The survey was intended to define more precisely a positive magnetic anomaly that had been found from an earlier survey (Ratte and others, 1969, Pl. 1 and p. E30-31) by reducing the original flight elevation from 10,500 feet to 8,000 feet and the flight line spacing from 1 mile to 1/2 mile. The results of the more detailed survey are shown in the accompanying figure (fig. 1). The anomaly in question lies in the center of the map and has a peak value of 915 gammas and a closure of approximately 460 gammas. On the earlier map (Ratte and others, op. cit.) the closure is approximately 80 gammas.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr6984","usgsCitation":"Eaton, G.P., and Ratte, J.C., 1970, Significance of an aeromagnetic anomaly in the southwestern part of the Blue Range primitive area, Arizona-New Mexico: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 69-84, Report: 5 p.; 1 Plate: 12.16 x 17.80 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr6984.","productDescription":"Report: 5 p.; 1 Plate: 12.16 x 17.80 inches","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":431625,"rank":4,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1969/0084/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":431624,"rank":3,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1969/0084/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":416449,"rank":2,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_8460.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":145443,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1969/0084/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Arizona, New Mexico","otherGeospatial":"Blue Range primitive area","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -109.25,\n              33.5\n            ],\n            [\n              -109.25,\n              33.352\n            ],\n            [\n              -109.375,\n              33.352\n            ],\n            [\n              -109.375,\n              33.5\n            ],\n            [\n              -109.25,\n              33.5\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49fae4b07f02db5f3cf2","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Eaton, Gordon P.","contributorId":67077,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Eaton","given":"Gordon","email":"","middleInitial":"P.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":167836,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Ratte, James Clifford","contributorId":9268,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Ratte","given":"James","email":"","middleInitial":"Clifford","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":167835,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

The chemical is rapidly toxic to many species. Sea lampreys, bowfin, and channel catfish are the most sensitive species. Carp are more sensitive than trouts or sunfishes. Use of 33NCS in selective control of freshwater fishes or sea lampreys requires precise control because its toxicity is strongly influenced by variations in water quality.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Bureau of Sport Fisheries and Wildlife","collaboration":"Out-of-print","usgsCitation":"Marking, L.L., King, E.L., Walker, C.R., and Howell, J.H., 1970, Toxicity of 33NCS (3'-chloro-3-nitrosalicylanilide) to freshwater fish and sea lampreys: Investigations in Fish Control 38, 16 p. ; 26 cm.","productDescription":"16 p. ; 26 cm","startPage":"0","endPage":"16","numberOfPages":"16","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":164882,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/ifc/036/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":91309,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/ifc/036/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a4ee4b07f02db6280ec","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Marking, Leif L.","contributorId":52239,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Marking","given":"Leif","email":"","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":217343,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"King, Everett L.","contributorId":54922,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"King","given":"Everett","email":"","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":217344,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Walker, Charles R.","contributorId":10469,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Walker","given":"Charles","email":"","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":217341,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Howell, John H.","contributorId":39720,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Howell","given":"John","email":"","middleInitial":"H.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":217342,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4}]}}

All three isolates were examined by negative staining of fathead minnow (FHM) monolayer tissue culture concentrates and IHN virus was also examined in thin sections of FHM cells. Viruslike particles were observed in infected tissues, but similar structures were not found in uninfected cultures. All three isolates were bullet-shaped, but oval and truncated forms were also observed. Mean measurements of particles from IHN-virus-infected tissue were 158 × 90 mμ. They consisted of an outer coat 15 mμ thick, a core 60 mμ in diameter, subunits about 5 mμ, and an axial pore about 20 mμ in diameter. The three isolates were morphologically indistinguishable from one another and the greater length of OSD was considered insignificant. IHN, SRCD, and OSD viruses were tentatively placed in the rhabdovirus group, but serological studies are needed to determine if they are antigenically identical or should be included as separate members. Concern has been expressed in the United States because mercurials have been used extensively in industry and as prophylactic and therapeutic agents in fish hatcheries. Rucker and Amend (1969) showed that yearling rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri) and chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) exposed to mercurials accumulated excessive amounts of mercury in many tissues. Further, Rucker and Amend (1969) concluded that wild fish that ate mercury-contaminated fish also could contain high mercury levels. Although mercury was eliminated from most tissues within several months, substantial levels remained in the kidney for more than 33 weeks after the last exposure. Since high levels of mercury can be retained in the kidney for an undetermined time, it is possible that returning adult salmon exposed to mercurials as juveniles could constitute a potential hazard to public health. The purpose of this study was to determine whether such fish contained high residual levels of mercury.
