Stratified sediments were divided texturally into three zones: the upper zone (0-128 m) contains mostly coarse sand and gravel; the middle zone (128-349 m) contains mostly silty clay and a few beds of sand and silt; and the lower zone (349-457 m) contains soft, unconsolidated, clayey sand. Below the lower zone, a saprolite, composed mostly of clay, grades abruptly downward at 470 m into partially altered basalt that extends to the bottom of the hole at 514 m. Calculations based on the Ghyben-Herzberg principle predicted a zone of freshwater 120-150 m thick. This principle is the theory of hydrostatic equilibrium between freshwater and more dense seawater in a coastal aquifer; it states that for each meter of ground-water elevation above sea level, the freshwater lens will depress the saltwater interface about 40 m below sea level. Freshwater or low-salinity brackish water was found in sediments far below the depth predicted by the Ghyben-Herzberg principle. These interstitial waters are probably relict ground water emplaced during times of low sea level during the Pleistocene. The landslide is about 520 m (1,700 ft) wide at its base and extends approximately from sea level to an altitude of about 343 m (1,125 ft). The slide developed on an ancient and apparently inactive landslide. Renewed movement was first detected on December 5, 1971, following removal of about 230,000 m3 (300,000 yd3) of material from the base of the slope. Although movement of the landslide has decreased since December, 1971, movement continues and the possibility exists that it could increase as a result of an earthquake, water saturation of the landslide mass, or other causes. In the most extreme case, as much as 3.8 to 7.6 million m (5-10 million ) of debris could fall into the sea at Inner Anchorage. If this took place suddenly, it could generate a wave comparable in height to the tsunami that damaged Kodiak during the Alaskan Earthquake of 1964. Analysis has been made of 204 continuous record stations, both regulated and unregulated and 651 partial-record stations operated either by the U.S. Geological Survey or Tennessee Valley Authority through the 1975 water year. Flow duration and frequency data have been tabulated for the continuous record sites using the digital computer and graphical methods. Frequency data only is presented for partial-record sites computed in most cases by comparing several discharge measurements at the site with concurrent daily mean flow for an appropriate gaging station. Flow duration data can be used to define a flow duration curve, with the slope at points on that curve used to establish the dependability of the stream to sustain a particular flow. Low-flow frequency data are presented to predict the probability that a specified flow or lesser flow will recur through time. The ground-water basin extends from Monterey Bay southeastward along the Salinas River to San Ardo, a distance of about 70 miles, and has a maximum thickness of about 2,000 feet. Annual recharge to the ground-water basin, which is derived mostly from the Salinas River, is about 290,000 acre-feet. Annual discharge, which is mostly from pumpage but also includes the consumptive use of ground water by riparian vegetation along the Salinas River, is about 507,000 acre-feet. About 45 percent of the pumpage, or about 217,000 acre-feet of water annually, returns to the ground-water system. A system of interacting hydrologic models was developed for the Salinas Valley. These models include the small-stream model, river model, two-dimensional ground-water model, and three-dimensional ground-water model. The small-stream model simulates ground-water recharge from small streams that are tributary to the Salinas River. The river model simulates ground-water recharge from the surface-water discharge in the Salinas River. The two-dimensional and three-dimensional ground-water models simulate hydraulic head in the ground-water basin. Over 3 billion gallons of water are pumped daily making the aquifer the principal source of municipal, industrial, and agricultural water supply in large parts of Florida and Georgia and to a lesser extent in South Carolina, and Alabama. Another important use is the disposal of industrial wastes and treated sewage into parts of the limestone system containing saline water. A variety of problems have developed in the aquifer in recent years, principally declining water levels, saltwater intrusion in coastal areas, water-quality degradation, and inadequate supplies of fresh ground water locally.
