The laser altimeter data from the Apollo missions and relative age data based on crater erosion models and crater counts were used for the study. The data were correlated by using the image data bank of the Lunar Geoscience Consortium. Results of the first part of the study are inconclusive as no systematic increase in height of lavas with time could be shown. The data of the second part of the study support the conclusion that mare surfaces may have warped throughout most of the time represented by sample ages from the Apollo missions, and that the lithosphere may have become strong enough to remain stable after the time of Apollo 12 samples around 3 b.y. ago.</span></p>","largerWorkType":{"id":24,"text":"Conference Paper"},"largerWorkSubtype":{"id":19,"text":"Conference Paper"},"conferenceTitle":"Lunar and Planetary Science Conference","conferenceDate":"March 19-23, 1979","conferenceLocation":"Houston, TX","language":"English","usgsCitation":"Lucchitta, B.K., and Boyce, J.M., 1979, Altitude-age relationships of the lunar maria, Lunar and Planetary Science Conference, Houston, TX, March 19-23, 1979, p. 2957-2966.","productDescription":"12 p.","startPage":"2957","endPage":"2966","costCenters":[{"id":131,"text":"Astrogeology Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":358657,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":358656,"rank":1,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://ntrs.nasa.gov/search.jsp?R=19800039559"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Lucchitta, Baerbel K. blucchitta@usgs.gov","contributorId":3649,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Lucchitta","given":"Baerbel","email":"blucchitta@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"K.","affiliations":[],"preferred":true,"id":749372,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Boyce, J. For example, samples assigned to the middle Miocene&nbsp;</span><i>Discoaster exilis</i><span>&nbsp;Zone of coccoliths (∼ 14 ± 1 m.y.) are also assigned to the Relizian, Luisian, and lower Mohnian Stages on the basis of benthic foraminifera. Contrast of the structure below an altitude of 50 kilometers at four widely separated locations was found to be no more than a few degrees Kelvin, with slightly warmer temperatures at 30° south latitude than at 5° or 60° north. The atmosphere was stably stratified above 15 or 20 kilometers, indicating that the near-adiabatic state is maintained by the general circulation. The profiles move from near-adiabatic toward radiative equilibrium at altitudes above 40 kilometers. There appears to be a region of vertical convection above the dense cloud deck, which lies at 47.5 to 49 kilometers and at temperature levels near 360 K. The atmosphere is nearly isothermal around 100 kilometers (175 to 180 K) and appears to exhibit a sizable temperature wave between 60 and 70 kilometers. This is where the 4-day wind is believed to occur. The temperature wave may be related to some of the wavelike phenomena seen in Mariner 10 ultraviolet photographs.</span></span></p>","language":"English","publisher":"American Association for the Advancement of Science","doi":"10.1126/science.203.4382.787","issn":"00368075","usgsCitation":"Seiff, A., Kirk, D., Sommer, S., Young, R., Blanchard, R., Juergens, D., Lepetich, J., Intrieri, P., Findlay, J., and Derr, J., 1979, Structure of the atmosphere of Venus up to 110 kilometers: Preliminary results from the four Pioneer Venus entry probes: Science, v. 203, no. 4382, p. 787-790, https://doi.org/10.1126/science.203.4382.787.","productDescription":"4 p.","startPage":"787","endPage":"790","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":222721,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"otherGeospatial":"Venus","volume":"203","issue":"4382","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505b9c61e4b08c986b31d3d4","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Seiff, A.","contributorId":72934,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Seiff","given":"A.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":363662,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Kirk, D.B.","contributorId":88492,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Kirk","given":"D.B.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":363664,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Sommer, S.C.","contributorId":7005,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Sommer","given":"S.C.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":363657,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Young, R.E.","contributorId":81641,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Young","given":"R.E.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":363663,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4},{"text":"Blanchard, R.C.","contributorId":19293,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Blanchard","given":"R.C.