Its contents apply to selection of landing sites for spacecraft, planning traverses for vehicles, and to other aspects of planetary exploration that involve numerical expression of topographic form primarily for engineering purposes. The report is divided into three separate sections. Part I treats descriptive and predictive techniques for terrain slope. Part II describes the analysis of fine-scale surface roughness for the NASA Lunar Roving Vehicle, which was first deployed on Apollo mission 15 in the Hadley Rille area of the Moon. Part III applies the method of numerical taxonomy to multivariate characterization of lunar terrain and geologic map units. Therefore, new wells will be drilled away from the coast. The source of water for the planned artesian aquifer well field will be leakage from the water-table aquifer above. A digital model of the leaky aquifer system indicates that long-term yield of about 20 million gallons per day can be expected without the cone of depression dropping low enough to cause saltwater intrusion. Some types of land development could remove potential recharge from the area. Model tests with decreased leakage indicate that a large amount of potential recharge water would have to be removed from the system to effect an appreciable lowering of the cone of depression. Lowering the recharge potential by 20 percent apparently would have little effect on the cone. Lowering the recharge potential by 60 percent would, according to the model, increase the maximum depth of the cone by 27 percent. Land development that would redistribute potential recharge, rather than drain it away from the system, would have little effect on the aquifer beneath the well field.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri7889","usgsCitation":"Bush, P.W., 1978, Hydrologic evaluation of part of central Volusia County, Florida: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 78-89, v, 50 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri7889.","productDescription":"v, 50 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":411746,"rank":3,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_35276.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":158124,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1978/0089/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":95601,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1978/0089/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Florida","county":"Volusia County","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -81.192,\n              29.2\n            ],\n            [\n              -81.192,\n              29.067\n            ],\n            [\n              -81.133,\n              29.067\n            ],\n            [\n              -81.133,\n              29.2\n            ],\n            [\n              -81.192,\n              29.2\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a19e4b07f02db605642","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Bush, P. A digital model of the ground water/surface-water system was stressed with recharge and withdrawal functions determined from a linear reservoir model of the soil zone.

The geohydrologic system includes a regional aquifer which containssand and gravel ranging in age from Pliocene through Pleistocene. The regional aquifer is unconfined in the western part of the watershed and confined in the eastern part. The confining layer, or blue clay, in the east is of Pleistocene age and comprises principally saturated eolian silts with very fine sand interbeds overlying a basal lacustrine clay. Where unconfined conditions exist in the regional aquifer, perennial flow of Willow Creek is sustained principally by ground-water discharge. Where confined conditions exist, the low hydraulic conductivity of the blue clay effectively isolates the regional aquifer from Willow Creek.

The stream-aquifer models were tested by comparing simulated against measured water levels and streamflow during 1975 and 1976. Agreement between simulated and observed values was obtained by modifying initial estimates of aquifer hydraulic conductivity and specific storage.

Future ground-water discharge to Willow Creek (base flow) was simulated by super-imposing different patterns of ground-water withdrawals upon variations from average recharge for a monthly climatic sequence identical with the period 1931 to 1954. Frequency analyses of the simulated monthly base flows showed that they would be less than 12 feet3 per second at least 50 percent of the time under all but completely undeveloped conditions. Simulated water-level declines in the regional aquifer at the end of the pumping season after a drought period similar to that of the 1930's were less than 5 feet where unconfined conditions exist and were more than 80 feet where confined conditions exist.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri7867","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with Lower Elkhorn Natural Resources District and Conservation and Survey Division, Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln","usgsCitation":"Dugan, J.T., and Lappala, E.G., 1978, Predictive analyses of ground-water discharges in the Willow Creek Watershed, northeast Nebraska: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 78-67, v, 66 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri7867.","productDescription":"v, 66 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":363537,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1978/0067/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":157351,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1978/0067/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States ","state":"Nebraska","otherGeospatial":"Willow Creek watershed","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -97.97744750976562,\n              41.964085349226664\n            ],\n            [\n              -97.24067687988281,\n              41.964085349226664\n            ],\n            [\n              -97.24067687988281,\n              42.36919824433563\n            ],\n            [\n              -97.97744750976562,\n              42.36919824433563\n            ],\n            [\n              -97.97744750976562,\n              41.964085349226664\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a18e4b07f02db605281","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Dugan, Jack T.","contributorId":102456,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Dugan","given":"Jack","email":"","middleInitial":"T.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":197175,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Lappala, Eric G.","contributorId":23182,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Lappala","given":"Eric","email":"","middleInitial":"G.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":197174,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

