This report summarizes and indexes the current usage of geologic names of exposed rock-stratigraphic units of Ordovician age in Kentucky. The Ordovician rocks crop out mainly in two separate areas in Kentucky (fig. 1). The larger area of outcrop, covering much of the middle part of the state, forms the major part of the Blue Grass region of Kentucky. Outcrops of this region are contiguous with outcrops of Ordovician rocks in southwestern Ohio and southeastern Indiana. The smaller area of fairly continuous outcrops of Ordovician rocks lies south of the Blue Grass region along the Cumberland River and its tributaries. These outcrops are contiguous with outcrops of Ordovician rocks in Tennessee. A few isolated exposures of Ordovician rocks lie outside the areas of continuous outcrop.

semi-infinite elastic medium representing bedrock. There are two programs. One is for plane strain motions, that is, motions in the plane perpendicular to the long axis of the structure, and the other is for antiplane strain motions, that is motions parallel to the axis. The seismic input is provided by specifying what the motion of the rock-soil boundary would be if the soil were absent and the boundary were a free surface. This may be done by supplying a magnetic tape containing the values of particle velocity for every boundary point at every instant of time. Alternatively, a punch card deck may be supplied giving acceleration values at every instant of time. In the plane strain program it is assumed that the acceleration values apply simultaneously to every point on the boundary; in the antiplane strain program it is assumed that the acceleration values characterize a plane shear wave propagating upward in the underlying elastic medium at a specified angle with the vertical. The nonlinear hysteretic behavior of the soil is represented by a three-dimensional rheological model. A boundary condition is used which takes account of finite rigidity in the elastic substratum. The computations are performed by an explicit finite-difference scheme that proceeds step by step in space and time. Computations are done in terms of stress departures from an unspecified initial state. Source listings are provided here along with instructions for preparing the input. Sand and gravel units of the unconsolidated deposits, which occur principally in valley bottoms, form the best aquifers and commonly provide well yields of several hundred gallons per minute. Carbonate aquifers are the most productive consolidated rock units. Ground water in the Hudson River basin is generally hard and may contain appreciable amounts of iron, salts in solution, or sulfur locally. Basic data on the availability of ground water in the Hudson River drainage area are compiled in (1) a hydrogeologic map of the drainage basin; (2) a table of well depths, yields, concentrations of selected chemical constituents, and hardness of ground water, listed by county and aquifer type; (3) a short text describing the occurrence of ground water in the basin; and (4) a bibliography of ground-water reports pertinent to the area studied. The first schemes investigated combine finite-element spatial discretization with split-step time stepping schemes that have been found useful in finite-difference computations. Because of the large number of numerical integrations performed in space and the large sparse matrices solved, these finite-element schemes were found to be economically uncompetitive with finite-difference schemes. A very promising leapfrog scheme is proposed which, when combined with a novel very fast spatial integration procedure, eliminates the need to solve any matrices at all. Additional problems attacked included proper propagation of waves and proper specification of the normal-flow boundary condition. This report indicates work in progress and does not come to a definitive conclusion as to the best approach for finite-element modeling of surface-water problems. The results presented herein represent findings obtained between September 1973 and July 1976.

Useful results were obtained from 59 of these attempts. The field measurements were carried out aboard the USGS research vessel SAMUEL P. LEE. The refraction lines were concentrated in three major areas: (1) the outer continental shelf from Portlock Bank to Chirikof Island; (2) Shelikof Strait; and (3) the continental slope between Kodiak Seamount and Portlock Bank.
Sound sources used during the refraction survey included 1326 and 2501 cubic inch air gun arrays, and a 160 kilojoule arcer. Most of the sonobuoys employed were U. S. Navy SSQ-41A and SSQ-41B models; a few commercial buoys (Refraction Technology and Fairfield Industries) were also used. Line lengths ranged from 5 to 30 km, and maximum subbottom penegration was 5.1 km.
The field data were recorded on magnetic tape as well as a conventional facsimile recorder. Data reduction was accomplished using the slope-intercept method with the assumption of plane layers. A computer program was used to calculate interval velocities, thicknesses, reflection times, and critical distances for each of the refracting layers; the program also generated a travel time plot showing refracted arrivals as well as wide angle reflections associated with each of the interfaces.

Low-flows of small uncontrolled streams are zero for the State except for northeastern and south-central Oklahoma.

These 664 were selected from a network of about 2,100 observation wells for which water-level measurements are in the files of the Geological Survey.
Hydrographs of 60 wells show that the downward trends of groundwater levels continued in areas of heavy pumping and in some areas not affected by pumping. In west-central Polk County, the most notable area of pumping, levels in the Floridan and other aquifers declined to new record lows in 1975 but recovered 3 to 6 feet in 1976. In north Florida where fluctuations of ground-water levels are primarily influenced by changes in stage of the Suwannee River, levels declined 18 and 23 feet in Suwannee and Hamilton Counties. In northwest Florida, declines in level in the sand-and-gravel aquifer ranged from less than 1 foot to 2 feet. In Nassau County, in Northern Brevard County, and at Stuart in Martin County--in the northeastern, eastern, and southwestern coastal parts of the State--levels declined to new record lows also.