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":363659,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":5},{"text":"Juergens, D.W.","contributorId":16984,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Juergens","given":"D.W.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":363658,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":6},{"text":"Lepetich, J.E.","contributorId":95621,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Lepetich","given":"J.E.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":363665,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":7},{"text":"Intrieri, P.F.","contributorId":95622,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Intrieri","given":"P.F.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":363666,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":8},{"text":"Findlay, J.T.","contributorId":24922,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Findlay","given":"J.T.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":363660,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":9},{"text":"Derr, J.S.","contributorId":37477,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Derr","given":"J.S.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":363661,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":10}]}}

At one site air-driven vibracorer penetrated sediment saturated with methane. The isotopic value suggests that the methane originated from active biological processes operating on peat in the top 4 m of sediment. At the other site, characterized by a large subsurface acoustic anomaly , smaller near-surface acoustic anomalies and active seepage of gas, the vibracorer obtained sediment saturated with gas composed of 98% CO2. Associated with the CO2 are minor concentrations of petroleum-like light hydrocarbons. The carbon isotopic compositions of CO2 and methane along with the chemical distribution of gaseous hydrocarbons indicate that at this site these gases are derived from thermal processes operating at depth in Norton Basin. Apparently CO2 from the decarbonation of marine limestone acts as a carrier for hydrocarbon gases that have been generated from organic matter buried in the basin. The gases reach the surface by faults and escape at the seafloor as a submarine seep. The presence of near-surface gas-charged sediment in Norton Sound reduces the stability of the seafloor. Twenty‐seven microearthquakes were recorded. Most can be well located. Only one event, located along the eastern boundary of the Eastern Cordillera, is at crustal depths. At least two events, beneath the western half of the Eastern Cordillera, are 110‐115 km in depth.</p><p>Twenty earthquakes are associated with the Bucaramanga nest (6.83°N, 73.12°W), at a depth of 158 ± 4 km. For these well‐recorded events, relative arrival times between stations vary by up to ± 0.3 sec, and the epicentral area is 4‐5 km in diameter. The complex character of these seismograms, compared with those from 110‐115 km depth events outside the nest, suggests either complexity in the rupture process or, more likely, multi‐pathing which originates near the source region.</p><p>For the upper mantle and crust above the nest, the average values for Q are about 450 for shear waves and probably over 1,000 for compressional waves, suggesting that the rays travel through lithospheric material for their entire path. The craters are circular pits, 1 to 10 m in diameter and less than 1 m deep, observed on sonographs over 20,000 km<sup>2</sup><span>&nbsp;</span>of northern Norton Sound sea floor. Craters typically are associated with acoustic anomalies, near-surface peaty mud, and gas-charged sediment.</p><p>The peaty mud is a thick (&gt;1.5 m), nonmarine pre-Holocene deposit that is now covered by a 1- to 3-m-thick layer of Holocene marine mud in the area of the craters. The peaty mud (2% to 8% organic carbon) contains abundant biogenic methane [C<sub>1</sub>/(C<sub>2</sub><span>&nbsp;</span>+ C<sub>3</sub>) = 256 to 7,669] with carbon isotope (δ<sup>13</sup>C) values of −69‰ to −75‰- Decomposition of organic debris in the peaty mud apparently charges the mud with gas. The peaty and gassy zones attenuate sound waves and cause acoustic anomalies on high-resolution seismic profiles in the area with craters.</p><p>The craters are forming now, as shown by the disruption of modern ice gouges by the craters. In the absence of storms, the gas apparently is trapped in the peaty mud in a saturated state by the cover of Holocene mud. Periodically, possibly during storms, the gas escapes through the thin Holocene cover and forms craters.