Faults are identified chiefly by the disruption of mappable layers within sequences of plagioclase and plagioclase-olivine cumulates. Most layers grade from olivine-rich bottoms to plagioclase-rich tops and were probably deposited by density currents. Faults trend principally N35?E, N05?W, and N40?W. The recognition of intense faulting and fracturing in this region and an understanding of the currents responsible for cumulate deposition establish a basic geologic framework with important local and regional implications.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr78385","usgsCitation":"Foose, M.P., and Cooper, R.W., 1978, Preliminary geologic report on the Harris Lake area, northeastern Minnesota: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 78-385, [3], 24 leaves :ill., maps (1 fold. in envelope) ;28 cm.; (27 p., 1 sheet, scale 1:12,000 - PGS), https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr78385.","productDescription":"[3], 24 leaves :ill., maps (1 fold. in envelope) ;28 cm.; (27 p., 1 sheet, scale 1:12,000 - PGS)","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":142653,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0385/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":36444,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0385/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":36445,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0385/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"scale":"2000","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4abde4b07f02db673efe","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Foose, M. Standard identification tests (water content, Atterberg limits, grain size, specific gravity and density) as well as shear strength and compressional testing were conducted either on board the ship or in the laboratory.

The greatest thickness of Holocene sediment occurs in Norton Sound and is located in the Yukon prodelta region. This sediment is predominantly sand-silt that appears to be highly overconsolidated. The observed overconsolidation, in view of the shallow water depths throughout the region, appears to be related to storm wave surges that severely affect the bottom.

Indications of gas-charged sediment have been found in several areas of Norton Sound. Gas-charged sediment has been responsible for failures of structures in other resource development areas and generally will tend to reduce the strength characteristics of the sediment, as a result of generation of high excess pore pressures. The overall stability of the bottom sediment could be seriously affected, particularly if excess pore pressures are generated by storm wave activity in regions of gas-charged sediment. Because of the difficulty experienced with sampling intact gas-charged sediments, in-place testing equipment is considered necessary for future work to more accurately assess the impact and extent of the gas charging.

Several cores that were taken for this study penetrated into peaty muds. The overall extent of the peaty muds and stability characteristics are not well known at this time, but should be assessed in future work with coring devices capable of greater penetration depths.

","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr78408","usgsCitation":"Clukey, E.C., Nelson, H., and Newby, J.E., 1978, Geotechnical properties of northern Bering Sea sediment: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 78-408, 27 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr78408.","productDescription":"27 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":420674,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0408/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":140765,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0408/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Alaska","otherGeospatial":"Bering Sea, Norton Sound area","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -166.6424456319328,\n              64.82221883393899\n            ],\n            [\n              -166.6424456319328,\n              63.03563321304088\n            ],\n            [\n              -160.58099901707294,\n              63.03563321304088\n            ],\n            [\n              -160.58099901707294,\n              64.82221883393899\n            ],\n            [\n              -166.6424456319328,\n              64.82221883393899\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ac7e4b07f02db67b0c6","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Clukey, Edward C.","contributorId":102879,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Clukey","given":"Edward","email":"","middleInitial":"C.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":157511,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Nelson, Hans","contributorId":46942,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Nelson","given":"Hans","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":157509,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Newby, John E.","contributorId":76305,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Newby","given":"John","email":"","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":157510,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

