It extends from Duluth to the Canadian border.</p>\n<p>Both maximum and minimum altitudes for Minnesota occur in the watershed; 2.301 ft (701 ) at Eagle Mountain, about 12 mi (19 km) northwest of Grand Marais, and 602 ft (184 m), the normal level of Lake Superior. Total relief is nearly 1,700 ft (518 m). The North Shore area (Duluth to the Canadian border) has a southeastward slope that is especially precipitous adjacent to Lake Superior.</p>\n<p>Conforming to this topography, the drainage includes a series of 17 southeastward-flowing streams averaging 23 mi (36 km) in length, with an average gradient from headwaters to mouth of about 57 ft/mi (10.8 m/km). The streams are deeply entrenched and characterized by swift flows, many rapids and waterfalls, and especially steep gradients in the 3 to 5 mi (4.8 to 8.0 km) before entering Lake Superior.</p>\n<p>The Pigeon River drains the extreme northern part of the watershed and forms the international border between the United States and Canada. More than half of the 610 mi<sup>2</sup> (1580 km<sup>2</sup>) drainage basin of the Pigeon River lies in Canada.</p>\n<p>The Nemadji River and tributaries drain the Nemadji Basin, the southern detached part of the watershed. Topographically, the Nemadji Basin is roughly spoon shaped with maximum total relief in Minnesota of about 800 ft (244 m). More than half of the approximately 55-mi (88-km) long river flows northeastward through Wisconsin before reaching Lake Superior.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Tremendous areas of lowlands were inundated along the Indus River and major tributaries. Landsat data made it possible to easily measure the extent of flooding, totaling about 20,000 km<sup>2</sup> within an area of about 400,000 km<sup>2</sup> south from the Punjab to the Arabian Sea.</p><p>The Indus River data were used to continue experimentation in the development of rapid, accurate, and inexpensive optical techniques of flood mapping by satellite begun in 1973 for the Mississipi River floods. A statistical relationship of forests and hydrological variables with forest succession constraints predicted forest acreage totals for 16 forest categories within 70% or better of actual values in two-thirds of the cases.  Using time-lapsed photography covering 42 years, 23 categories were described.  The succession trend of vegetation since 1930, by sedimentation, had been toward mixed hardwoods, except for isolated areas.  Satellite MSS Band 7 imagery was used to map the current vegetation into three main categories and for assessment of acreage. II. Runoff processes","docAbstract":"<p>Combined use of radioisotope tracer, flow rate, specific conductance and suspended-sediment measurements on a large field plot near Stanford, California, has provided more detailed information on surface and subsurface storm runoff processes than would be possible from any single approach used in isolation. Although the plot was surficially uniform, the runoff processes were shown to be grossly nonuniform, both spatially over the plot, and laterally and vertically within the soil. The three types of processes that have been suggested as sources of storm runoff (Horton-type surface runoff, saturated overland flow, and rapid subsurface throughflow) all occurred on the plot. The nonuniformity of the processes supports the partial- and variable-source area concepts. Subsurface storm runoff occurred in a saturated layer above the subsoil horizon, and short travel times resulted from flow through macropores rather than the soil matrix. A model is proposed in which uranium mobility is controlled by two competing processes. Uranium is liberated from the volcanic rocks through dissolution of the glassy constituents and is carried in solution as a uranyl carbonate complex. Uranium is subsequently removed from solution by adsorption on secondary oxides of iron, titanium, and manganese, as observed in fission-track maps of aquifer rocks. The model explains the poor correlation of dissolved uranium with depth within tuffaceous sequences in which percolation of ground water is predominantly downward. Good positive correlation of dissolved uranium with dissolved Na, total dissolved solids, and total carbonate supports the glass dissolution model, while inverse correlation of dissolved uranium with U<sup>234</sup>/U<sup>238</sup> ratios of waters implies uranium is being absorbed by a relatively insoluble, surficial phase. Alpha radioactivity of Test Site water is primarily caused by high U<sup>234</sup> contents, and beta activity is highly correlated with dissolved K (K<sup>40</sup>). Small amounts of dissolved radium, Pb<sup>210</sup>, and Po<sup>210</sup> are present but no evidence was found for alpha activity sources related to nuclear testing (Pu, U<sup>235</sup> ). In the Ozark Mountains of Missouri, a rapid change from a stream-channel growth of abundant willows (<i>Salix</i> spp.), touch-me-nots (<i>Impatiens capensis</i>), and sedges such as <i>Carex Frankii</i> and <i>Eleocharis</i> spp. to an abundant growth of bluestars (<i>Amsonia illustris</i>) indicates a rapid increase in depth to water. Demand has increased from about 1,800 million gallons per day in 1955 to 3,500 million gallons per day in 1975 (MacKichan, 1957; Murray and Reeves, 1977). By the year 2020, water demand is expected to be eight times that in 1975 (Barnard and Dent, 1976). Historically, about 75 percent of the demand, excluding that required for power generation, has been met by withdrawals from the water-bearing zones (aquifers) in Iowa's ground-water reservoir. Because this percentage is expected to remain about the same, the anticipated future demands will require extensive withdrawals from the ground-water reservoir. The increasing stress on the ground-water system, which already is severely stressed in several places in the state, will create development and management problems that will require hydrologic information to solve. In order to provide this information, the lowa Geological Survey in cooperation with the U.S. Geological Survey has instituted a series of investigations to define, describe, and evaluate the major aquifers in Iowa's groundwater reservoir.
