This proposal resulted from a study in which the basic steps were (1) definition of long-term program goals, (2) examination and evaluation of available data to determine which goals have been achieved, and (3) consideration of alternate programs and techniques for meeting the remaining goals.</p><p>The following conclusions are drawn from the study. Goals have been achieved on many of the principal unregulated streams; operation of 11 new or reactivated gages on principal streams are needed to satisfy needs. However, the goals cannot be met on unregulated minor streams with present data and analytical techniques. Few of the goals can be achieved with the available data for major or minor streams which are regulated, which are fed by springs or receive significant return flows, or which are affected by extensive channel losses. These streams will require river-systems studies which necessitate collection of complete records of diversions, return flows, upstream storage, and information relative to exchange between surface flow and ground water. The studies are being made in support of epidemiological investigations of the Surveillance Project to provide general information pertaining to the occurrence and distribution of chemical elements in rocks, soils, plants, and water throughout the State. Emphasis is placed on the occurrence and distribution of elements in the natural environment, though studies of the effects of some types of chemical pollution are necessarily included. The objectives and plans for the three phases of the Survey that are directed at the rocks, soils, and vegetation are described in the progress report for the first six-month period; those for the phase of the project concerned with the water are described by Gerald L. Feder in a later section of the present report. The addition of this latter phase significantly expands the scope of our study and increases its relevance to studies of human and animal health. Mr. Feder has a valuable background in the geology and hydrology of Missouri, and we are most pleased that he has joined us in this The host rocks are arkosic sandstones, deposited in intermontane basins under fluvial conditions, and derived from the granitic cores of mountain ranges that flank the basins. The host rocks are Eocene and possibly Paleocene in age and are, or were, overlain by a sequence of continental tuffaceous siltstones, sandstones, and conglomerates 400-700 meters thick.&nbsp;</p><p>Most of the ore is unoxidized and lies below the water table. It contains pyrite, uraninite, coffinite, marcasite, hematite, ferroselite, and native selenium(?). The ore bodies range in size from a few hundred to several hundred thousand tons of material containing 0.10-5 percent U308. As mined, the ore averages about 0.25 percent U<sub>3</sub>0<sub>8</sub>.</p><p>The ore bodies are genetically related to and lie at the margins of large tongues of altered sandstone. The character of the alteration and the distribution of several elements within and near the altered sandstone suggest that the ore-bearing fluid was ground water, neutral to slightly alkaline and oxidizing with respect to the elements being transporter.</p><p>Roll-type deposits in littoral and fluvial sandstones have recently been discovered in the Gulf Coastal Plain area of Texas. These deposits appear to be similar to the Wyoming deposits in form, distribution of elements, and genesis.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological