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"Geological Society of America","doi":"10.1130/0016-7606(1979)90<1144:MBGCSP>2.0.CO;2","usgsCitation":"Hans, N.C., Thor, D., Sandstrom, M.W., and Kvenvolden, K.A., 1979, Modern biogenic gas-generated craters (sea-floor “pockmarks”) on the Bering Shelf, Alaska: GSA Bulletin, v. 90, no. 12, p. 1144-1152, https://doi.org/10.1130/0016-7606(1979)90<1144:MBGCSP>2.0.CO;2.","productDescription":"9 p.","startPage":"1144","endPage":"1152","costCenters":[{"id":452,"text":"National Water Quality Laboratory","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":520,"text":"Pacific Coastal and Marine Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":372149,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Alaska","otherGeospatial":"Bering Shelf","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -171.73828125,\n              62.75472592723178\n            ],\n            [\n              -160.0048828125,\n              62.75472592723178\n            ],\n            [\n              -160.0048828125,\n              65.93751437423593\n            ],\n            [\n              -171.73828125,\n              65.93751437423593\n            ],\n            [\n              -171.73828125,\n              62.75472592723178\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"90","issue":"12","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Hans, Nelson C.","contributorId":26072,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hans","given":"Nelson","email":"","middleInitial":"C.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":781782,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Thor, D.R.","contributorId":79521,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Thor","given":"D.R.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":781783,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Sandstrom, Mark W. 0000-0003-0006-5675 sandstro@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-0006-5675","contributorId":706,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Sandstrom","given":"Mark","email":"sandstro@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[{"id":5046,"text":"Branch of Analytical Serv (NWQL)","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":37464,"text":"WMA - Laboratory & Analytical Services Division","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":452,"text":"National Water Quality Laboratory","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":503,"text":"Office of Water Quality","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":781784,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Kvenvolden, Keith A. kkvenvolden@usgs.gov","contributorId":3384,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Kvenvolden","given":"Keith","email":"kkvenvolden@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[{"id":520,"text":"Pacific Coastal and Marine Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":781785,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4}]}}

Regionally, the water-yielding strata (aquifers) dip inward toward the center of San Juan Basin or toward the axes of the adjoining structural sags. Aquifers exposed or at shallow depths along the margin of the basin are deeply buried in the center of the basin.</p><p>The occurrence and movement of ground water is strongly influenced by the structural configuration of the basin; fractures along joints and faults, particularly the Puerco fault belt; distribution and lithology of the rock strata, and the relationship of the uplands recharge areas of the aquifers to the lowland areas where the most ground-water discharges.</p><p>The aggregate thickness of sedimentary rocks is more than 10,000 feet in the deepest part of the basin. In order of decreasing abundance, these rocks consist of mudstone, claystone, siltstone, sandstone, silty sandstone, coal, limestone, conglomerate, and gypsum. The main aquifers consist of sandstone or sandstone containing lenses of conglomerate except for the San Andres Limestone.</p><p>The principal aquifers, listed in descending stratigraphic order, are the Tertiary Cuba Mesa and Llaves Members of the San Jose Formation and the Ojo Alamo Sandstone; the Pictured Cliffs, Cliff House, Point Lookout, Gallup, and Dakota Sandstones; the Westwater Canyon and Salt Wash Sandstone Members of the Morrison Formation, the Cow Springs Sandstone, the Zuni Sandstone, and the Entrada Sandstone; and the San Andres Limestone, Glorieta Sandstone, and De Chelly Sandstone. These aquifer are separated by formations, that do not readily transmit water between the aquifers.</p><p>Regional movement of ground water is mainly to the San Juan and Chaco s Rivers, the Puerco River, the Rio Puerco, and their main tributaries. Ground water from aquifers overlying the Dakota Sandstone discharge within the confines of the San Juan hydrologic basin. Part of the ground water in the Dakota Sandstone, Morrison Formation, and underlying formations moves across the interbasin divide into the Black Mesa, the Blanding Basin, or to the Rio Grande Trough.