Lineaments and alignments","docAbstract":"The first stages of a remote-sensing project on the Paradox basin, part of the USGS (U.S. Geological Survey) radioactive waste-emplacement program, consisted of a review and selection of the best available satellite scanner images to use in geomorphologic and tectonic investigations of the region. High-quality Landsat images in several spectral bands (E-2260-17124 and E-5165-17030), taken under low sun angle October 9 and 10, 1975, were processed via computer for planimetric rectification, histogram analysis, linear transformation of radiance values, and edge enhancement. A lineament map of the northern Paradox basin was subsequently compiled at 1:400,000 using the enhanced Landsat base. Numerous previously unmapped northeast-trending lineaments between the Green River and Yellowcat dome; confirmatory detail on the structural control of major segments of the Colorado, Gunnison, and Dolores Rivers; and new evidence for late Phanerozoic reactivation of Precambrian basement structures are among the new contributions to the tectonics of the region. Lineament trends appear to be compatible with the postulated Colorado lineament zone, with geophysical potential-field anomalies, and with a northeast-trending basement fault pattern. Combined Landsat, geologic, and geophysical field evidence for this interpretation includes the sinuousity of the composite Salt Valley anticline, the transection of the Moab-Spanish Valley anticline on its southeastern end by northeast-striking faults, and possible transection (?) of the Moab diapir. Similarly, northeast-trending lineaments in Cottonwood Canyon and elsewhere are interpreted as manifestations of structures associated with northeasterly trends in the magnetic and gravity fields of the La Sal Mountains region. Other long northwesterly lineaments near the western termination of the Ryan Creek fault zone. may be associated with the fault zone separating the Uncompahgre horst uplift from the Paradox basin. \r\n\r\nImplications of the present investigation for a potential radioactive waste-emplacement site in Salt Valley include confirmation of lack of permanent surface drainage and absence of agricultural or other development in the area of northern Salt Valley. On the other hand, the existence of diapirism, salt-karst landforms, and extensive lineamentation of the northern Paradox basin suggest regional tectonic instability at least in the geologic past. Future reactivation of diapiric or other halokinetic processes, including lateral flow, would lead to plastic behavior of the halite that might cause emplaced waste containers to migrate within the diapir. At Salt Valley, existing diapiric boundary faults and intersecting joint sets in sandstone units on the anticlinal flanks could, if the hydraulic gradient is suitable, provide conduits to the halite core for circulating ground water from adjacent Mesozoic sandstones in synclinal areas between the salt diapirs. Moreover, the loci of major lineament intersections might be areas of somewhat elevated seismic risk. Small volumes of tephra were erupted at least four times during the past 10,000 years. Future eruptions like these could cause as much as 35 centimeters of tephra to be deposited at sites 17 kilometers from the volcano, 15 centimeters of tephra to be deposited 29 kilometers from the volcano, and 5 centimeters, 44 kilometers from the volcano. Lava flows were erupted at least twice during the last 10,000 years and moved down two valleys. Future lava flows will not directly endanger people because lava typically moves so slowly that escape is possible. Hot pyroclastic flows evidently occurred during only one period and were confined to the Boulder Creek valley. Such flows can move at speeds of as much as 150 kilometers per hour and can bury valley floors under tens of meters of hot rock debris for at least 15 kilometers from the volcano. large mudflows, most of which contain hydrothermally altered rock debris, originated at Mount Baker at least eight times during the last 10,000 years. The largest mudflow reached 29 kilometers or more down the valley of the Middle Fork Nooksack River, west of the volcano, about 6,000 years ago. Extensive masses of hydrothermally altered rock that are potentially unstable exist today near the summit of the volcano, especially in the Sherman Crater - Sherman Peak area. Avalanches of this material could be triggered by steam explosions, earthquakes, or eruptions, or may occur because of slow-acting forces of processes that gradually decrease stability. large avalanches could move downslope at high speed and could grade downvalley into mudflows. Floods caused by rapid melting of snow and ice by lava or by hot rock debris could affect valley floors many tens of kilometers from the volcano and could have especially severe effects if they were to occur at a time of flooding resulting from rapid snowmelt or heavy rains.