These sea bed micro-features are regionally widespread but are not uniformly distributed. Furthermore, the microrelief, texture, and lithologic structure of sea bed sediments have been significantly modified by the disruptive processes associated with ice gouge formation. \r\n\r\nAn analysis of some 10,.200 individual gouges shows that the density of ice gouges increases with increasing latitude, increasing slope gradients, and decreasing water depth. Across the northern half of the shelf few trackline segments are free of ice gouges; in the southern portion numerous segments contain no ice gouges. However, ice gouges extend at least as far south as Cape Prince of Wales Shoal. Densities of over 200 gouges per km of trackline are not uncommon in water depths less than 30 m ,but no values higher than 50 km are encountered in water deeper than 50 m. No ice gouges have been observed in water depths exceeding 58 m. Saturation ice gouge densities (greater than 300/Pan) occur along the eastern side 6f Barrow Sea Valley and the northeast flank of Hanna Shoal. \r\n\r\nMaximum gouge incision depths per km of trackline are greatest in water 36 to 50 m deep . A maximum incision depth of 4.5 m occurs in the 35-40 m water depth interval. Individual ice gouge events wider than 100 m, most produced by multi-keeled ice fragments, are found between 31 and 45 m depths. The dominant azimuth of gouge furrows shows no preferred orientation on the Chukchi Sea shelf; only locally does bathmetric control of the trend of gouges appear. \r\n\r\nThe occurrence of current-produced bedforms within individual ice gouges suggests an interaction between slow-moving grounded or gouging ice keels and swift currents. In other cases, current-produced bedforms, interpreted as being in equilibrium with existing flow regimes, lie adjacent to ice gouges, suggesting contemporary ice gouging to water depths of at least 43 m.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr78693","usgsCitation":"Toimil, L.J., 1978, Ice-gouged microrelief on the floor of the eastern Chukchi Sea, Alaska: a reconnaissance survey: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 78-693, 44, [68] leaves :ill., maps ;28 cm.; (113 p. - PGS), https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr78693.","productDescription":"44, [68] leaves :ill., maps ;28 cm.; (113 p. - PGS)","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":144818,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0693/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":39316,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0693/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a0ae4b07f02db5fb725","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Toimil, Lawrence J.","contributorId":53806,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Toimil","given":"Lawrence","email":"","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":163160,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The injection system presently consists of Injection Well A, Injection Well B, and two deep monitor wells all completed open hole in the lower limestone of the Floridan aquifer and one shallow monitor well completed in the upper limestone of the Floridan aquifer. The two deep monitor wells are used to observe hydraulic and geochemical effects of waste injection in the injection zone at locations 1.5 miles south-southeast and 1.9 miles north-northwest of the center of the injection site. The shallow monitor well, used to observe any effects in the first permeable zone above the 220-foot-thick confining bed, is 100 feet northeast of Injection Well A.

Since injection began in July 1963, about 14.2 billion gallons of acidic industrial waste consisting of an aqueous solution of nitric acid, inorganic salts, and numerous organic compounds have been injected into a limestone aquifer containing saline water. From July 1963 to April 1968, the pH of the waste was raised to about 5.5 with aqueous ammonia prior to injection. Since 1968, no aqueous ammonia has been added and the waste has been injected at a pH of about 2.3. Wellhead injection pressures at both injection wells in December 1977 averaged 170 pounds per square inch and the hydraulic pressure gradient was 0.52 pound per square inch per foot of depth to the top of the injection zone. Increases in pressures since 1970 at the north and south monitor wells ranged from 21 to 31 pounds per square inch. The pressure in the shallow monitor well declined about 6 pounds per square inch.

