The harmonic equations explained at least 80 percent of the variability at 70 of the sites. Standard errors of estimate ranged from 1.3 to 5.4 degrees Celsius and averaged 3.1 degrees Celsius. Stream-temperature characteristics are defined in terms of the mean, amplitude, and phase coefficients of the harmonic equations. The characteristics vary widely throughout the State, hence are described areally by regionalized regression equations. Regional equations developed to describe the mean temperature characteristic accounted for at least 84 percent of the variability and had standard errors of estimate less than 13 percent. Only one equation was adequate for describing the amplitude. That equation was for streams having drainage areas less than 2,500 square miles and in the northwestern part of the State. No equation was developed for the phase coefficient. Stream-temperature characteristic profiles are used to describe the trends of the three characteristics along major streams. These references were compiled by the silica subcommittee of Working Group IV at the 1977 meeting of LAPS in Moscow. The data summarized in these references cover the temperature range of 0° to 900°C at pressures from atmospheric to 1000 mega pascals.</p><p>Preliminary examination of the data suggests that a good correlation of the solubility of silica can be obtained from temperature and log specific volume of water (Fig. 1). The available solubility data (log weight percent silica) tend to lie along smooth curves at constant temperature as a function of log specific volume of water. More than 20 million acre-feet of freshwater is estimated to be in storage in the basin fill of westernmost Texas. About 12 million acre-feet, or more than half, is in El Paso County in the Hueco bolson and Mesilla Valley. In addition, the basins contain about 7 million acre-feet of slightly saline water in basin fill, in Rio Grande alluvium in the Hueco bolson and lower Mesilla Valley, and in the Capitan Limestone in the northern Salt Basin. Ground-water pumping for municipal supply and industrial use in the El Paso area caused water-level declines of as much as 74 feet during 1903-73, and pumping for irrigation in the Salt Basin caused a maximum decline of 150 feet at Lobo Flat during 1949-73. Additional development of ground water in westernmost Texas will be accompanied by further declines in water levels, and will probably induce local migration of slightly saline or poorer quality water into freshwater areas. Land-surface subsidence could occur in local areas where water-level declines are large and the basin fill contains large amounts of compressible clay. The field is a classic example of a stratigraphic trap, where Upper Cretaceous porous sandstone units pinch out on a structural nose. Two-dimensional seismic modeling was used to construct the seismic waveform expressions of the Patrick Draw field, and to better understand how to explore for other 'Patrick Draw' fields. Interpretation of the model shows that the detection of the reservoir sand is very difficult, owing to a combination of acoustic contrasts and bed thickness. Professional Paper 1052, \"A study of Global Sand Seas\", (Fryberger, 1978). These techniques essentially aim at quantifying and standardizing methodology used to analyze different types of wind data. The average annual inflow for the period 1931-76 was about 2.9 million acre-feet; 1.9 million acre-feet from surface sources, about 900,000 acre-feet from direct precipitation, and about 75,000 acre-feet from ground water. The average annual outflow for the same period, all be evaportion, also was about 2.9 million acre-feet. Storage changes are computed on the basis of changes in the surface level of the lake. During the period of historic record, 1847-1978, the lake surface has fluctuated within a range of about 20 feet but has shown little overall change. The lake surface would have been about 5 feet higher in 1978 than it was in 1947 had there been no consumptive use of water caused by man 's activities in the lake basin. Since 1959 the lake has been divided into two parts by a railroad causeway, which has restricted the natural circulation. This has resulted in a difference of salinity and of surface level across the causeway. The difference in surface level between the two parts of the lake varies seasonally and annually and has been as much as 2.35 feet. These deposits were mapped and systematically sampled in 1973 to determine their future potential. The sampling program was facilitated by use of a backhoe which dug 1284 m of trenches and 17 pits. Five hundred and eight samples of surficial material were collected from the trenches and pits, and 78 samples were taken from bedrock exposed in the trenches.</p><p>Panning tests indicate that 710,910 m<sup>3</sup> of gold—bearing material containing an average of 0.102 g/m<sup>3</sup> gold are available; the total gold content is 72,268 g. Of this volume higher grade zones containing 263,455 m<sup>3</sup> of auriferous detritus are available; this material averages 0.262 g/m<sup>3</sup> gold and contains about 69,000 g gold. This gold could be recovered with simple washing and concentrating equipment.</p><p>In addition, a substantial amount of lower grade material which might be workable during times of higher gold prices is available in the district.