","language":"English","publisher":"Taylor & Francis","doi":"10.1577/1548-8640(1970)32[192:ROMBS]2.0.CO;2","usgsCitation":"Amend, D.F., 1970, Retention of mercury by salmon: Progressive Fish-Culturist, v. 32, no. 4, p. 192-194, https://doi.org/10.1577/1548-8640(1970)32[192:ROMBS]2.0.CO;2.","productDescription":"3 p.","startPage":"192","endPage":"194","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":654,"text":"Western Fisheries Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":313968,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"32","issue":"4","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"568e4927e4b0e7a44bc41a50","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Amend, Donald F.","contributorId":106543,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Amend","given":"Donald","email":"","middleInitial":"F.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":587861,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The Taunton River basin is separated from the basins of short streams draining to the coast by low divides on the east, south, and southwest. On the west and north, the basin is bordered by the Ten Mile, Charles, Neponset, and Weymouth River basins. Principal tributaries of the lower Taunton River are Segreganset, Threemile, Mill, Assonet, Nemasket, and Winnetuxet Rivers. The upper part of the basin is drained by the Canoe, Wading, and Rumford Rivers which empty into Mill and Threemile Rivers and by the Matfield and Town Rivers which unite to form the Taunton River.
\n
This report presents in tabular form selected records of wells, test wells, and borings collected during a study of the basin from 1966 to 1968 in cooperation with the Massachusetts Water Resources Commission, and during earlier studies. This report is released in order to make available to the public and to local, state, and federal agencies basic ground-water information that may aid in planning water-resources development. Basic records contained in this report will complement an interpretative report on the Taunton River basin to be released at a later date.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Boston, MA","doi":"10.3133/70139638","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, Water Resources Commission","usgsCitation":"Williams, J.R., and Willey, R.E., 1970, Taunton River basin: U.S. Geological Survey Massachusetts Hydrologic - Data Report 12, Report: 102 p.; 2 Plates, https://doi.org/10.3133/70139638.","productDescription":"Report: 102 p.; 2 Plates","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":297614,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"}],"scale":"48000","country":"United States","state":"Massachusetts","otherGeospatial":"Taunton River","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -71.39465332031249,\n              41.65034063112266\n            ],\n            [\n              -71.39465332031249,\n              42.132858175814626\n            ],\n            [\n              -70.78216552734375,\n              42.132858175814626\n            ],\n            [\n              -70.78216552734375,\n              41.65034063112266\n            ],\n            [\n              -71.39465332031249,\n              41.65034063112266\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"54dd2c67e4b08de9379b379f","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Williams, John R.","contributorId":107260,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Williams","given":"John","email":"","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[{"id":595,"text":"U.S. Geological Survey","active":false,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":539473,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Willey, Richard E.","contributorId":30972,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Willey","given":"Richard","email":"","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":539474,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Umatilla is 3.2 kilometers below McNary Dam. Accumulations of radionuclides in the Pasco to Umatilla reach estimated by the two methods agree within about 8%. In October 1965 approximately 16,000 curies of gamma emitting radionuclides were resident in bed sediments of the river between the Hanford reactors and McNary Dam. Concentrations and accumulations of chromium-51, zinc-65, cobalt-60, manganese-54, and scandium-46 generally are much higher near McNary Dam than they are in the vicinity of the reactors. These changes are caused by an increase downstream from the reactors in the proportion of the bed sediment that is fine grained and the proportions of the transported zinc, cobalt, manganese, and scandium radionuclides associated with sediment particles.