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Department of Interior","doi":"10.3133/ofr791498","collaboration":"San Juan Basin Regional Uranium Study Working Paper No. 11C","usgsCitation":"Cooley, M.E., and Weist, W., 1979, Regional geohydrology of the San Juan hydrologic basin of New Mexico, Colorado, Arizona, and Utah: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 79-1498, vii, 39 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr791498.","productDescription":"vii, 39 p.","numberOfPages":"78","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":400384,"rank":2,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/1498/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":400383,"rank":1,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/1498/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, Utah","otherGeospatial":"San Juan hydrologic basin","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -110,\n              34.5\n            ],\n            [\n              -106,\n              34.5\n            ],\n            [\n              -106,\n              38\n            ],\n            [\n              -110,\n              38\n            ],\n            [\n              -110,\n              34.5\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Cooley, Maurice E.","contributorId":8077,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Cooley","given":"Maurice","email":"","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":842539,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Weist, William G.","contributorId":21526,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Weist","given":"William G.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":842540,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

The dike swarm includes a wide variety of rock types, from lamprophyre to granite porphyry belonging to a calc-alkalic suite. U-Pb dating of three silicic dikes gives concordant ages of 148 m.y., which probably indicates the time of intrusion of the entire swarm. Analyses of rare zircons in the mafic dikes yield discordant, inordinately old ages that suggest entrainment of Pre-cambrian zircons in the dike magma at depth. The regional fracture system intruded by the dikes is believed to have been produced by a crustal extension event that occurred after the Nevadan orogeny during Late Jurassic time, when subduction beneath the Sierra Nevada foothill belt jumped westward and subduction of Franciscan rocks began along the Coast Range thrust.</span></p>","language":"English","publisher":"GSA","doi":"10.1130/0091-7613(1979)7<129:LJIDSI>2.0.CO;2","usgsCitation":"Chen, J., and Moore, J.G., 1979, Late Jurassic Independence dike swarm in eastern California: Geology, v. 7, no. 3, p. 129-133, https://doi.org/10.1130/0091-7613(1979)7<129:LJIDSI>2.0.CO;2.","productDescription":"5 p.","startPage":"129","endPage":"133","costCenters":[{"id":617,"text":"Volcano Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":371369,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"California","otherGeospatial":"Sierra Nevada","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -120.33325195312499,\n              37.90953361677018\n            ],\n            [\n              -118.004150390625,\n              35.46961797120201\n            ],\n            [\n              -116.56494140625001,\n              36.359374956015856\n            ],\n            [\n              -119.43237304687499,\n              38.54816542304656\n            ],\n            [\n              -120.33325195312499,\n              37.90953361677018\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"7","issue":"3","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Chen, J.-H.","contributorId":203812,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Chen","given":"J.-H.","email":"","affiliations":[{"id":36211,"text":"GFDL/NOAA","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":779721,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Moore, James G. 0000-0002-7543-2401 jmoore@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-7543-2401","contributorId":2892,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Moore","given":"James","email":"jmoore@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"G.","affiliations":[{"id":617,"text":"Volcano Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":114,"text":"Alaska Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":779722,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Offsets typically range from less than a millimeter to several tens of centimeters but exceed 100 m in some places. The spacing between microfaults varies from a few tens of centimeters to a few tens of meters throughout much of the high Sierra Nevada. Many of these microfaults are loci of slickensided, compact fault gouge, and they are commonly mineralized by quartz veinlets with minor amounts of epidote, chlorite, and rare sulphide minerals. The microfaults are oriented in two nearly vertical conjugate sets; a north to northeast striking set showing right lateral offset and an east to northeast striking set showing left lateral offset. Microfaults with left lateral offset are more common than microfaults with right lateral offset. Most lineaments visible on aerial photographs are microfaults. The age of this microfaulting is not precisely