Dispersive equivalence, derived from the dispersive pressure hypothesis on how inverse grading develops, was found to agree reasonably well with observed relationships between grain sizes and densities in grain-flow deposits. Furthermore, observed relationships in deposits formed in subaerial and subaqueous environments were found to be independent of fluid density as is required by dispersive equivalence. The results suggest that dispersive pressure controls the development of the inverse grading common to beach foreshore laminations, slip-face foreset strata, the basal parts of some coarse-grained turbidites, and other diverse deposits.","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"Journal of Sedimentary Petrology","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","publisher":"The Society of Economic Paleontologists and Mineralogists","doi":"10.1306/212F7789-2B24-11D7-8648000102C1865D","usgsCitation":"Sallenger, A., 1979, Inverse grading and hydraulic equivalence in grain-flow deposits: Journal of Sedimentary Petrology, v. 49, no. 2, p. 553-562, https://doi.org/10.1306/212F7789-2B24-11D7-8648000102C1865D.","productDescription":"10 p.","startPage":"553","endPage":"562","numberOfPages":"10","costCenters":[{"id":186,"text":"Coastal and Marine Geology Program","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":295429,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":295428,"type":{"id":10,"text":"Digital Object Identifier"},"url":"https://dx.doi.org/10.1306/212F7789-2B24-11D7-8648000102C1865D"}],"volume":"49","issue":"2","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5440de31e4b0b0a643c732e5","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Sallenger, A. Characteristic features in the tree-ring record indicative of disturbance include: (1) the occurrence of reaction wood, (2) abrupt changes in growth rate, (3) age of scars caused by avalanche impact, (4) age of trees in reforested tracks, and (5) examination of a “new leader.”

This study was conducted at the town of Ophir, a small community in southwestern Colorado with a severe snow avalanche hazard. Historical records indicate that snow avalanches reached the town, or its vicinity, four times during this century (1918, 1951, 1958, and 1959). Tree-ring analysis substantiated this record in part and produced evidence of at least one additional event (middle to late 1880s). From this combined information, the recurrence interval for major snow avalanches capable of endangering the town is thought to be at least as frequent as once in 20 yr. The limitations of tree-ring analysis encountered in this study are also discussed.
","language":"English","publisher":"GSA","doi":"10.1130/0016-7606(1979)90<773:TDOSAF>2.0.CO;2","usgsCitation":"Carrara, P.E., 1979, The determination of snow avalanche frequency through tree-ring analysis and historical records at Ophir, Colorado: GSA Bulletin, v. 90, no. 8, p. 773-780, https://doi.org/10.1130/0016-7606(1979)90<773:TDOSAF>2.0.CO;2.","productDescription":"8 p.","startPage":"773","endPage":"780","costCenters":[{"id":318,"text":"Geosciences and Environmental Change Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":374496,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Colorado","otherGeospatial":"Ophir","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -108.094482421875,\n              37.64794668685352\n            ],\n            [\n              -107.61932373046875,\n              37.64794668685352\n            ],\n            [\n              -107.61932373046875,\n              37.99291593373803\n            ],\n            [\n              -108.094482421875,\n              37.99291593373803\n            ],\n            [\n              -108.094482421875,\n              37.64794668685352\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"90","issue":"8","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Carrara, Paul E. pcarrara@usgs.gov","contributorId":1342,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Carrara","given":"Paul","email":"pcarrara@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[{"id":318,"text":"Geosciences and Environmental Change Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":788599,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The delays are superimposed on a general delay field of about 0.5 second extending over the volcanic rocks and the steam reservoir. It is postulated that a magma chamber under the surface volcanic rocks with a core of severely molten rock beneath Mount Hannah and a highly fractured steam reservoir probably underlain by partially molten rock at The Geysers are responsible for the observed delays. Monitoring of the interaction of factors including hydrogeologic conditions, well construction, waste volumes and characteristics, and potable-water sources is desirable to assure that fresh-water resources are not being adversely affected. An effective aquifer-system monitoring program includes on-site wells located close to an injection well and open to the next-higher permeable stratum, satellite wells located hundreds to several thousands of feet from an injection well and open to the receiving aquifer, and regional wells located miles from individual injection wells and open to the receiving aquifer. These data, for example, have allowed charting the age of the ocean floor, reconstruction of the geologic history of the major ocean basins, development of a Cenozoic and Mesozoic timescale of geomagnetic reversals, and speculation on the processes of sea‐floor spreading. Research on these and similar problems actively continued during this quadrennial, but here we discuss only a few topics in which we believe the most significant advances have been made during the last four years: the source of marine magnetic anomalies, the geomagnetic time‐scale, high‐amplitude anomalies, and studies of back‐arc basins.

