Twenty-eight wells, 1.25 inch in diameter, were driven to selected depths in 11 of the 12 trenches to obtain gas and water samples for chemical and radiochemical analysis, water-level measurements for evaluation of trench-cover permeability. Gas from unsaturated refuse above the trench water level was detected in nearly all wells. Rapid water-level response in most wells to pumping of water from trench sumps 20 to 275 feet distant showed the refuse to be highly permeable. Described in detail are the methods and equipment used to (1) install the wells, (2) collect gas and water samples, and (3) monitor radiation and methane concentrations while driving wells into trenches. A record of each well driven into the burial trenches is included. The Bay is open only to the Gulf to the east; the opening is partially blocked by a shallow bank. The bottom sediment distribution in the bay is complex; fine grained material is found in the deep basin, sand and gravel on the shallow bank, and mixtures of sand, gravel and finer sediments nearshore. Richardson current meters were moored l m from the bottom over a one-year period at several locations in the Bay to define the bottom currents and to determine the frequency of bottom sediment movement due to currents. The measurements suggest that the bottom sediments can be expected to move occasionally in certain areas. The maximum bottom current speeds were determined principally by the strong tidal currents in the basin.

In winter, the near bottom currents were dominated by wind stress associated with storms. Bottom currents in the shallow areas were generally in the direction of the wind while currents in the deep portion of the basin were often opposite to the direction of the wind. Sea-surface setup in the direction of the wind was observed, as well as variations in sea level attributed to changes in the adjacent Gulf of Maine. Adjustment of the bottom current to windstress required approximately 12 hours.

Total concentrations of suspended particulate matter, in general, were found to be higher in the near-shore and near-bottom waters and lower in the offshore and near-surface waters. Near-bottom concentrations tended to increase as the grain size of the bottom sediments decreases. Regardless of extent, all are useful for correlation of rock sequences in areas where fossils or age dates are lacking. The purpose of this report is to call attention to the presence, significance, and value for correlation of these unconformities. The Triassic unconformities are designated from oldest to youngest, Tr-1, Tr-2, and Tr-3; the Jurassic ones similarly are designated J-0, J-l, J-2, J-3, J-4, and J-5. Of these, the J-2 surface is the best preserved and most widespread. It extends throughout the Western Interior and truncates the older unconformities in different parts of this area. Consequently, the J-2 surface is discussed and illustrated in much more detail than the others.
Identification of these unconformities throughout large areas where their presence hitherto had been unknown results in some new unexpected correlations and conclusions. Principal among these are: (1) The Red Draw Member of the Jelm Formation of southeastern Wyoming equals the lower part of the Crow Mountain Sandstone of central Wyoming. The Sips Creek Member of the Jelm Formation of southeastern Wyoming equals the upper part of the Crow Mountain Sandstone of central Wyoming and the Gartra Member of the Chinle Formation in the Uinta Mountains of northeastern Utah and northwestern Colorado. The Chinle Formation of the Colorado Plateau and the Uinta Mountains equals the upper part of the Crow Mountain plus the Popo Agie Formation of central Wyoming. (2) The Nugget Sandstone of northern Utah and southwestern Wyoming approximately equals the Glen Canyon Group of the Colorado Plateau. The Temple Cap Sandstone of southwestern Utah equals the Gypsum Spring Formation and the Gypsum Spring Member of the Twin Creek Limestone of Wyoming and the Nesson Formation of Nordquist in the subsurface of the Williston basin. The Sawtooth and Piper Formations at their type sections in Montana and the lower parts of the Twin Creek Limestone (including only the Sliderock, Rich, and Boundary Ridge Members) in western Wyoming and of the Carmel Formation in the Colorado Plateau, at their respective type localities, are equivalent, but none of these correlate with any part of the Gypsum Spring Formation of Wyoming. The Curtis Formation at its type locality in the San Rafael Swell, Utah, equals only the lower part of the Curtis Formation of the Uinta Mountains. The upper part of the Curtis in the Uinta Mountains and the Redwater Shale Member of the Sundance Formation of Wyoming and South Dakota are equivalent.
Estimates of the length of time in millions of years (m.y.) required for uplift and erosion of an unconformity range from less than 1 to as much as 10 m.y.; the average is about 1.8 m.y. if the extremes in time are excluded. The length of time for burial of the surfaces by transgression ranges from less than 1 to about 10 m.y.; the average is less than 1 m.y. if the extremes in time are disregarded.
