The Pineland Sands area consists of 770 square miles of surficial glacial outwash, which is undergoing increasing ground-water development for irrigation. The aquifer material is commonly very fine sand to fine gravel, and grain size generally increases from south to north. Thickness, transmissivity, and theoretical well yields are highest in the northern part. In places, saturated thickness exceeds 100 feet, transmissivity exceeds 20,000 feet squared per day, and expected well yields exceed 2,000 gallons per minute.

\n

Water in the aquifer is chemically suitable for irrigation. It is calcium bicarbonate water generally containing dissolvedsolids concentrations of 100-300 milligrams per liter.

\n

An estimated long-term water budget for the aquifer involves inflow and outflow of 295 cubic feet per second. Over 80 percent of recharge to the aquifer is directly from snowmelt and spring rain; the remainder is from underflow across the northern boundary of the aquifer and locally from streams and lakes. Over 90 percent of discharge from the aquifer is flow to streams and lakes; the remainder is through evapotranspiration.

\n

A mathematical model of the surficial aquifer was made to facilitate analysis of the hydrologic system. The model was calibrated through simulation of the natural ground-water flow system. Subsequent applications of the model to estimate effects of future ground-water development indicate that much of the system can safely support long-term, large-scale withdrawals.

\n

Results of model analysis show that present development (withdrawals totaling 3.3 cubic feet per second) has no significant effect on the aquifer system. Simulations of hypothetical withdrawals of 60 to 120 cubic feet per second resulted in computed water-table declines as great as 12 feet in places. Most pumpage is derived from intercepted base flow to streams, thus reducing streamflow. Similarly, some lake levels can be expected to decline in response to nearby intensive development.

 Estimating relations have been developed to provide engineers and designers with improved techniques for defining flow-frequency characteristics to satisfy hydraulic planning and design requirements. The magnitude and frequency of floods up to the 100-year recurrence interval can be determined for most streams in Minnesota by methods presented. By multiple regression analysis, equations have been developed for estimating flood-frequency relations at ungaged sites on natural flow streams. Eight distinct hydrologic regions are delineated within the State with boundaries defined generally by river basin divides. Regression equations are provided for each region which relate selected frequency floods to significant basin parameters. For main-stem streams, graphs are presented showing floods for selected recurrence intervals plotted against contributing drainage area. Flow-frequency estimates for intervening sites along the Minnesota River, Mississippi River, and the Red River of the North can be derived from these graphs. Flood-frequency characteristics are tabulated for 201 paging stations having 10 or more years of record.

explanatory text. Seepage investigations showed that during periods of base flow, the surface-water regime cannot be predicted on the basis of flow-duration figures alone. The investigations also indicate that the streambeds are permeable for extended reaches throughout the areas studied. Inconsistent data on gain or loss for a given reach are assumed to be indicative of the changes in rate of ground-water recharge or discharge. Analysis of surface-water quality since 1972 showed high nitrate (as NO3) concentrations (4 to 18 mg/liter) in the Cortland area and in Factory Brook. The nitrate source is probably from human activities. Although ground water in the Gridley Creek basin is moderately hard (34 to 140 mg/liter CaCO3), it generally meets standards of the New York State Department of Health. Lake Carlton straddles the line between Lake and Orange Counties in central Florida. The 382-acre (155-hectare) lake is highly eutrophic and subject to virtually perpetual algal blooms. The Florida Game and Fresh Water Fish Commission has proposed to restore the lake to a less eutrophic state by dewatering the lake long enough to allow the muck on its bottom to dry and compact. Lake Carlton would be permanently sealed off from Lake Beauclair which presently serves as a source of nutrient enriched water for Lake Carlton. On the assumption that the seasonal rainfall would be normal, and that the dewatering phase would begin on March 1, the predicted time required to dewater the lake at a pumping rate of 50,000 gallons (190 cubic meters) per minute is 21 days. The average rate of pumping required to maintain the lake in a dewatered condition is computed to be 2,400 gallons (9.08 cubic meters) per minute. If pumping is ended May 31, the predicted altitude to which the lake would recover by October 31 as a result of net natural input is 56.2 feet (17.1 meters) above sea level. Raising the lake level to 63 feet (19.2 meters) above sea level by October 31 would require that the net natural input be supplemented at an average rate of about 4,860 gallons (18.4 cubic meters) per minute between May 31 and October 31.