known. It developed after consolidation of the youngest granitic plutons in the Sierra (79 m.y. B.P.) and is known to cut a late Miocene volcanic dike in one area. Slickensides along the microfaults are subhorizontal but show a slight (about 3°) westward plunging average inclination, suggesting that much of the deformation occurred prior to the westward tilting of the Sierran block in late Tertiary time. The direction of maximum horizontal extensional strain (determined as the bisector of average microfault trends) changes systematically from north to south (WNW at 38.5°N; NW at 36.5°N). A pure shear constant volume solution based on a detailed study of microfaults at 37°20′N indicates a maximum extension of 2.3% in a N61°W direction. These extension directions are remarkably parallel to late Mesozoic to present‐day tectonic extension directions in the Basin and Range province. The pattern of microfaulting demonstrates that the supposedly monolithic Sierran terrane was also affected by the late Cenozoic and possibly earlier regional extension of western North America and provides an independent criterion for determining extensional strain directions.</span></p>","language":"English","publisher":"American Geophysical Union","doi":"10.1029/JB084iB11p06041","usgsCitation":"Lockwood, J.P., and Moore, J.G., 1979, Regional deformation of the Sierra Nevada, California, on conjugate microfault sets: Journal of Geophysical Research B: Solid Earth, v. 84, no. It is often difficult, using standard geologic procedures, to establish whether a particular deposit was emplaced by a pyroclastic flow, lahar, rock avalanche, or glacier. Determination of the emplacement temperatures of clasts contained in the deposit aids in discriminating among some of these possibilities. The emplacement temperature of a clast can be estimated by analyzing its thermoremanent magnetization. To do this, oriented samples of the clasts are submitted to progressive thermal demagnetization; the directions and magnitudes of the resulting residual remanent vectors provide the information necessary to estimate the temperatures at which the clasts were emplaced. Studies of samples that were given artificial emplacement temperatures reveal that estimates are within plus or minus 25 degree C of the actual values. The temperature range within which estimates are possible depends on the thermoremanent magnetization acquisition curve of a clast. Data obtained from deposits of volcanic rock debris from Mount St. Helens, Washington, indicate that for andesitic and dacitic rocks, the range is roughly 100 to 550 degree C. The procedure probably can be applied to other geologic problems that require temperature information.</span></p>","language":"English","publisher":"GSA","doi":"10.1130/0016-7606(1979)90<633:ETOUAU>2.0.CO;2","usgsCitation":"Hoblitt, R.P., and Kellogg, K.S., 1979, Emplacement temperatures of unsorted and unstratified deposits of volcanic rock debris as determined by paleomagnetic techniques: GSA Bulletin, v. 90, no. 7, p. 633-642, https://doi.org/10.1130/0016-7606(1979)90<633:ETOUAU>2.0.CO;2.","productDescription":"10 p.","startPage":"633","endPage":"642","costCenters":[{"id":318,"text":"Geosciences and Environmental Change Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":617,"text":"Volcano Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":371204,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Washington","otherGeospatial":"Mount St. Helens sampling sites","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -122.73925781250001,\n              45.94351068030587\n            ],\n            [\n              -121.31103515625,\n              45.94351068030587\n            ],\n            [\n              -121.31103515625,\n              46.392411189814645\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.73925781250001,\n              46.392411189814645\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.73925781250001,\n              45.94351068030587\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"90","issue":"7","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Hoblitt, Richard P. 0000-0001-5850-4760","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0001-5850-4760","contributorId":220615,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hoblitt","given":"Richard","email":"","middleInitial":"P.","affiliations":[{"id":617,"text":"Volcano Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":779380,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Kellogg, Karl S. 0000-0002-6536-9066 kkellogg@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-6536-9066","contributorId":1206,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Kellogg","given":"Karl","email":"kkellogg@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"S.","affiliations":[{"id":318,"text":"Geosciences and Environmental Change Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":779381,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Examination of the lead