In 1978 the U.S. Geological Survey began a study whose goal is to provide a complete description of the hydrogeologic framework, geochemistry, and regional flow system of the limestone aquifer. A 4-year effort is planned that will include: (1) synthesis of all existing data and presentation on a series of regional hydrogeological and geochemical maps; (2) obtaining new hydrogeological information to fill data voids -- particularly where ongoing State and Federal programs are not likely to generate such data; and (3) design and calibration of a regional digital model of the aquifer system and detailed models of problem areas. Computer simulation will be used extensively to assess the effects of large withdrawals of ground water and waste injection into the aquifer.

Current and future artificial recharge of the basin may cause the potentiometric surface in an area of confined ground water to rise above land surface and water to flow from uncapped and unplugged wells. This could cause damage to structures where the soil becomes waterlogged and where buried wells begin to flow beneath the structures. A well-response model was used to generate a series of water-level hydrographs representing the response of the ground-water basin to six possible combinations of conditions for each well; one pumping rate, two artificial-recharge rate, and three natural-recharge rates. Inflow to the ground-water basin exceeds outflow for all tested combinations. According to model predictions, the accumulation of stored ground water resulting from the excess of inflow is sufficient to cause the water level in the selected wells to rise above land surface for all but one of the combinations of conditions tested. Water levels in wells are predicted to rise above the land surface as early as 1981 for the combination with the greatest excess of inflow. characteristics of the sea floor within the Baltimore Canyon Trough area. The coring took place in September, 1977 aboard the R/V ANNANDALE. During the cruise (AN-01-77), 20 vibracores were taken at 17 stations across the Continental Shelf off the coast of New Jersey (Figure 1). Table 1 shows the station locations, the water depths at each station, and the core lengths.
The objective of the study was to obtain a set of representative index properties as well as strength and compressibility data on sediments from across the shelf in the Baltimore Canyon Trough area. It was anticipated that these data, although of a reconnaissance rather than a site-specific nature, would provide a useful indication of the engineering properties of these sediments. Ultimately, these data may be used for preliminary design applications and the assessment of potential hazards. In this report, the results are presented without any interpretation. An overall evaluation of all data collected during the study, including those contained in this report, presently is underway.
Users of this report should be cautioned not to take these test results out of context. Two factors must be borne in mind. The first is that these tests were done on somewhat disturbed samples compared with those obtained through high-quality sampling programs onshore. Much disturbance is inevitable offshore but the significance of the disturbance on these test results has not yet been evaluated. The second factor is that these data are only part of the total set available from this project. A complete analysis of all data may lead to conclusions that are different from those based on this set of data only.
The tests reported herein were performed by Geotechnical Engineers Inc., 1017 Main Street, Winchester, Massachusetts 01890, under Contract 14-08-0001-16232 of the U.S. Geological Survey. Richard Brown and Charles Osgood performed the engineering properties tests. Sally A. Wood of the U.S. Geological Survey handled the transfer of vibracores between the U.S. Geological Survey and Geotechnical Engineers Inc. and, also, assisted in the preparation of this report.

The design specifications for both wells called for 24-inch diameter surface casing cemented in place to a depth of about 430 feet, with 16-inch liner and slotted casing from the surface to a depth of about 700 feet. Each well was pumped continuously for 32 hours in a step-drawdown test. This test consisted of four steps, with discharge rates varying from about 500 to 1,150 gallons per minute. The drawdown test for well 21 gave an estimated transmissivity of 17,300 gallons per day per foot, and a final specific capacity of slightly less than 11 gallons per minute per foot of drawdown. The step-drawdown test and later drawdown and recovery test on well 22 gave an average transmissivity of 32,600 gallons per day per foot, and a final specific capacity of about 15 gallons per minute per foot of drawdown. The data collected indicated that the aquifer in the vicinity of well 22 is more permeable than the aquifer around well 21. Both wells furnish a satisfactory quantity of excellent-quality water. The dissolved-solids content of water from wells 21 and 22 is 232 and 301 mg/liter respectively.
