This amount of runoff is almost entirely derived from precipitation falling on the basins, and is eventually discharged into Long Island Sound. In 1965, some streamflow originated from 5.5 billion gallons of water imported from the Housatonic River basin. Mean annual runoff is generally an index of the water potentially available for development; however, in the basins, large-scale impoundment and diversion of streamflow has preempted most of the surface water available.","language":"English","publisher":"Connecticut Water Resources Commission","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the Connecticut Water Resources Commission","usgsCitation":"Ryder, R.B., Cervione, M.A., Thomas, C.E., and Thomas, M.P., 1970, Water resources inventory of Connecticut Part 4: Southwestern coastal river basins: Connecticut Water Resources Bulletin 17, ix, 49 p.; Abbreviations; Glossary; Plate A: 24.57 x 23.68 inches; Plate B: 24.20 x 22.86 inches; Plate C: 24.20 x 24.05 inches.","productDescription":"ix, 49 p.; Abbreviations; Glossary; Plate A: 24.57 x 23.68 inches; Plate B: 24.20 x 22.86 inches; Plate C: 24.20 x 24.05 inches","additionalOnlineFiles":"Y","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":258798,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/ctwrb/0017/plate-a.pdf","size":"7110","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":258799,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/ctwrb/0017/plate-b.pdf","size":"7228","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":258800,"rank":402,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/ctwrb/0017/plate-c.pdf","size":"7361","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":258801,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/ctwrb/0017/report.pdf","size":"16969","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":258802,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/ctwrb/0017/report-thumb.jpg"}],"scale":"48000","country":"United States","state":"Connecticut","otherGeospatial":"Southwestern Coastal River Basins","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -73.75,40.93333333333333 ], [ -73.75,41.38333333333333 ], [ -73.1,41.38333333333333 ], [ -73.1,40.93333333333333 ], [ -73.75,40.93333333333333 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505bcb7ae4b08c986b32d68d","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Ryder, Robert B. rryder@usgs.gov","contributorId":68294,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Ryder","given":"Robert","email":"rryder@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"B.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":463716,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Cervione, Michael A. Rainbow trout were anesthetized with MS-222 (Sandoz) or  methylpentynol and catheterized. Urine was collected at selected intervals up to 48 hr. 2. Effects of MS-222 anesthesia on urine flow and composition were isolated from the stress of catheterization by re-anesthetizing the fish 18 to 20 hr post catheterization. 3. Urine output patterns were similar following MS-222 or methylpentynol anesthesia and catheterization. Highest urine flows were measured 4 to 8 hr post treatment. The highest urine output after re-anesthetization with MS-222 was observed 2 to 4 hr post-anesthesia. 4. Highest concentrations of  Na<sup>2+</sup>, K<sup>+</sup>, Ca<sup>2+</sup>, Cl<sup>-</sup> and inorganic PO<sub>4</sub> in the urine were measured in the first 2 hr after anesthesia and catheterization. 5. Records for a few pertinent gaging stations in bordering states also are included. The records were collected and computed by the Water Resources Division of the U.S. Geological Survey under the direction of W. E. Hale, district chief. These data represent that portion of the National Water Data System collected by the U.S. Geological Survey and cooperating State and Federal agencies in New Mexico. Through September 30, 1960, the records of discharge and stage of streams and canals and contents and stage of lakes or reservoirs were published in an annual series of U.S. Geological Survey water-supply papers entitled Surface Water Supply of the United States.\"\nBeginning with the 1961 water year, surface-water records have been released by the Geological Survey in annual reports on a State-boundary basis. Distribution of these reports is limited; they are designed primarily for rapid release of data shortly after the end of the water year to meet local needs. Results of high-pressure melting experiments indicate that the primitive melt must contain at least 20% MgO in order to have olivine as a liquidus mineral. The least fractionated lavas of both volcanoes have olivine (Fa<sub>13</sub>) on the liquidus at 1 atmosphere, suggesting that the only substance lost from the primitive melt, during a rather rapid ascent to the surface, is olivine. This relation allows the primitive composition to be computed by adding olivine to the composition of an erupted lava until total MgO is at least 20 percent.