No changes were detected in the chemical characteristics of water from the shallow monitor and the north monitor wells. Since late 1973, concentrations of bicarbonate and dissolved organic carbon in water from the south monitor well have increased. These increases in bicarbonate and dissolved organic carbon have been accompanied by increases in gas content of water at the point of discharge from the well and a distinctive odor like that of the waste. In samples of water from the south monitor well, concentrations of nitrogen gas ranged from 5.1 to 12.7 milligrams per liter, methane from 24 to 70 milligrams per liter, and carbon dioxide from 14 to 56 milligrams per liter.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr78355","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the Florida Department of Environmental Regulation","usgsCitation":"Pascale, C.A., and Martin, J., 1978, Hydrologic monitoring of waste-injection wells near Pensacola, Florida, March 1970 - December 1977: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 78-355, v, 78 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr78355.","productDescription":"v, 78 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":413197,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0355/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":142485,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0355/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Florida","otherGeospatial":"Pensacola","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -87.4352973536881,\n              30.602838004118823\n            ],\n            [\n              -87.4352973536881,\n              30.347295597488937\n            ],\n            [\n              -87.03446660204348,\n              30.347295597488937\n            ],\n            [\n              -87.03446660204348,\n              30.602838004118823\n            ],\n            [\n              -87.4352973536881,\n              30.602838004118823\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a1ae4b07f02db6065aa","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Pascale, Charles A.","contributorId":99978,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Pascale","given":"Charles","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":161691,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Martin, J.B.","contributorId":32923,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Martin","given":"J.B.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":161690,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Colton used his own geologic mapping and previously published geologic maps to compile one map having a single classification of geologic units.  The resulting published color paper map (USGS Map I-855-G, Colton, 1978) was intended for land-use planning and to depict the regional geology.  In 1997-1999, another USGS project designed to address urban growth issues was undertaken. This project, the USGS Front Range Infrastructure Resources Project, undertook to digitize Colton's map at 1:100,000 scale, making it useable in Geographical Information Systems (GIS). That product is described here.\r\n      In general, the digitized map depicts in its western part Precambrian igneous and metamorphic rocks, Pennsylvanian and younger sedimentary rock units, major faults, and brecciated zones along an eastern strip (5-20 km wide) of the Front Range.  The central and eastern parts of the map (Colorado Piedmont) show a mantle of Quaternary unconsolidated deposits and interspersed outcrops of sedimentary rock of Cretaceous or Tertiary age. A surficial mantle of unconsolidated deposits of Quaternary age is differentiated and depicted as eolium (wind-blown sand and silt), alluvium (river gravel, sand, and silt of variable composition), colluvium, and a few landslide deposits.  At the mountain front, north-trending, Paleozoic and Mesozoic formations of sandstone, shale, and minor limestone dip mostly eastward and form folds, fault blocks, hogbacks and intervening valleys.  Local dikes and sills of Tertiary rhyodacite and basalt intrude rocks near the range front, mostly in the Boulder area.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/i855G","usgsCitation":"Colton, R.B., 1978, Geologic map of the Boulder-Fort Collins-Greeley area, Colorado (Version 1.1): U.S. Geological Survey IMAP 855, 1 Plate: 40.69 × 31.15 inches; Dataset; Metadata, https://doi.org/10.3133/i855G.","productDescription":"1 Plate: 40.69 × 31.15 inches; Dataset; Metadata","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":107012,"rank":700,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_9734.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"},"description":"9734"},{"id":190278,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":6091,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/imap/855/G/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"scale":"1","country":"United States","state":"Colorado","city":"Boulder, Fort Collins, Greeley","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -105.375,\n              40.625\n            ],\n            [\n              -105.375,\n              40\n            ],\n            [\n              -104.625,\n              40\n            ],\n            [\n              -104.625,\n              40.625\n            ],\n            [\n              -105.375,\n              40.625\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","edition":"Version 1.1","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b0ae4b07f02db69d474","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Colton, Roger B.","contributorId":17967,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Colton","given":"Roger","email":"","middleInitial":"B.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":272415,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The annual mean and annual standard deviation were chosen to represent the development potential of the water resource, while the mean, standard deviation, and the 50-year recurrence interval of the annual flood series were chosen to represent flood potential. Low-flow characteristics were not used because of the inability to model them by regression analysis. Ephemeral streams in the vicinity of the Columbia Plateau were ignored for the same reason.

