Significant quantities of fresh ground water occur in the basin fill of the northern Hueco bolson and lower Mesilla Valley and in the Wildhorse Flat, Michigan Flat, Lobo Flat, and Ryan Flat areas of the Salt Basin; and may occur in Red Light Draw, Presidio bolson, and Green River valley. More than 20 million acre-feet of freshwater is estimated to be in storage in the basin fill of westernmost Texas. About 12 million acre-feet, or more than half, is in El Paso County in the Hueco bolson and Mesilla Valley. In addition, the basins contain about 7 million acre-feet of slightly saline water in basin fill, in Rio Grande alluvium in the Hueco bolson and lower Mesilla Valley, and in the Capitan Limestone in the northern Salt Basin. Ground-water pumping for municipal supply and industrial use in the El Paso area caused water-level declines of as much as 74 feet during 1903-73, and pumping for irrigation in the Salt Basin caused a maximum decline of 150 feet at Lobo Flat during 1949-73. Additional development of ground water in westernmost Texas will be accompanied by further declines in water levels, and will probably induce local migration of slightly saline or poorer quality water into freshwater areas. Land-surface subsidence could occur in local areas where water-level declines are large and the basin fill contains large amounts of compressible clay. (Kosco-USGS)

The harmonic equations explained at least 80 percent of the variability at 70 of the sites. Standard errors of estimate ranged from 1.3 to 5.4 degrees Celsius and averaged 3.1 degrees Celsius. Stream-temperature characteristics are defined in terms of the mean, amplitude, and phase coefficients of the harmonic equations. The characteristics vary widely throughout the State, hence are described areally by regionalized regression equations. Regional equations developed to describe the mean temperature characteristic accounted for at least 84 percent of the variability and had standard errors of estimate less than 13 percent. Only one equation was adequate for describing the amplitude. That equation was for streams having drainage areas less than 2,500 square miles and in the northwestern part of the State. No equation was developed for the phase coefficient. Stream-temperature characteristic profiles are used to describe the trends of the three characteristics along major streams. All but two of the known kimberlites occur in the Colorado-Wyoming State Line district or in the Iron Mountain, Wyoming, district (fig. 1). A single kimberlite dike is located at Estes Park, Colo., and a small pipe-like body occurs immediately west of Boulder, Colo. (fig. 1). Continuous research for the purpose of locating and characterizing kimberlite in the Front Range has been conducted from 1960 to the present, primarily by M. E. McCallum, D. H. Eggler, and Colorado State University graduate students. The Boulder kimberlite specifically has been studied by Kridelbaugh and others, 1972; Kridelbaugh and Meyer, 1973; Moyer and Kridelbaugh, 1977; and Boctor and Meyer, 1977.
As part of the overall kimberlite project directed by M. E. McCallum, the U.S. Geological Survey has provided the whole-rock minor and trace element analyses reported herein. Although primarily semiquantitative, the analyses show that minor and trace element contents of kimberlites in the Front Range are similar to those of kimberlites elsewhere in the world.

Evaluations were made by reconnaissance techniques and by comparing the study area with other off-road-vehicle sites in California. Major-storm sediment yields for the basin were estimated, using empirical equations developed for the Transverse Ranges and measurements of gully erosion in a representative off-road vehicle basin. Normal major-storm yields of 73,200 cubic yards would have to be increased to about 98,000 cubic yards to account for the existing level of accelerated erosion caused by off-road vehicles. Long-term sediment yield of the Canada de Los Alamos basin upstream from its confluence with Gorman Creek, under present conditions of off-road-vehicle use, is approximately 420 cubic yards per square mile per year--a rate that is considerably lower than a previous estimate of 1,270 cubic yards per square mile per year for the total catchment area above Pyramid Lake.