","largerWorkType":{"id":18,"text":"Report"},"largerWorkTitle":"Unconformities, correlation, and nomenclature of some Triassic and Jurassic rocks, western U.S.","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":5,"text":"USGS Numbered Series"},"language":"English","publisher":"United States Government Printing Office","publisherLocation":"Washington, D. The work was done as a cooperative project between the U.S. Geological Survey, the University of Wisconsin-Extension, Geological and Natural History Survey, and the Southeastern Wisconsin Regional Planning Commission. The accumulation is a phenomenon that probably occurs naturally in the problem reach. Fluctuation in the weather probably is the basic cause of the deposition of fine-grained sediment that has occurred since about 1970. Man's activities and the Hot Creek Fish Hatchery may have contributed to the problem; the significance of these factors, however, probably was magnified because of drought conditions in 1975-77.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr78661","usgsCitation":"Burkham, D., 1978, Sedimentation in Hot Creek in vicinity of Hot Creek Fish Hatchery, Mono County, California: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 78-661, ii, 9 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr78661.","productDescription":"ii, 9 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":413303,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0661/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":140628,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0661/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"California","county":"Mono County","otherGeospatial":"Hot Creek, Hot Creek Fish Hatchery","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -118.87580315166608,\n 37.650709133975326\n ],\n [\n -118.87580315166608,\n 37.612801090088354\n ],\n [\n -118.79037029971082,\n 37.612801090088354\n ],\n [\n -118.79037029971082,\n 37.650709133975326\n ],\n [\n -118.87580315166608,\n 37.650709133975326\n ]\n ]\n ],\n \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n }\n }\n ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a0ae4b07f02db5fbc97","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Burkham, D. Although Weeki Wachee Spring has long been regarded as an obvious source of freshwater supply, long-term diversion of large volumes of water from Weeki Wachee River will cause encroachment of brackish water throughout the residential canals in the lower reach of the river to about 4.4 miles below Weeki Wachee Spring. Weeki Wachee Spring is analogous to a flowering well tapping an artesian aquifer. Flow characteristics of Withlacoochee River and Rainbow Springs indicate that about 600 cubic feet per second is available on a perennial basis, disregarding the downstream requirements for control of saltwater encroachment. The upper glacial aquifer is the sole source of freshwater supply for Shelter Island 's population, which currently ranges seasonally from 2,000 to 8,000. Fresh ground water seems to be limited to sand and gravel deposits in the aquifer, which is thin and can be readily infiltrated by surrounding saline ground water. The aquifer is underlain by confining clay formations that contain saline water, and the geologic formations below the clay probably contain saline water also. The fresh ground water is mostly soft and has low dissolved-solids concentrations; however, several wells near shorelines have yielded excessive amounts of chloride. Man-induced contamination of the aquifer is evident but not severe, as shown by somewhat elevated concentrations of nitrate nitrogen and methylene blue active substances (MBAS). Increased pumping will cause deterioration of the fresh ground-water supply by inducing saline-water infiltration and by adding greater volumes of septic-tank and cesspool effluents to the aquifer. Test drilling could help in water-supply management by determining the extent of the aquifer and of fresh ground-water storage, and observation wells could provide early detection of saline-water infiltration. Water from the Colorado River Aqueduct is presently being recharged to the basin. The dissolved-solids concentration of native ground water in the recharge area is about 210 mg/liter and that of recharge water ranges from 600 to 750 mg/liter. A finite-element model indicates that without recharge the 1974 water levels in the Palm Springs area will decline 200 feet by the year 2000 because of pumpage. If the aquifer is recharged at a rate from about 7 ,500 acre-feet per year in 1973 increasing to 61,200 acre-feet per year in 1990 and thereafter, the water level in the Palm Springs area will decline about 20 feet below the 1974 level by 1991 and recover to the 1974 level by 2000. The solute-transport finite-element model of the recharge area indicates that the artificial recharge plume (bounded by the 300-mg/liter line) will move about 1.1 miles downgradient of the recharge ponds by 1981 and about 4.5 miles from the ponds by 2000.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri7729","usgsCitation":"Swain, L.A., 1978, Predicted water-level and water-quality effects of artificial recharge in the Upper Coachella Valley, California, using a finite-element digital model: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 77-29, vi, 54 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri7729.","productDescription":"vi, 54 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":345749,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1977/0029/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":159269,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1977/0029/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"California","otherGeospatial":"Coachella Valley","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4acce4b07f02db67eb03","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Swain, Lindsay A.","contributorId":7323,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Swain","given":"Lindsay","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":202579,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The study analyzed the probability of spill occurrence, likely paths of the spilled oil, and locations in space and time of recreational and biological resources that are likely to be vulnerable. These results are combined to yield estimates of the overall oilspill risk associated with development of the proposed lease area. The analysis implicitly includes estimates of weathering rates and slick dispersion and an indication of the possible mitigating effects of cleanups. Assuming that economically recoverable amounts of petroleum are found in the area, the leasing of the tracts proposed for sale 49 will increase the expected number of spills by about 20-25 percent over the number expected from the existing (sale 40) leases. The probability that an object such as land will be contacted by a spill is increased by at most five percentage points. The lower one is the artesian Floridan aquifer; the upper is the water-table aquifer. The Floridan aquifer is a thick sequence of limestone and dolomite layers which include several permeable zones that generally are treated as a single hydrologic unit. The top of the Tampa Limestone is considered to be the top of the Floridan in the Temple Terrace area. The public supply wells of the city tap the Tampa Limestone and the underlying Suwannee Limestone, in the upper part of the Floridan. The general direction of ground-water movement in the Floridan aquifer is from north to south, but within the city the direction of movement is from northeast to southwest. The quantity of water moving southwest through a 1.8 mile section of the aquifer is about 2.7 million gallons per day. Ample supplies of water in a cavernous limestone, considered to be the most productive water-yielding zone in the aquifer, are available for additional development from the Floridan aquifer. Water-quality data are included also.