The results of the study indicate that the standard errors of estimate of the regression relations were good approximations of the medians of the Bayesian distributions of estimates of inaccuracy and that for the streamflow variables used in the study, little if any improvement can be expected in the regression relations by the collection of additional streamflow data. Improved transferability of streamflow information for these variables has a prerequisite of more accurate information-transfer models.

It is therefore recommended that the future streamflow-data network contain only those streamflow stations needed to provide data for (1) the design or operation of water-resources projects, (2) the investigation and study of water resources, and (3) monitoring long-term trends in streamflow.

","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr78167","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the Detailed geologic mapping indicates that galena, sphalerite and pyrite occur sporadically in a zone at least 1,830 m. long and 6-30 m. wide. The sulfides occur in tuff, or in dark chert and dark shale adjacent to tuff in the upper part of the Lisburne Group of Mississippian age. The sulfides, together with the tuff, dark shale, and dark chert host, rocks probably are part of a stratiform, massive sulfide deposit that may have formed from volcanic exhalations. The stratiform occurrence of the sulfides is limited to a single thrust plate which is a part of a widespread tectonic breccia. The deposit may represent a fragment of a much more extensive stratiform deposit that was severely disrupted and dismembered by isoclinal folding, faulting and shearing. Other areas along the northern front of the Brooks Range particularly those associated with iron staining and the assemblage of dark chert, dark shale and tuff of the Lisburne Group should be examined for concentrations of galena and sphalerite. Because of the highly deformed nature of the terrain, further exploration should concentrate either on finding the edges of buried, dismembered fragments of the original stratiform deposit or on geophysical techniques that may locate the dismembered fragments at depth.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr7870C","usgsCitation":"Nokleberg, W.J., and Winkler, G., 1978, Geologic setting of the lead and zinc deposits, Drenchwater Creek area, Howard Pass Quadrangle, Western Brooks Range, Alaska: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 78-70, Report: 16 p.; 1 Plate: 39.74 x 32.95 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr7870C.","productDescription":"Report: 16 p.; 1 Plate: 39.74 x 32.95 inches","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":423342,"rank":3,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0070-c/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":423341,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0070-c/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":144290,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0070-c/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Alaska","otherGeospatial":"Howard Pass Quadrangle, Western Brooks Range","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -156,\n              69\n            ],\n            [\n              -159,\n              69\n            ],\n            [\n              -159,\n              68\n            ],\n            [\n              -156,\n              68\n            ],\n            [\n              -156,\n              69\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ae0e4b07f02db688237","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Nokleberg, Warren J. 0000-0002-1574-8869 wnokleberg@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-1574-8869","contributorId":2077,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Nokleberg","given":"Warren","email":"wnokleberg@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[{"id":312,"text":"Geology, Minerals, Energy, and Geophysics Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":161548,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Winkler, Gary R.","contributorId":75513,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Winkler","given":"Gary R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":161549,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Establishment of replacement vegetation was attempted on the cleared areas with indifferent success.

The report outlines methods used to remove the vegetation and to discourage its subsequent regrowth. Costs of the clearing operation are given by vegetation type, and descriptions of the procedures used for establishing new vegetation are given.

