Ostracodes were identified from 236 bottom samples taken in the region from Nova Scotia to Long Island. There is a distinctive difference between the assemblages in the northern and southern parts of this region. Many sublittoral cryophilic species are not present south of Cape Cod or the Northeast Channel, and several thermophilic species a.re not .found north of Cape Cod or Georges Bank. The ostracode assemblages in the southern part of the cold-temperate Nova Scotian province are a mixture of amphiatlantic cryophilic species and endemic, mainly thermophilic species; European forms make up approximately 50 percent of the species. Less than 25 percent of the species known from the mild-temperate Virginian province have been reported from European waters. More endemic species pass Cape Cod from the south than amphiatlantic cryophilic species do from the north. This is consistent with the fact that summer isotherms are more compressed than winter isotherms in the Cape Cod region, and the southern limit of distribution of most amphiatlantic species is regulated by summer high temperatures. In the Abla Formation area, seven wadi samples were taken and these samples as well as the ones described above were treated in the sluice. Accompanying this report is a drainage map of the Ablah area which shows where the samples were taken. Two tables give a brief description of the samples and show their tenor in detrital gold and silver.

In general, the IR imagery provides in shades of gray a record of the relative ground temperature at the time the image was taken. It has day or night capabilities for imaging large areas of terrain. In sparsely vegetated areas, midnight IR imagery shows some tonal variations that may be relate to specific rock type based on temperature differences. In heavily vegetated areas, any temperature difference that might exist between rock units is masked by the temperature difference associated with different vegetation communities; although, isolated outcrops in such areas are generally apparent because they are brighter (warmer) on the afternoon IR. On the midnight IR they may or may not be brighter according to their differences in thermal inertia. The afternoon IR image showed one fault that was not visible on the aerial photographs. In contrast, only some of the faults visible in the stereoscopic model were recognized on the IR imagery. The interpreter using IR imagery must be aware of changes in heat patterns resulting from modification of the land by man and from the effect of cloud shadows. Apparent anomalies on IR image resulting from such factors might be misinterpreted. Compared to conventional photography with the added ability of stereoscopic viewing the day and night IR provided less geologic information in the area of study. IR imagery may be useful in hydrologic studies such as the relative temperatures of alpine lakes, ponds, and marshes during the night. and day. It should prove valuable in ecological studies involving the relative temperatures of different plant communities. Roads in heavily wooded areas are easier to see on the IR image, than on conventional photography because of their temperature differences.
Color photography, as might be expected, shows the terrain in a close approximation to its natural color, and delineates some stratigraphic units and rock alterations that are indistinguishable on black and white photography.

district, southern Hijaz quadrangle, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia","docAbstract":"The Wadi Bidah district in southwest Saudi Arabia contains several ancient mines and mineral-prospects. The Precambian rocks of the district are steeply dipping and highly folded and faulted. They are divided into three major units: (1) older metavolcanic rocks, (2) metasedimentary rocks, and (3) younger metavolcanic rocks. Massive sulfide-type deposits show stratigraphic control and are found in metasedimentary rocks and in the younger metavolcanic rocks. There appears to be a close genetic relationship between the sulfide deposits and volcanism. Deposits containing copper, zinc, gold, and silver are indicated by geologic mapping and by shallow diamond drill holes in two of the ancient mine localities. The ore estimate for the district is 2.55 million short tons computed to depths that range from 79 to 150 meters. It seems probable that deeper drilling of the indicated deposits and drilling of other outlined target areas would add substantially to the ore reserves.

It was found that few of the goals have been met. Many new gaging stations are proposed to provide data to reach remaining unmet goals. The basic elements in the evaluation procedure were (1) establishment of objectives and goals of the program, (2) examination and analysis of all available data to determine which goals have already been met, (3) consideration of alternate methods of meeting the remaining goals, and (4) identification of elements that should be included in the future program.
Four categories of data form the framework of program design. They are: current-purpose data, planning and design data, data to define long-term trends, and stream environment data. An accuracy goal for planning and design data of an equivalent of 25 years of record was specified for principal streams and an equivalent of 10 years of record was specified for minor streams. It was found that many of the goals could be met by generalizing data for gaged basins by regression analysis. Appropriate changes could be made in the present data program based on this fact.
A streamflow data program based on the guidelines developed in this study is proposed for the future.

Carbon and Emery Counties, Utah, during 1968","docAbstract":"More than 20,000 local earth tremors were recorded by the seismic monitoring network in the Sunnyside mining district during 1968. This is about 40 percent of the number of tremors recorded by the network in 1967. In 1968 a total of 281 tremors were of sufficient magnitude to be located accurately--about 50 percent of the number of tremors in 1967 that were located accurately. \r\n\r\nAs in previous years, nearly all the earth tremors originated near, or within a few thousand feet of, the mine workings. This distribution indicates that mine-induced stress changes caused most of the seismic activity. However, over periods of weeks and months there were significant changes in the distribution of seismic activity caused by tremors that were not directly related to mining but probably were caused by adjustment of natural stresses 6r by a complex combination of both natural and mine-induced stress changes. \r\n\r\nIn 1968 the distribution of tremor hypocenters varied considerably with time, relative to active mining areas and to faults present in the mine workings. During the first 6 months, most tremors originated along or near faults that trend close to or through the active mine workings. However, in the last 6 months, the tremor hypocenters tended to concentrate in the rock mass closer to, or around, the active mining areas. This shift in concentration of seismic activity with time has been noted throughout the district many times since recording began in 1963, and is apparently caused by spontaneous releases of stored strain energy resulting from mine-induced stress changes. A more detailed analysis of data for Killbuck Creek was made in order to define an estimated profile of the July 5 flood for an assumed condition with no obstructions present in the channel or on the flood plain. The 50-year frequency flood profiles on Killbuck Creek were also developed for existing conditions and for the assumed condition of no obstructions.