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Govt. This core is at present the only continuously cored Cretaceous and Tertiary section on the Northern Neck of Virginia and is one of the few deep cores in the entire Salisbury embayment. The western, northern, and eastern margin</span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW204804430 BCX8\">s of the quadrangle</span> <span class=\"AdvancedProofingIssue SCXW204804430 BCX8\">are located in</span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW204804430 BCX8\">cratered terrains of higher elevation. The great </span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW204804430 BCX8\">H</span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW204804430 BCX8\">ellas </span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW204804430 BCX8\">B</span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW204804430 BCX8\">asin is located to the southwest of the map area, and the central part of the quadrangle</span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW204804430 BCX8\"> contains </span><span class=\"AdvancedProofingIssue SCXW204804430 BCX8\">a number of</span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW204804430 BCX8\"> arcuate scarps, faults, and ridges that appear to be concentric to Hellas</span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW204804430 BCX8\">. The southwestern part of the quadrangle contains patches of old knobby terrain that may be ejecta and structurally </span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW204804430 BCX8\">deformed</span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW204804430 BCX8\"> blocks associated with the formation of Hellas</span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW204804430 BCX8\"> Basin (</span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW204804430 BCX8\">Schaber</span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW204804430 BCX8\">, 1977). Prominent scarps structurally related to the </span><span class=\"SpellingError SCXW204804430 BCX8\">Isidis</span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW204804430 BCX8\"> Basin, located </span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW204804430 BCX8\">immediately north</span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW204804430 BCX8\">west, are </span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW204804430 BCX8\">prominent</span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW204804430 BCX8\"> features in the </span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW204804430 BCX8\">adjacent</span> <span class=\"SpellingError SCXW204804430 BCX8\">Iapygia</span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW204804430 BCX8\"> quadrangle but do not extend</span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW204804430 BCX8\"> into the mapped area. These formations strike east to west and crop out over the north coast of the island. Structurally, the rocks form a simple wedge abutting southward against a mountain chain of volcanic origin and thickening northward to about 1,400 meters by the seashore. All stages of karstification are present: from the incipient, found at the western end of the belt to the residual, found at the eastern end. Maximum development of sinkholes occurs on the Aguada Limestone and upper part of the Aymanom Limestone. These formations have a CaCO<sub>3</sub> content range from about 85 to 95 percent. These data along with similar data from the Sierra Nevada and along the San Andreas fault system permit a reconstruction of basement rocks offset by the Cenozoic lateral faulting along both the San Andreas and Garlock fault systems. \r\n\r\nThe location of the line of initial 87Sr/ 86 Sr = 0.7060 can be related to the edge of the Precambrian continental crust in the western United States. Our model explains the present configuration of the edge of Precambrian continental crust as the result of two stages of rifting that occurred about 1,250 to 800 m.y. ago, during Belt sedimentation, and about 600 to 350 m.y. ago, prior to and during the development of the Cordilleran geosyncline and to left-lateral translation along a locus of disturbance identified in the central Mojave Desert. The variations in Rb, Sr, and initial 87Sr/ 86 Sr of the Mesozoic granitic rocks are interpreted as due to variations in composition and age of the source materials of the granitic rocks. The variations of Rb, Sr, and initial 87Sr/ 86 Sr in Mesozoic granitic rocks, the sedimentation history during the late Precambrian and Paleozoic, and the geographic position of loci of Mesozoic magmatism in the western United States are related to the development of the continental margin and different types of lithosphere during rifting.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Govt. Most of the recharge to the canals is by induced ground-water inflow and seepage. The chemical character of the surface and ground waters in inundated areas is mixed calcium-bicarbonate and sodium-chloride type. Inorganic nitrogen concentrations in surface waters are slightly higher in developed areas than in undeveloped areas. Concentrations of inorganic nitrogen in ground water in drained areas are 2-4 times greater than in undeveloped inundated areas. Average orthophosphate concentrations are uniformly low (0.01 to 0.03 milligrams per liter) throughout the basin. Total residue concentrations are fairly uniform throughout the basin and fluctuate primarily in response to hydrologic conditions. Runoff and load-discharge indices indicated that the loads of inorganic nitrogen, total residue, and phosphorus, and the discharge per unit of land drained were uniform throughout most of the basin. All experiments were conducted during the 1973 and 1974 test seasons. Tables of measured ground-surface elevations, water-surface elevations, and point velocities are included for all experiments. Bed roughness data in the form of grass heights and densities are tabulated. A total of 19 steady flow experiments and 7 unsteady flow experiments for varying grass heights are included. For the steady flow experiments, an average set of water-surface elevations and point velocity measurements are tabulated.&nbsp;</p><p>Inflow discharge hydrographs are tabulated for the unsteady flow experiments. The tabulated point velocities and water-surface elevations for the unsteady flow experiments were selected to represent the general changes in the flow variables as the flood wave passed through the facility but do not include all collected data.
