In Wadi Bidah, near gossan outcrops at the Rabathan prospects, another wadi sample was taken. In the Abla Formation area, seven wadi samples were taken and these samples as well as the ones described above were treated in the sluice. Accompanying this report is a drainage map of the Ablah area which shows where the samples were taken. This is about 40 percent of the number of tremors recorded by the network in 1967. In 1968 a total of 281 tremors were of sufficient magnitude to be located accurately--about 50 percent of the number of tremors in 1967 that were located accurately. \r\n\r\nAs in previous years, nearly all the earth tremors originated near, or within a few thousand feet of, the mine workings. This distribution indicates that mine-induced stress changes caused most of the seismic activity. However, over periods of weeks and months there were significant changes in the distribution of seismic activity caused by tremors that were not directly related to mining but probably were caused by adjustment of natural stresses 6r by a complex combination of both natural and mine-induced stress changes. \r\n\r\nIn 1968 the distribution of tremor hypocenters varied considerably with time, relative to active mining areas and to faults present in the mine workings. During the first 6 months, most tremors originated along or near faults that trend close to or through the active mine workings. However, in the last 6 months, the tremor hypocenters tended to concentrate in the rock mass closer to, or around, the active mining areas. This shift in concentration of seismic activity with time has been noted throughout the district many times since recording began in 1963, and is apparently caused by spontaneous releases of stored strain energy resulting from mine-induced stress changes. The Precambian rocks of the district are steeply dipping and highly folded and faulted. They are divided into three major units: (1) older metavolcanic rocks, (2) metasedimentary rocks, and (3) younger metavolcanic rocks. Massive sulfide-type deposits show stratigraphic control and are found in metasedimentary rocks and in the younger metavolcanic rocks. There appears to be a close genetic relationship between the sulfide deposits and volcanism. Deposits containing copper, zinc, gold, and silver are indicated by geologic mapping and by shallow diamond drill holes in two of the ancient mine localities. The ore estimate for the district is 2.55 million short tons computed to depths that range from 79 to 150 meters. Michelson quadrangle, Alaska","docAbstract":"Analysis of 88 samples from the Shublik formation on Fire Creek, Mt. Michelson Quadrangle, Alaska, are presented in tabular form. The results include the determination of elements by semiquantitative spectrographic analysis, phosphate by X-ray fluorescence, carbon dioxide by acid decomposable carbonate, total carbon by induction furnace, carbonate carbon by conversion using the conversion factor of 0.2727 for amount of carbon in carbon dioxide, and organic carbon by difference. \r\n\r\nA seven- cycle semilogarithmic chart presents the data graphically and illustrates the range, mode, and mean for some of the elements. The chart shows, also, the approximate concentration of the same elements in rocks similar to the black shale and limestone of the Shublik Formation. \r\n\r\nEach sample represents 5 feet of section and is composed of rock chips taken at 1 - foot intervals. The samples are keyed into a stratigraphic column of the formation. \r\n\r\nRocks of the Shublik Formation contain anomalously high concentrations of some of the elements. These same elements might be expected to be high in some of the petroleum from northern Alaska if the Shublik Formation is a source for this petroleum. Both the Timberline Creek center and the Black Creek center are located near the same E-W trending fault system.</p><p>Sites of structural weakness along the zone have apparently guided the emplacement of small diorite and quartz diorite stocks that acted as hosts for later gold-quartz-carbonate veins. Recurrent movement along the faults has fractured and locally sheared the intrusives, providing discontinuous dilatant areas for subsequent vein deposition. Most of the auriferous veins are locallized within the fractured intrusives, although gold values in the range 0.02 to 20 ppm are found in much of the limonitic shear zone material in both intrusive and country rock. The coincidence of gold centers with intrusive bodies appears to be principally a tectonic association. Fractured dilatant intrusives along a generally impermeable fault zone have functioned as pipe-like avenues of ascent for mineralizing fluids.</p><p>A close association of gold and arsenic exists in both stream-sediment and bedrock geochemical samples. Mercury is concentrated along the major E-W trending shear system, but occurs between the gold centers, implying a crude hypogene zonation outward from the centers along the mineral belt.</p><p>The Denali Copper Prospect, discovered in 1963 (Kaufman, 1964, p. 6) and currently being explored is similarly located at a structural intersection along a major shear system trending N. 75° E.