Clearing and subsequent maintenance of parts of the flood plain were hampered by channel clogging and subsequent flooding of adjacent areas. Part of the area selected for clearing lies within the San Carlos Reservoir. The wide range of water level in the reservoir further aggravated maintenance of an inflow channel. Both draglines and a dredge were used to open a channel to the reservoir. Because the flow of the Gila River is intermittent, vegetation becomes established in the channel at the head of the reservoir during periods of no flow. The report concludes that the presence of the vegetation promotes silt deposition and further clogging. Inflow channel maintenance is a persistent problem that will require well-planned repetitive clearing of vegetation at the head of the reservoir.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Because of this dynamic nature, special consideration must be made in planning for development, and. caution must be exercised in site selection for facilities to be emplaced in the coastal zone. All types of coastal processes from continuously active normal processes to the low frequency-high intensity rare event must be considered. Site-specific evaluation-s considering the broad range of possible processes must precede initiation of development. \r\n\r\nAn example of the relation between coastal processes and a proposed resource treatment facility is presented for Icy Bay, Alaska. Icy Bay is the only sheltered bay near many of the offshore tracts leased for petroleum exploration in the 1976 northern Gulf of Alaska OCS (Outer Continental Shelf) lease sale. Consequently, it has been selected as a primary onshore staging site for the support of offshore exploration and development. The environment of Icy Bay has many potentially hazardous features, including a submarine moraine at the bay mouth and actively calving glaciers at the bay's head which produce many icebergs. But most significant from the point of view of locating onshore facilities and pipeline corridors are the high rates of shoreline erosion and sediment deposition. If pipelines or any onshore staging facilities are to be placed in the coastal areas of Icy Bay, then the dynamic changes in shoreline position must be considered so that man-made structures will not be eroded away or be silted in before the completion of development.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr791693","usgsCitation":"Molnia, B.F., 1978, Impact of coastal processes on resource development with an example from Icy Bay, Alaska: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 79-1693, 13 leaves, [6] leaves of plates :maps ;28 cm.; (20 p. - PGS), https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr791693.","productDescription":"13 leaves, [6] leaves of plates :maps ;28 cm.; (20 p. - PGS)","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":142318,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/1693/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":38212,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/1693/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a08e4b07f02db5f9c3e","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Molnia, Bruce F. bmolnia@usgs.gov","contributorId":4002,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Molnia","given":"Bruce","email":"bmolnia@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"F.","affiliations":[{"id":410,"text":"National Center","active":false,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":161289,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The basins ranged in size from 1.68 to 297 square miles. Sediment yields ranged from 2,890 to 21,000 tons per square mile where surface-mining techniques predominated, and from 732 to 3 ,470 tons per square mile where underground mining methods predominated. Yields, in terms of tons per acre-foot of runoff, ranged from 2.2 to 15 for surface-mined areas, and from 0.5 to 2.7 for underground-mined areas. Water and sediment discharges from direct runoff during storms were compared for selected surface-mined and underground-mined areas. Data points of two extensively surface-mined areas, one from the current project and one from a previous project in Beaver Creek basin, McCreary County, Kentucky, grouped similarly in magnitude and by season. Disturbed areas from mining activities determined from aerial photographs reached 17 percent in one study area where extensive surface mining was being practiced. For most areas where underground mining was practiced, percentage disturbed area was almost negligible. Trap efficiency of Fishtrap Lake was 89 percent, and was 62 percent for Dewey Lake. Average annual deposition rates were 464 and 146 acre-feet for Fishtrap and Dewey Lakes, respectively. The chemical quality of water in the Levisa Fork basin has been altered by man 's activities.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/wri77123","usgsCitation":"Curtis, W.F., Flint, R.F., George, F.H., and Santos, J.F., 1978, Fluvial sediment study of Fishtrap and Dewey Lakes drainage basins, Kentucky-Virginia: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 77-123, xi, 92 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri77123.","productDescription":"xi, 92 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":366194,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1977/0123/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":158260,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1977/0123/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":465926,"rank":3,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_35124.htm","text":"Dewey Lake","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":465927,"rank":4,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_35125.htm","text":"Fishtrap Lake","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Kentucky, Virginia","otherGeospatial":"Dewey Lake, Fishtrap Lake","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -82.7764892578125,\n              37.38979975341983\n            ],\n            [\n              -82.29583740234375,\n              37.38979975341983\n            ],\n            [\n              -82.29583740234375,\n              37.75334401310656\n            ],\n            [\n              -82.7764892578125,\n              37.75334401310656\n            ],\n            [\n              -82.7764892578125,\n              37.38979975341983\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e47c3e4b07f02db4a7e1d","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Curtis, William F.","contributorId":70433,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Curtis","given":"William","email":"","middleInitial":"F.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":196888,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Flint, Russell F.","contributorId":91144,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Flint","given":"Russell","email":"","middleInitial":"F.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":196889,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"George, Frederick H.","contributorId":16462,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"George","given":"Frederick","email":"","middleInitial":"H.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":196886,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Santos, John F.","contributorId":21530,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Santos","given":"John","email":"","middleInitial":"F.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":196887,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4}]}}