Short-term and seasonal fluctuations in concentrations of these substances were evaluated to determine their relation to nonpoint discharges. Major factors that may cause concentrations of these substances to fluctuate at any particular site are precipitation, lawn fertilizer, dissolved salts in storm runoff, and effluent from septic tanks and cesspools. Chloride concentrations during the study fluctuated by as little as 2 milligrams per liter (mg/liter) at some sites and as much as 300 mg/liter at others. Nitrate and sulfate concentrations showed essentially no change at some sites but fluctuated by as much as 8 and 40 mg/liter, respectively, at others. Short-term fluctuations in the concentrations of these substances in ground water seem to have no consistent correlation with type of land use (suburban or agricultural) or precipitation but seem to be related to seasonal variations in input from specific nonpoint sources. The samples were analyzed for the plant nutrients, nitrogen and phosphorus. In most waters, nitrogen concentrations are less than 2.0 milligrams per liter as nitrogen, and organic nitrogen is dominant. Median total nitrogen concentration for Florida surface waters is between 1.2 and 2.0 milligrams per liter as nitrogen. In samples from 85 percent of the sites, total nitrogen exceeded 0.6 milligrams per liter. Median total phosphorus concentration as phosphorus for Florida surface waters is between 0.05 and 0.1 milligrams per liter. Correlation of crater densities and radiometric ages of Apollo landing sites provide estimates of the absolute age for the units. Results indicate that the far eastern maria were emplaced over a period of approximately 1.25 b.y., from about 3.75 b.y. to 2.5 b.y. before present. Extensive young mare units (~ 2.5 ± 0.5 b.y.) occur in all three large far eastern maria. Major old units (~ 3.65 ± 0.05 b.y.) occur in central Mare Crisium and eastern Mare Marginis. Correlation of the age data and remote sensing data suggests that: (1) both young and old units have relatively high Mg/A1 ratios and are relatively rich in Fe and Ti, whereas intermediate age units have lower Mg/Al ratios and less Fe and Ti. A similar relationship previously noted for other maria suggests that this applied throughout the lunar maria; (2) older units generally have higher remnant magnetism than younger units - a relationship also previously noted for other lunar maria and attributed to a steady decline of a primodial lunar magnetic field, and (3) all age units in the eastern maria have relatively low natural radioactivity or abundances of Th, K, and U compared to the western maria (particularly in the Mare Imbrium area). The presence of young lava flows in both the eastern and western maria suggests that the relative abundance of these radioactive elements has played only a minor role in controlling the duration and location of mare volcanism.

The crater-density relative age data presented here correlate in a linear fashion with crater-morphology relative age data. A combination of these data provides a nearly complete map of the distribution of units of uniform relative age of the lunar maria and shows that, as previously suggested, the older units (> 3.5 b.y. old) are generally located along the basin edges and the younger units (< 3.5 b.y. old) are generally in the basin centers. However, this map also shows that the vents for the flows of the young units must be located on the edges of the basins. These observations support tectonic models of basin subsidence caused by isostatic adjustment to the weight of the lava and to subsurface evacuation and subsequent collapse as the lavas were erupted.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr78879","usgsCitation":"Boyce, J.M., 1978, Ages of flow units in the far eastern lunar maria based on crater density: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 78-879, ii, 55 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr78879.","productDescription":"ii, 55 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":422905,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0879/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":150363,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0879/report-thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ae3e4b07f02db6891f2","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Boyce, Joseph M.","contributorId":52963,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Boyce","given":"Joseph","email":"","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":178749,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Ground water occurs under both artesian and water-table conditions within the basin-fill aquifer and ground-water moverment is toward Grape and Texas Creeks. The depth to the water table is less than 10 feet in an area of about 40 square miles along the central part of the valley and is less than 100 feet in most of the remainder of the valley. Ground water stored in the upper 200 feet of saturated basin-fill sediments is estimated to total 1.5 million acre-feet. Yields greater than 50 gallons per minute generally can be expected from wells in the central part of the basin-fill aquifer, and yields less than 50 gallons per minute are generally reported from wells around the edge of the basin-fill aquifer. Yields of wells in the mountainous areas are generally less than 20 gallons per minute. Most streamflow occurs as a result of snowmelt runoff during June and July. The long-term annual runoff at seven stations ranges from an estimated 0.02 cubic foot per second per square mile to an estimated 1.17 cubic feet per second per square mile, generaly increasing with station altitude. Generalized annyal water budgets for two areas in the Wet Mountain Valley indicate that surface-water outflow is only 7 to 11 percent of the total water supply from precipitation and other sources. The remaining water is lost to the atmosphere by evapotranspiration. The quality of both the surface and ground water is generally within the recommended limits for drinking water set by the U.S. Public Health Service.
