Water from the Colorado River Aqueduct is presently being recharged to the basin. The dissolved-solids concentration of native ground water in the recharge area is about 210 mg/liter and that of recharge water ranges from 600 to 750 mg/liter. A finite-element model indicates that without recharge the 1974 water levels in the Palm Springs area will decline 200 feet by the year 2000 because of pumpage. If the aquifer is recharged at a rate from about 7 ,500 acre-feet per year in 1973 increasing to 61,200 acre-feet per year in 1990 and thereafter, the water level in the Palm Springs area will decline about 20 feet below the 1974 level by 1991 and recover to the 1974 level by 2000. Twenty-seven additional fields, discovered since January 1, 1976, in these Federal waters are not yet sufficiently developed to permit a reasonably accurate estimate of measured reserves. Nearly 66 trillion cubic feet of gas and 6.9 billion barrels of oil are estimated to have been originally recoverable from 306 fields, 12 of which are not considered to have any remaining reserves.</p><p>Reserve estimates were made on a reservoir-by-reservoir basis for 146 fields and on a field-wide basis for the other 160 fields. This core is at present the only continuously cored Cretaceous and Tertiary section on the Northern Neck of Virginia and is one of the few deep cores in the entire Salisbury embayment. Generally these concentrates are prepared by hand panning at streamside or in a washtub and then further concentrated using heavy—liquid (bromoform) techniques in a laboratory. Concentration using heavy liquids is slow, tedious, and expensive for large surveys such as mineral evaluation of wilderness areas. In addition the cost of bromoform is expected to increase greatly because most if not all chemical companies in the United States have ceased production of the compound due to problems in meeting the safety standards of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (E.P.A.). Preliminary studies by the E.P.A. suggest a severe health hazard may be incurred by inhaling vapors of or contacting the skin with chemicals like bromoform. Heavy—liquid concentration of thousands of heavy— mineral samples carries an unavoidable risk of exposure to bromoform. The risk, expense, and time required by routine heavy—liquid concentration of heavy minerals should be eliminated by finding other methods to satisfactorily concentrate minerals whenever it is possible.</p><p>Heavy—mineral concentrates can be used in several ways in geochemical exploration and each way has certain standards for the nature and quality of the mineral concentration required. In addition to the cost reduction; the capacity, capability, and flexibility of the microprocessor systems were increased over the conventional systems. The microprocessor system can store up to 80 tide words as compared to 40 for the original systems. The microprocessor system can easily change data output formats from 11-bit ASCII to 8-bit ASCII codes, change tide sensors from float sensors to either crystal or bubbler sensors, and change other desired commands such as end of transmission (EOT) commands by simple software modifications.</p><p>The new Tsunami Microprocessor Tide System is programmed to operate in an \"Interrogate\" mode over the GOES Satellite Network. The Tsunami Microprocessor Tide System was developed for use in the Tsunami Warning Network. Drainage area can be measured from maps, while percentage of imperviousness can either be measured from aerial photographs or estimated from land-use projections. These equations are based upon the analysis of hydrologic data collected at 30 continuous-recording gaging stations with drainage areas ranging from 0.8 to 39.0 square miles, and with impervious areas These spacecraft have demonstrated the effectiveness of Earth sensing, which must now move from the research to the operational phase. Landsat-D is designed to continue the research effort, but NASA, whose charter precludes operations, has not defined an operational system. An operational Landsat has previously been proposed in technical terms, but this concept was limited to the orthographic (2-dimensional) mode demonstrated by Landsat-1, -2, and -3. Mapping involves topography as well as planimetry, and a satellite compatible with the Landsat that also resolves the 3-dimensional mode of topography is proposed. Such a satellite requires very high stability and pointing accuracy. The current state-of-the-art permits such a satellite to be built and flown in a mode suitable for automated modeling of the Earth's surface in 3- as well as 2-dimensional modes. The springs are supplied by diffuse contributions from the regional aquifer system and discrete inflows from sinkholes and losing streams, some of which are outside the Current River basin. Because the streams and springs are the primary attractions to the park, preservation of the physical, chemical, and biological quality and aesthetic appeal of the waters is important. From April 1973 to May 1975, water samples were collected from 19 wells, 7 large springs, 14 sites on the Current River, 7 sites on the Jacks Fork, and 5 tributaries to the Current River and Jacks Fork. Calcium, magnesium, and bicarbonate composed more than 90 percent of the total ionic composition of dissolved material in springs and streams and more than 95 percent in ground water, reflecting the dolomitic composition of the rocks. Dissolved-solids concentrations averaged 276 mg/L (milligrams per liter) in ground water and less than 200 mg/L in springs and streams. Total nitrate concentrations as N averaged 0.22 mg/L in ground water, 0.42 mg/L in springs, and less than 0.65 mg/L in streams. Minor element concentrations were generally low, but on one occasion anomalously high concentrations of total barium, lead, silver, and zinc were found in Blue Spring and the four stream-index stations. The only pesticides detected were 0.03 ?g/L (micrograms per liter) of 2,4-D, and 0.03 ?g/L of 2,4,5-T, and these were in the Current River below Montauk State Park during storm runoff. The streams were relatively free of sediment, except during periods of storm runoff. Fecal coliform and fecal streptococcus densities as high as 2,000 and 2,100 col/100 ml (colonies per 100 milliliters), respectively, were measured in the Jacks Fork downstream from horseback riding activities. Fecal coliform and fecal streptococcus densities of about 4,000 and 22,000 co11100 ml, respectively, were measured in the Current River during storm runoff. Otherwise, bacteria densities averaged less than 100 col/100 ml for fecal coliforms and 200 col/100 ml for fecal streptococci and appear to be relatively unaffected by swimming, camping, canoeing, and other recreational activities in and along streams. Better understanding of environmental conditions and the availability of more modern instrumentation since the original construction have led to the design and construction of new piers to provide a more stable platform for the absolute and recording instruments. In May 1975, a digital- and analog-recording fluxgate and proton magnetometer system was installed to replace a conventional magnetograph. These changes in construction and recording instrumentation were made to permit unmanned operation, to provide digital data, and to improve the quality of the data collected. Nearly two years of observations under the new mode of operation have been examined and compared with prior observations. The primary data base consisted of 98 long-term gaging-station records collected within this 27,300-square-mile (70,700-square-kilometer) headwater area of the Ohio River basin. Supplemental information was derived from 83 short-term records. \r\n\r\nMean annual runoff is at a regional minimum of less than 12 inches (300 millimeters) in an area extending from the northern West Virginia panhandle to the headwaters of the Mahoning River in Ohio. Mean annual runoff of more than 32 inches {810 millimeters) occurs in parts of the upper Cheat River basin in West Virginia. The zone of high runoff trends northeastward along the western slopes of tile Allegheny Mountains; magnitudes diminish to about 25 inches (630 millimeters) at the eastern basin boundary near Ebensburg, Pa. Runoff of this magnitude occurs also in a band across tile upper Allegheny River basin in Pennsylvania. \r\n\r\nRatios of mean annual discharge to the 30-year reference-period average were computed for each year of record for all long-term gaging stations. Annual discharges have ranged from about 30 percent to 200 percent of the 30-year mean.