Fumarole ejecta accompanied the thermal activity from March to September, but the ejecta had no constituents that suggest a magmatic source. Estimates of that part of the total heat flux that would account for the observed snow and ice loss show that the heat-flow increase was roughly one order of magnitude, from about 2 megawatts at 10 watts per square meter, averaged over Sherman Crater before 1975, to about 30 megawatts at 180 watts per square meter, during 1975. Almost half of the glacier that occupied the basin of Sherman Crater was melted in 1975. \r\n\r\nThe new activity generated great concern among the public and the government agencies responsible for geological evaluation of potential hazards and for protection of life and property. The past geologic history, current topography, rock alteration, and location of major fumarolic activity indicate that large rock avalanches and mudflows on the east slope in Boulder Creek valley are the potential hazards of most significance related to present conditions. The most probable types of large mass movements would be mudflows, having speeds of as much as 50 kilometers per hour, that would originate from mixtures of snow, ice, and melt water and avalanches of structurally weak clay-rich rocks that make up the rim of Sherman Crater. Similar mudflows from the volcano have traveled at least 12 kilometers 8 times during the past 10,000 years. A possible worst case event, however, might be a larger, air-cushioned avalanche of as much as 20 to 30 million cubic meters that could hit Baker Lake at speeds of more than 300 kilometers per hour and generate a wave of water large enough to overtop Upper Baker Dam. \r\n\r\nAt least 30 million cubic meters of potentially unstable material occurs as hydrothermally altered remnants of the rim of Sherman Crater and could provide the required volume for the estimated worst case event or for smaller avalanches and mudflows. An earthquake, steam explosion, or eruption could provide a suitable trigger to initiate movement. Although such triggering events were possible before 1975, the probability might have been as much as 10 times greater in 1975 because of the increased thermal activity. The threat of avalanches and mudflows on Boulder Creek valley and Baker Lake prompted the closure by management agencies of the Boulder Creek drainage and of Baker Lake and its shoreline in the summer of 1975. Additionally, Baker Lake was kept below full pool at a level calculated to prevent overtopping of Upper Baker Dam by waves which could result from a worst-case avalanche. \r\n\r\nIn 1975 an interdisciplinary program of seismic, tilt, gravity, gas, hydrologic, petrologic, thermal infrared, and photographic studies by Federal and university scientists was initiated to evaluate the impact of the current thermal activity and to monitor changes that might indicate an impending eruption. By March 1976 only one small earth- quake had been identified beneath Mount Baker. Tilt and gravity changes have been observed but cannot be attributed solely to volcanic causes. The data available thus far provide no evidence of an impending eruption, but they cannot be fully interpreted without many additional geophysical and geochemical measurements, as it is not yet possible to clearly distinguish volcanic effects from non- volcanic background effects. \r\n\r\nInasmuch as current activity continues unchanged - without steam explosions, eruptions, or frequent or large earthquakes - the probability of a suitable trigger for large avalanches and mudflows should decrease and should approach that of a more average year. Such an average year would have a hazard probability at least as great as that which existed before 1975, although that level of hazard was not recognized at the time by the public or by administrative agencies. Lake Panasoffkee, in midwest Sumter County of central Florida, receives water from three creeks and discharges water through Outlet River at an average daily rate of 207 cubic feet per second. The eastern shore of the lake is marsh and wooded swamp with inflow to the lake coming from the northeast and southeast. About 15 percent of the basin contributes surface water to the lake and about 50 percent of the 420-square-mile topographic drainage basin contributes ground water to the lake. The water from the remainder of the basin either evaporates from low areas or directly recharges the Floridan aquifer for discharge outside the basin. The maximum stage on record is 44.28 feet above mean sea level and the minimum stage on record is 37.65 feet above. The lake level is partly affected by the Wysong Dam and has stabilized in recent years at about 40.95 feet above mean sea level. The quality of the water is generally good. The lake supports a favorably balanced fish population even though minor fish kills were reported in 1973 and 1974. These kills were probably the result of algal blooms.

