Thin surficial deposits of white silica sand occupy much of the flat coastal area of Liberia from Monrovia to Buchanan 100 km southeast; most of the sand is of good quality for glass manufacture. A lagoonal mode of origin is suggested for these essentially monomineralic deposits. Based on the average thickness of one meter and a conservative bulk density of 1.6, the easily accessible deposts along the Freeway, the Kakata highway, and the Schieffelin road cover about 68 square kilometers and contain at least 109 million metric tons of silica sand.

Known metalliferous lodes of the area are described and additional references to specific areas are given by Berg and Cobb (1967). Additional data is given in reports by Herbert and Race (1964) and Alaska Department of Mines (1950). Supplemental publications are being prepared on the general geology and mineral occurrences of the study area.

Disseminated magnetite and locally massive lenses, veins, and breccia fillings of magnetite were encountered along most of this length, but more consistently between the depths of 82 and 435 meters. The average iron content of this section in the form of magnetite was 16.4 percent. Several sections, each about 20 meters in length, contained from 22.4 to 31 percent iron.
Extrapolation of costs from current taconite iron ore operations in the United States, beneficiating ores averaging 23 percent iron, suggests that ore of similar or possibly lower iron content from Jabal Ideas could be mined and processed at comparable if not at somewhat lower costs. The beneficiation product, containing about 64 percent iron, would have a current value of $16.00 per long ton at the point of use. On the basis of information presently available there is a reasonable expectation that reserves of the order of 75 to 125 million tons could be developed at Jabal Ideas to sustain a similar operation.
Tin, not previously reported from this district, was found in the cores in small but widely distributed amounts averaging perhaps .01 percent. Although the amount is anomalous it is probably not of economic significance in the magnetite area, but one should not at this stage discount the possibility of finding higher concentrations of tin elsewhere in the district.
The origin of the magnetite in this geologic setting is attributed largely to the uralitization of high-iron pyroxene. It is believed that this interpretation is a more useful guide to further exploration than other explanations previously adduced.

The area is designated Zone II by the Colombian Inventario Minero Nacional(lMN). The geology of approximately 45 percent of this area, or 18,000 sq km, has been mapped by IMN. \r\n\r\nZone II has been a gold producer for centuries, and still produces 75 percent of Colombia's gold. Silver is recovered as a byproduct. Ferruginous laterites have been investigated as potential sources of iron ore but are not commercially exploitable. Nickeliferous laterite on serpentinite near Ure in the extreme northwest corner of the Zone is potentially exploitable, although less promising than similar laterites at Cerro Matoso, north of the Zone boundary. Known deposits of mercury, chromium, manganese, and copper are small and have limited economic potentia1. \r\n\r\nCement raw materials are important among nonmetallic resources, and four companies are engaged in the manufacture of portland cement. The eastern half of Zone II contains large carbonate rock reserves, but poor accessibility is a handicap to greater development at present. Dolomite near Amalfi is quarried for the glass-making and other industries. Clay saprolite is abundant and widely used in making brick and tiles in backyard kilns. Kaolin of good quality near La Union is used by the ceramic industry. Subbituminous coal beds of Tertiary are an important resource in the western part of the zone and have good potential for greater development. Aggregate materials for construction are varied and abundant. Deposits of sodic feldspar, talc, decorative stone, and silica are exploited on a small scale. Chrysotils asbestos deposits north of Campamento are being developed to supply fiber for Colombia's thriving asbestos-cement industry, which is presently dependent upon imported fiber. This heavy rainfall, combined with the generally wet antecedent conditions of the spring season and some runoff from snowmelt, caused considerable flooding of the rivers in the area. Property damage in Massachusetts from the flood was reported by the New England Division, Corps of Engineers (1968) to be $28 million. Most of the damage occurred where construction, both industrial and domestic, had encroached upon the flood plains of the rivers.
\nThe Sudbury and Assabet Rivers join at Concord, Mass., to form the Concord River (see fig. 1). This three-river system, which is known locally as the “SuAs-Co’’ basin, drains an area of about 405 square miles.
\nThe purpose of this report, which is one of a series covering the major flooded rivers in eastern Massachusetts, is to show flood stages and areas inundated by the March 1968 flood, to compare the severity of this flood with past floods, and to show the frequency of floods of given magnitudes which may be expected in the future at gaging stations in the basins. These basic flood data, as compiled, will serve as a broad, sound basis to assist state and local planners in such measures as flood-plain zoning and flood containment and prevention.