isotope data indicates that once deposition of lead minerals begins, further exchange of lead between fluid and wall rock is insignificant. This conclusion is supported by the relatively constant isotopic composition of the lead in these ores, which is not affected by the grade of ore mineralization or type of wall rock. The values of&nbsp;</span>206<span>Pb/&nbsp;</span>204<span>Pb in some vein-type deposits exceed the maximum value known for all Mesozoic and Cenozoic igneous rocks of the Rocky Mountain region. These isotopic relations show that if ore-forming solutions are composed of meteoric water, as indicated in studies of light stable isotopes, they must have penetrated deep enough to acquire lead from Pre-cambrian rocks or sediments derived from them. The fact that some of these vein ores are now in Cenozoic igneous rocks indicates the ore fluid had an upward vertical component to its movement. The lead isotope data therefore support a circulating cell hypothesis for these kinds of ores, as suggested by many recent studies of light stable isotopes as related to mineralization. Some other deposits (Summitville, Jasper, Red Mountain district) have values of&nbsp;</span>206<span>Pb/&nbsp;</span>204<span>Pb similar to those of the large volumes of altered rock that enclose them (&nbsp;</span>206<span>Pb/&nbsp;</span>204<span>Pb ∼ 18.5), suggesting that in places the lead may have been locally derived by leaching of the adjacent rocks or from magmatogenic fluids. When the lead isotope data are treated in detail, the rocks and galenas of the Platoro caldera complex, of the central San Juan caklera complex, and of the Baughman Creek center appear to contain significant components derived from 1,400- to l,500-m.y.-old and 1,700- to 1,800 m.y.-old source materials. These also are the ages of the two main groups of rocks that comprise the Precambrian basement under the San Juan volcanic area. Although the data from the western San Juan caldera complex scatter considerably, the only obvious source for the lead seems to be the 1,700- to l,800-m.y.-old rocks or detritus of such age in Phanerozoic sediments. Where the involvement of 1,400- to l,500-m.y.-old sources is greatest, the Th/U ratio in the source material is small (calculated to be about 0.7), whereas the Th/U ratio of the 1,700- to l,800-m.y.-old source material appears to be 2.3 to 3.3. The largest Th/U values are from the western San Juan caldera complex. © 1979 Society of Economic Geologists, Inc.</span></p>","language":"English","publisher":"Society of Economic Geology","doi":"10.2113/gsecongeo.74.1.1","usgsCitation":"Doe, B.R., Steven, T.A., Delevaux, M., Stacey, J.S., Lipman, P.W., and Fisher, F.S., 1979, Genesis of ore deposits in the San Juan Volcanic Field, Southwestern Colorado-lead isotope evidence: Economic Geology, v. 74, no. 1, p. 1-26, https://doi.org/10.2113/gsecongeo.74.1.1.","productDescription":"26 p.","startPage":"1","endPage":"26","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":369779,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Colorado","otherGeospatial":"San Juan volcanic field","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -108.7481689453125,\n 37.046408899699564\n ],\n [\n -105.31494140625,\n 37.046408899699564\n ],\n [\n -105.31494140625,\n 38.47939467327645\n ],\n [\n -108.7481689453125,\n 38.47939467327645\n ],\n [\n -108.7481689453125,\n 37.046408899699564\n ]\n ]\n ]\n }\n }\n ]\n}","volume":"74","issue":"1","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"1979-02-01","publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Doe, B. Water levels in the Pompano Beach and Dixie well fields were lower during the peak of the 1976 dry season than the peak of the record low dry season in 1971. Flow in the major canals was variable during the 1976 water year compared to 1962-75 averages. Flows in Cypress Creek, Middle River, and Snake Creek at S-29 were higher than the average. Flows in Plantation Canal and South New River were equal to the 1962-75 averages, while Hillsboro, North New River, and Snake Creek at N.W. 67th Avenue were below the long-term averages. The concentrations of principal mineral constituents in surface water in Broward County were within limits established by Florida State Water Standards, with the exception of iron at one station. Total coliforms were equal to or within permissible limits for class III water and waters for public supply in Broward canals at all sites during the 1976 water year. Fecal coliform did not exceed the permissible limit for public water supply at any of the sites during the 1976 water year. Existing hydrologic and geologic data have been compiled as a base for additional investigations to determine the water-bearing characteristics of the shallow aquifer system in the area. These data include lithologic logs from 51 wells in excess of 90 feet in depth, periodic ground-water levels from 100 wells, and ground-water levels from 100 wells, and ground-water quality data from 93 wells.