</p><p>Although roughly similar, historic lavas of the two volcanoes show a consistent difference in composition. The primitive melt of Mauna Loa contains 20% more dissolved orthopyroxene, a high-temperature melting phase in the mantle, and is deficient in elements such as potassium, uranium, and niobium, which presumably occur in minor low-melting phases. The rate of absolute subsidence increases progressively toward the center of current activity on the Island of Hawaii. Honolulu, Oahu, appears to be stable; Kahului, Maui, is subsiding at 1.7 mm per year; and Hilo, Hawaii, is subsiding at 4.8 mm per year. This subsidence is apparently related to downbowing of the crust throughout a zone 400 km in diameter by the weight of volcanic material added to the crust by active volcanoes, principally Mauna Loa and Kilauea on the Island of Hawaii. The Hawaiian Arch encircles the subsiding zone and may be uplifted by material moving down and outward from the zone of subsidence.</p><p>The annual volume of subsidence is about 270×10<sup>6</sup><span>&nbsp;</span>m<sup>3</sup>, whereas the average annual volume of erupted basalt on the Island of Hawaii (based on historic records back to about 1820) is about 50×10<sup>6</sup><span>&nbsp;</span>m<sup>3</sup>. The great excess of subsidence over volcanic addition cannot be reconciled by isostatic models, and is apparently the result of other processes operating in the volcano and its basement thet are poorly understood. Probably the more important of these processes are intrusions and submarine volcanism, both of which are providing additional unseen load on the volcanoes. Furthermore, the rate of eruption may be uplifted by material moving down and outward from the zone of subsidence may be overestimated due to localized downslope movement of the margins of the The ratios of potassium to rubidium in the sanidines are, on the average, about four times greater than those of the groundmass. Separation of phenocrystic sanidine from salic melts provides an efficient method for raising the Rb content and lowering the K/Rb ratio of the melts, although the amount of differentiation probably is limited by continuous reequilibration of the alkalis between crystal and liquid phases through ion exchange. Syenites of cumulate origin will have appreciably lower Rb contents and higher K/Rb ratios than the melts from which they precipitated. Samples were analyzed by gas chromatography for DDE, DDD, DDT, aldrin, dieldrin, endrin, heptachlor, heptachlor epoxide, and gamma-chlordane insecticides.  Organochlorine insecticides in soils averaged 1.5 ppm, dry weight, and in earthworms, 13.8 ppm.  Residues in earthworms averaged nine times that in soils.  Residues ranged from a trace to 19.1 ppm in soils and from a trace to 159.4 ppm in earthworms.  Residues in beetle larvae from two fields averaged 0.6 ppm; in snails from two fields, 3.5 ppm; and in slugs from four fields, 89.0 ppm. Two central Missouri cornfields treated with aldrin at 1 lb/acre, for 16 and 15 of the past 17 years, were selected for study during 1965-67. Primary samples collected for residue analyses included soils, earthworms (Lumbricidae), crickets (Gryllidae), and two kinds of ground beetles (Carabidae) obtained during early April, June, August, and October. Vertebrates and plant seeds collected during 1967 included white-footed mice (<i>Peromyscus maniculatus</i>), toads (<i>Bufo americanus</i>), snakes (<i>Thamnophis sirtalis</i> and <i>Pituophis sayi</i>), corn (<i>Zea Mays</i>), foxtail (<i>Setaria Faberii</i>), and annual sunflower (<i>Helianthus annuus</i>). Pesticide residues consisted primarily of dieldrin, the degradation product of aldrin. Combined aldrin and dieldrin residues, as two field all-season averages, wet weight basis, were: soils, 0.31 ppm; earthworms, 1.49 ppm; crickets, 0.23 ppm; <i>Harpalus</i> ground beetles, 1.10 ppm; <i>Poecilus</i> ground beetles, 9.67 ppm; white-footed mice, 0.98 ppm; toads, 3.53 ppm; garter snakes, 12.35 ppm; and corn, foxtail, and sunflower seeds less than 0.02 ppm each. Oliver L. Austin, Jr., at the Florida State Museum, verified the species identification by noting the notched inner webs of the outer three primaries, a characteristic of the genus. No characters useful in ageing birds after the completion of the autumn molt were found.....The proposed racial subdivision of Sitta canadensis was based on misleading evidence resulting from variation of plumage age in birds assumed to be seasonally comparable, sooting of birds in industrialized parts of the country, and variation in quality of prepared specimens.","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"Wilson Bulletin","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","usgsCitation":"Banks, R., 1970, Molt and taxonomy of red-breasted nuthatches: The Wilson Bulletin, v. 82, no. 2, p. 201-205.","productDescription":"201-205","startPage":"201","endPage":"205","numberOfPages":"5","costCenters":[{"id":531,"text":"Patuxent Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":16281,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://elibrary.unm.edu/sora/Wilson/v082n02/p0201-p0205.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":198309,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"82","issue":"2","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b04e4b07f02db699259","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Banks, Richard C.","contributorId":20440,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Banks","given":"Richard C.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":338152,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}