Spring ponds (small spring-fed bodies of water) are natural features of some glaciated areas and have a continuous flow of ground water entering through their bottoms and exiting through surface outlets.

\n

Dredging has been used to restore ponds that have been filled in part or totally by sediment. The purpose of the study was to determine the hydrology of selected spring ponds and the effect that dredging has had on the ponds. Three ponds, Maxwell, Sunshine, and Krause Ponds, in northeastern Wisconsin were studied. Sediments were dredged from Sunshine and Krause Ponds. Maxwell Pond, which was not dredged, was a hydrologic control to aid in distinguishing changes produced by dredging from those that were natural.

\n

Ground water from glacial deposits is the source of most of the water flowing in spring ponds and streams in the study area. Average annual ground-water recharge in the study area is about 13 inches. Ground-water discharge contributed 97 percent of the total flow in the Red River, a typical stream in the study area, during the 1973 water year.

\n

Ground water and surface water in the study area are of a calcium magnesium bicarbonate type. Dissolved-solids concentration ranges from 170 to 250 milligrams per liter. Temperature of ground water discharging into the spring ponds in the study ranged from 6 to 7 Celsius.

Hydrologic characteristics of the Koehn Lake area were investigated to determine the effects of external stresses on the system. Unconsolidated deposits are more than 900 feet thick in the central part of the basin. Cantil Valley fault, in the central part of the basin, acts as a barrier to the flow of ground water.

Average annual recharge to aquifers from percolation of surface water and from underflow, between 1958 and 1976, was 10,200 acre-feet. Average annual consumptive use, between 1960 and 1976, was 32,000 acre-feet, 21,800 acre-feet more than the recharge, implying that average annual withdrawal from storage is about 22,000 acre-feet. Storage depletion in 1976 was 50,000 acre-feet, considerably higher than the average. The cumulative storage depletion has caused a decline in water levels and a pumping depression about 5 miles southwest of Koehn Lake.

Ground water in storage in 1976 was about 4 million acre-feet, and ground water in storage above the 500-foot depth excluding the saline water under Koehn Lake was about 2 million acre-feet.

Water samples were collected from 24 wells for chemical analysis. Comparison of analyses made during this study with historical water-quality analyses indicated no significant change. A recent reversal in ground-water gradient southwest of Koehn Lake may allow the saline water below Koehn Lake to invade the fresh-water aquifer.

An investigation of flood flows from small drainage basins in Minnesota was initiated to aid in the design of bridges, culverts and other highway drainage structures. The program provides peak flow data on streams having drainage areas generally less than 50 square miles, placing particular emphasis on those less than 10 square miles. Basin parameters being investigated are drainage area, length of main stream, slope of main channel, basin altitude, forest cover, and storage area. Each of the 138 gaging stations are equipped with crest-stage gages, and 10 stations have continuous recorded records of stage and precipitation. The relative magnitude of flood flows for different hydrologic regions are shown in graphs which relate maximum discharge to drainage area. Each station record contains location, drainage area, records available, type of gage, on-site structure elevations, bankfill stage, and annual maximum stage and discharge data.

Also included are 59 crest-stage partial-record stations and 45 low-flow partial-record stations. Additional water data were collected at various sites, not involved in the systematic data collection program, and are published as miscellaneous measurements. Locations of hydrologic stations are shown on figures 1 and 2. These data represent that part of the National Water Data System operated by the U.S. Geological Survey and cooperating State and Federal agencies in Connecticut.