Source of Anomalies

Studies of magnetic surveys over continental areas can often be constrained by the magnetic properties of samples collected from below the survey. The spectra typically display well-defined bands caused by both electronic and vibrational processes in the individual mineral constituents.Electronic transitions in the iron-bearing constituent minerals produce diagnostic minima near 0.43, 0.65, 0.85, and 0.93 mu m. Vibrational transitions in clay and water-bearing mineral constituents typically produce characteristic single or multiple features over limited spectral ranges near 1.4, 1.75, 1.9, 2.2, and 2.35 mu m. The most abundant feature-producing minerals present in these rocks are hematite, goethite, and alunite, while others frequently present are jarosite, kaolinite, potassium micas, pyrophyllite, montmorillonite, diaspore, and gypsum.This study shows that visible-near infrared spectrometry is a reliable and rapid technique for detecting and identifying clay minerals and alunite in rocks. Because these minerals are important constituents of altered rocks, the feasibility of using the visible and near infrared for detecting altered rocks by remote-sensing techniques is indicated. The microborings, morphologically distinctive, are documented with scanning electron micrographs of open borings and resin casts. Gentle dissolution of ooid aragonite permits identification of several algal genera by light microscopy and enables comparison with the microboring casts.
\n
\n
Pleistocene ooids from the Miami Limestone (Florida) contain natural casts of microborings, some of which are similar in form to Holocene examples. Significantly, these aragonite casts are more resistant to solution than surrounding ooid aragonite. They remain after most of the ooid is leached away and survive replacement of the ooid by low-Mg calcite. Dissolution or precipitation may occur along the walls of microborings, causing morphological alteration during their preservation. This points out a difficulty in the specific identification of endoliths on the basis of fossilized microborings in ancient rocks composed of original aragonite grains.
","language":"English","publisher":"Geological Society of America","doi":"10.1130/0091-7613(1979)7<216:EMATPI>2.0.CO;2","usgsCitation":"Harris, P., Halley, R., and Lukas, K.J., 1979, Endolith microborings and their preservation in Holocene-Pleistocene (Bahama-Florida) ooids: Geology, v. 7, no. 4, p. 216-220, https://doi.org/10.1130/0091-7613(1979)7<216:EMATPI>2.0.CO;2.","productDescription":"5 p.","startPage":"216","endPage":"220","numberOfPages":"5","costCenters":[{"id":186,"text":"Coastal and Marine Geology Program","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":295436,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"Bahamas, United States","state":"Florida","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -81.34277343749999,\n              23.483400654325642\n            ],\n            [\n              -75.1904296875,\n              23.483400654325642\n            ],\n            [\n              -75.1904296875,\n              27.664068965384516\n            ],\n            [\n              -81.34277343749999,\n              27.664068965384516\n            ],\n            [\n              -81.34277343749999,\n              23.483400654325642\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"7","issue":"4","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5440de28e4b0b0a643c732cd","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Harris, Paul M.","contributorId":11530,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Harris","given":"Paul M.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":503425,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Halley, Robert B.","contributorId":76244,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Halley","given":"Robert B.","affiliations":[{"id":218,"text":"Denver Federal Center","active":false,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":503426,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Lukas, Karen J.","contributorId":106428,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Lukas","given":"Karen","email":"","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":503427,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

However, there are no weights given in the literature of lesser snow geese (Anser c. caerulescens) on their winter ranges to compare with weights on the breeding grounds. For many years biologists relied on Kortright (1942) for weights of lesser snow geese, and more recently on Bellrose (1976). In the present study, snow geese from the Garwood Prairie, a rice growing area in Colorado County, Texas, were weighed to determine if weights increased before northward migration. We examined the specific assumptions for this method and derived a valid goodness of fit test.  We performed this test on 45 data sets representing a cross section of banded sampled for various waterfowl species, geographic areas, banding periods, and age/sex classes.  We found that: (1) the composite dynamic method was rejected (P <0.001) in 37 of the 45 data sets (in fact, 29 were rejected at P <0.00001) and (2) recovery and harvest rates are year-specific (a critical violation of the necessary assumptions).  