","affiliations":[{"id":7043,"text":"University of North Carolina","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":true,"id":537722,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Buffler, Richard T.","contributorId":138526,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Buffler","given":"Richard","email":"","middleInitial":"T.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":537723,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Fail, Jean-Pierre","contributorId":138527,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Fail","given":"Jean-Pierre","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":537724,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4}]}}

We infer that this decollement zone was a long-lived structural element, intermittently growing from east to west during late Proterozoic to late Paleozoic time. Onshore displacement along the detachment surface was episodic through this long period of time, so that reliable estimates of total shortening for the entire orogen are not possible. Palinspastic restoration of only the western margin of the orogen, the area west of the Brevard zone, suggests a minimum of 280 km (175 mi) of Alleghenian displacement. Total accumulated shortening through time within the entire orogen must be considerably greater, probably exceeding hundreds of additional kilometres. © 1979 Geological Society of America.
","language":"English","publisher":"Geological Society of America","doi":"10.1130/0091-7613(1979)7<568:SDOTAO>2.0.CO;2","issn":"00917613","usgsCitation":"Harris, L.D., and Bayer, K., 1979, Sequential development of the Appalachian orogen above a master decollement - A hypothesis: Geology, v. 7, no. 12, p. 568-572, https://doi.org/10.1130/0091-7613(1979)7<568:SDOTAO>2.0.CO;2.","productDescription":"5 p. Deformation intensity within the system decreases from east to west. Differences of opinion have emerged concerning the central Appalachians as to whether the basement rocks exposed in the core of the Blue Ridge anticlinorium are rooted or are allochthonous. Available surface and subsurface stratigraphic and structural data suggest that the anticlinorium may be a rootless thick-skinned analogue to the rootless thin-skinned Powell Valley anticline in the Valley and Ridge. Both structures were produced during the Alleghenian orogeny by similar deformational processes. The form of the Powell Valley anticline is attributed to duplication of about 4,575 m (15,000 ft) of sedimentary rock during approximately 16 km (10 mi) of northwest movement above a subhorizontal décollement. Similarly, the form of the Blue Ridge anticlinorium is attributed to duplication of about 9,150 m (30,000 ft) of igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rock during a minimum of 59 km (37 mi) of northwest movement above an eastward continuation of a subhorizontal décollement within Cambrian sedimentary rocks beneath the Valley and Ridge. Thus, in northern Virginia there is a mixing of structural styles: the thick-skinned rootless Blue Ridge anticlinorium sits above a thin-skinned detachment. This relationship implies that thin- and thick-skinned styles are simply end members of a complex deformational process that includes a transition zone, where characteristics of both styles commingle. © 1979 Geological Society of America.
","language":"English","publisher":"Geological Society of America","doi":"10.1130/0016-7606(1979)90<525:SBTTBR>2.0.CO;2","issn":"00167606","usgsCitation":"Harris, L.D., 1979,  Similarities between the thick-skinned Blue Ridge anticlinorium and the thin-skinned Powell Valley anticline: Geological Society of America Bulletin, v. 90, no. 6, p. 525-539, https://doi.org/10.1130/0016-7606(1979)90<525:SBTTBR>2.0.CO;2.","productDescription":"15 p.