","language":"English","publisher":"American Geophysical Union","doi":"10.1029/WR006i001p00130","usgsCitation":"Nelson, J.L., and Haushild, W., 1970, Accumulation of radionuclides in bed sediments of the Columbia River between Hanford reactors and McNary Dam: Water Resources Research, v. 6, no. 1, p. 130-137, https://doi.org/10.1029/WR006i001p00130.","productDescription":"8 p.","startPage":"130","endPage":"137","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":622,"text":"Washington Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":321895,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Oregon, Washington","city":"Pasco, Umatilla","otherGeospatial":"Columbia River, McNary Dam","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -119.48593139648438,\n              45.857499316676666\n            ],\n            [\n              -118.82263183593749,\n              45.857499316676666\n            ],\n            [\n              -118.82263183593749,\n              46.27673288302042\n            ],\n            [\n              -119.48593139648438,\n              46.27673288302042\n            ],\n            [\n              -119.48593139648438,\n              45.857499316676666\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"6","issue":"1","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2010-07-09","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"574eb5ade4b0ee97d51a838b","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Nelson, Jack L.","contributorId":41671,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Nelson","given":"Jack","email":"","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":630906,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Haushild, W.L.","contributorId":48953,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Haushild","given":"W.L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":630907,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Structurally the county is in the northern part of the Iowan Basin, and the sedimentary units of Cambrian through Devonian age dip southward at 9 to 14 feet per mile. Three major glacial advances, the Nebraskan, Kansan, and Wisconsin, covered all or part of the county during the Pleistocene Epoch and left behind glacial drift consisting of 0 to 125 feet of till and related outwash deposits. De posits of Holocene age, aside from surficial soil, are thin and scattered.

Ground water occurs in the sedimentary units of Cambrian through Mississippian age and in the glacial drift and outwash deposits of Quaternary age. The chief aquifers, in ascending order, are the deep Cambrian sandstones, Jordan aquifer, St. Peter Sandstone, Devonian and Mississippian limestones and dolomites, and the Pleistocene glacial drift and related interglacial deposits. Units between the St. Peter Sandstone and the Devonian limestones, the Platteville, Decorah, Galena, and Maquoketa Formations, are of low permeability and are considered to be an aquiclude in comparison to the overlying and under lying units.

The deep Cambrian sandstones will yield about 60 gpm (gallons per minute) to an individual well; the Jordan aquifer about 1,200 gpm; the St. Peter Sandstone 30 to 200 gpm; the Devonian limestones and dolomites 120 to 200 gpm; and the glacial outwash or shallow bedrock generally will yield 10 gpm or more. The Jordan aquifer supplies large quantities of water for municipal and industrial use at Mason City. Pumping tests on wells tapping the Jordan in that area show that the aquifer has a transmissibility of about 35,000 gallons per day per foot and a storage coefficient of 2 x 10-4 Pumping in the Mason City area from 1912 to 1969 has produced about 200 feet of draw down in the areas of maximum withdrawal.

Ground water in Cerro Gordo County is of suitable chemical quality for domestic, industrial, or municipal use. The total dis solved solids ranges from 152 mg/l (milligrams per liter) in water from the shallow bedrock to 885 mg/l in water from the deep Cambrian sandstones. Water from the Jordan, which is the most productive aquifer in the county, generally contains less than 500 mg/l dissolved solids.

Ground water is the major source of water supplies throughout Cerro Gordo County. The majority of wells in the county are used for domestic and stock supplies, but the largest withdrawals of water are for municipal and industrial supplies. Municipal pumpage in the county in 1968 was about 1.5 billion gallons; industrial pumpage was about 1.8 billion gallons and most of the water was obtained from the Jordan aquifer. If future development of water from the Jordan aquifer is to be to the best economical advantage, careful consideration should be given to the location, capacity, and pumping schedules of proposed wells and nearby existing wells so that local overdevelopment or excessive interference do not occur.