We conclude that the restrictive assumptions required for the composite dynamic method to produce valid estimates of mortality rates are not met in waterfowl data.  Also we demonstrate that even when the required assumptions are met, the method produces very biased estimates of age-specific mortality rates.  We believe the composite dynamic method should not be used in the analysis of waterfowl banding data.  Furthermore, the composite dynamic method does not provide valid evidence for age-specific mortality rates in waterfowl.","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"Journal of Wildlife Management","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","publisher":"Wildlife Society","publisherLocation":"Washington, D.C.","doi":"10.2307/3800344","usgsCitation":"Burnham, K.P., and Anderson, D.R., 1979, The composite dynamic method as evidence for age-specific waterfowl mortality: Journal of Wildlife Management, v. 43, no. 2, p. 356-366, https://doi.org/10.2307/3800344.","productDescription":"11 p.","startPage":"356","endPage":"366","numberOfPages":"11","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":291998,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":291997,"type":{"id":10,"text":"Digital Object Identifier"},"url":"https://dx.doi.org/10.2307/3800344"}],"volume":"43","issue":"2","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"53eb2a90e4b0461e44764ad3","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Burnham, Kenneth P.","contributorId":95025,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Burnham","given":"Kenneth","email":"","middleInitial":"P.","affiliations":[{"id":189,"text":"Colorado Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit","active":false,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":497888,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Anderson, David R.","contributorId":92722,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Anderson","given":"David","email":"","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":497887,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Average values for feather characters generally increased as the birds advanced from yearlings to adults. Black-white surface area of greater secondary covert 2 was the single most reliable aging character identified during the study. The error rate was lowest in females (3%) when discriminant functions were used with measurements of primary 1 weight and black-white area of greater secondary covert 2 and in males (9%) when the functions were used with black-white area of greater secondary coverts 1, 2, and 3. Under continued flooding the roots of the upland variety sylvatica have decreased rates of ethanol production, very likely a result of the progressively worsening necrosis of the root system. Few of these plants survive a full year of flooding. The swamp variety biflora survives and grows well under flooded conditions due to sequential metabolic and anatomical changes in the roots. Within a month after flooding, var. biflora initiates new roots with greatly accelerated rates of ethanol production, perhaps providing for a short-term compensatory energy source. Long-term acclimation to flooding involves a replacement of these roots and increased oxygen transport to the roots. The hypoxic conditions of the soil environment are avoided, and these rates of ethanol production are similar to those of drained plants.
","language":"English","publisher":"University of Chicago Press","doi":"10.1086/283414","usgsCitation":"Keeley, J.E., and Franz, E.H., 1979, Alcoholic fermentation in swamp and upland populations of Nyssa sylvatica: Temporal changes in adaptive strategy: American Naturalist, v. 113, p. 587-592, https://doi.org/10.1086/283414.","productDescription":"6 p.","startPage":"587","endPage":"592","numberOfPages":"6","costCenters":[{"id":651,"text":"Western Ecological Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":130108,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"113","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ae0e4b07f02db6882b8","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Keeley, Jon E. 0000-0002-4564-6521 jon_keeley@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-4564-6521","contributorId":1268,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Keeley","given":"Jon","email":"jon_keeley@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[{"id":651,"text":"Western Ecological Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":315301,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Franz, E. Many data have been collected and published relating pair counts to habitat use and water conditions (e.g., Evans and Black 1956; Smith 1971; Stoudt 1971; Stewart and Kantrud 1973, 1974). However, use of pair-count data to assess wetland use tends to emphasize individual wetland units and does not consider total wetland habitat required to sustain a breeding pair on a daily or seasonal basis. We therefore attempted to determine habitat use by individually radio marked mallards during the breeding period. This paper describes home range characteristics and habitat use of a radiomarked sample of mallard hens breeding in North Dakota during 1973-75. Time budget data are also presented for 2 marked pairs of mallard pairs of mallards.
","largerWorkTitle":"Wiley","language":"English","doi":"10.2307/3800366","usgsCitation":"Dwyer, T., Krapu, G.,