","language":"English","publisher":"State of Iowa","publisherLocation":"Des Moines, IA","usgsCitation":"Hershey, H., Wahl, K., and Steinhilber, W.L., 1970, Geology and ground-water resources of Cerro Gordo County, Iowa: Water Supply Bulletin 9, iv, 75 p.","productDescription":"iv, 75 p.","numberOfPages":"81","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":351,"text":"Iowa Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":493176,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/unnumbered/70174097/IGS_wsb_9.pdf","text":"Report","size":"7.75 MB","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":324472,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Iowa","county":"Cerro Gordo County","geographicExtents":"{\"type\":\"FeatureCollection\",\"features\":[{\"type\":\"Feature\",\"geometry\":{\"type\":\"Polygon\",\"coordinates\":[[[-93.0242,43.2564],[-93.0245,43.2122],[-93.0242,43.1695],[-93.0241,43.0826],[-93.0241,42.9939],[-93.026,42.9071],[-93.1455,42.9075],[-93.2637,42.9073],[-93.3813,42.9074],[-93.4989,42.9075],[-93.4989,42.9934],[-93.4983,43.0821],[-93.4977,43.1699],[-93.4977,43.2568],[-93.3795,43.2576],[-93.2613,43.2566],[-93.1431,43.2568],[-93.0242,43.2564]]]},\"properties\":{\"name\":\"Cerro Gordo\",\"state\":\"IA\"}}]}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"57724e30e4b07657d1a8197f","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Hershey, H.G.","contributorId":88814,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hershey","given":"H.G.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":640875,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Wahl, K.D.","contributorId":167129,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Wahl","given":"K.D.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":640876,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Steinhilber, W. The purpose of this study was to determine the load of dissolved ions in the reservoir, the changes in chemical quality of the water as a result of initial leaching and subsequent storage, and the effect of the reservoir on the effluent waters. The construction of Flaming Gorge Dam began in 1957, and the reservoir began storing water in November 1962. This report tabulates the chemical-quality data which were collected during the study (1966-68) and summarizes some of the data available prior to closure of the reservoir. An interpretive report will be prepared at a later date. Three sets of data were collected from the reservoir during the study. The sampling locations are shown in figure 1 and the data are listed in tables 1 and 3. At each site in the reservoir, samples were collected at various depths from the surface to the bottom, using a self-closing messenger-actuated sampler. For sites 1-6, the sampling verticals were at the deepest part of the reservoir cross section. For sites 7-12, in the upper reaches of the reservoir, sampling verticals were at three points in the cross section. Samples for complete chemical analysis were collected from sites 1-6 at both the beginning (October 1966) and the end (September 1968) of the data-collection phase of the study. The variation in dissolved ions with depth for these two sets of data are summarized in figure 2. Samples for partial analysis were collected from sites 1 and 6-13 in September 1967, and the partial analyses are included in table 1.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Salt Lake City, UT","usgsCitation":"Madison, R.J., 1970, Water-quality data for the Flaming Gorge Reservoir area, Utah and Wyoming: Utah Basic-Data Release 20, iii, 33 p.","productDescription":"iii, 33 p.","numberOfPages":"40","costCenters":[{"id":610,"text":"Utah Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":345833,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":345832,"rank":1,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://www.waterrights.utah.gov/cgi-bin/docview.exe?Folder=TP21-1-390&Title=Basic+Data+Report+20"}],"country":"United States","state":"Utah","otherGeospatial":"Flaming Gorge Reservoir","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"59bf899de4b091459a5e088d","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Madison, R. The percentages of females increased from 72% of the bloaters samples in 1928-32 to 95% in 1963, and ranged from 94 to 97% in 1964-69. The unusual predominance of females was established at an early age, unquestionably before age III. Bloaters grew faster in southeastern Lake Michigan in 1960-69 than in 1954 and earlier, and were less abundant there in 1966-69 than in 1962-65. The average age of female bloaters from trawls increased from 3.5 years in 1964 to 6.0 years in 1969. The increase in average age followed a heavy drop in fishing intensity and was accompanied by a decline in recruitment. The percentage representation of age-III bloaters, for example, decreased from 62.4% in 1964 to 2.5% in 1969. The changes in biological characteristics of the bloater may partly be symptoms of a fish population that is poorly adjusted to the changing ecology of Lake Michigan.","largerWorkType":{"id":4,"text":"Book"},"largerWorkTitle":"Biology of coregonid fishes","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":4,"text":"Other Government Series"},"language":"English","publisher":"Univ of Manitoba Press","publisherLocation":"Winnipeg, Canada","usgsCitation":"Brown, E.H., 1970, Extreme female predominance in the bloater (Coregonus hoyi) of Lake Michigan in the 1960's, chap. of Biology of coregonid fishes, p. 501-514.","productDescription":"p. 501-514","startPage":"501","endPage":"514","costCenters":[{"id":324,"text":"Great Lakes Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":126954,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a06e4b07f02db5f89b8","contributors":{"editors":[{"text":"Lindsey, C.C.","contributorId":112003,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Lindsey","given":"C.C.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":504058,"contributorType":{"id":2,"text":"Editors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Woods, C.S.","contributorId":111533,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Woods","given":"C.S.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":504057,"contributorType":{"id":2,"text":"Editors"},"rank":2}],"authors":[{"text":"Brown, Edward H.
