Geochemical studies of the Rolla, Mo., 1° x 2° quadrangle were begun in 1977 as a part of a joint multidisciplinary study of the quadrangle by the U.S. Geological Survey and the Division of Geology and Land Survey, Missouri Department of Natural Resources. The study is to assess the mineral resource potential of the area by integrated geologic, geochemical, and geophysical studies.

crystalline basement rocks (bedrock) of Precambrian ( ) age and unconsolidated deposits of late Pleistocene (Wisconsin) and Holocene ages in Queens County, Lond Island, N.Y. Data collected during a recent study of the hydrogeology of the county and updated records of earlier studies have been used to prepare contour maps that delineate the surfaces of the bedrock and the Upper Cretaceous and pre-Wisconsin Pleistocene deposits. The presence of diabase fragments apparently from the Hudson Palisades in a buried valley through the county suggests that the ancestral Hudson River was diverted into Queens County in Pleistocene time. The contour maps are useful to engineers, ground-water-supply managers, well drillers, and others concerned with subsurface geology in the area. A map showing the apleotopography and geology at the time of the ancestral Hudson River 's entrance into the county is useful in understanding the areal geomorphology. Of the total area included in the topographic drainage basin for the Waccasassa River about 72 percent is in Levy County, 18 percent in Alachua County, 9 percent in Gilchrist County, and 1 percent in Marion County. The elongated north-south drainage basin is approximately 50 mi in length, averages 13 mi in width, and lies between the Suwannee River, the St. Johns River, and the Withlacoochee River basins. The area lies within the Coronado National Forest and forms a belt around the north, east, and south sides of the Saguaro National Monument (fig. 1). A mineral resource survey was made of the area in 1977 by the U.S. Geological Survey and the U.S. Bureau of Mines. This study indicates that the potential for finding metallic or nonmetallic mineral deposits, petroleum or coal or geothermal energy in the study area is low. This appraisal is based on geologic and geochemical investigations and on examination of all mineralized prospects. A geologic map was made of the area and its immediate surrounding. Chemical and spectrographic analyses were made of 1.30 stream-sediment samples and of 143 rock samples. The locations of mining claims were compiled and samples from most of the claims were assayed. There has been no recorded mineral production from within the study area.
The geology of the Rincon Mountains is structurally complex. The core of the Rincon Mountains, lying mainly within the Saguaro National Monument, is underlain by igneous and metamorphic rocks chiefly of Precambrian and Tertiary ages. The study area lies on the flanks of the mountains in a terrain of sedimentary, metamorphic, and igneous rocks mainly of Precambrian through mid-Tertiary age. The rocks of this area are cut by many faults, with low-angle or bedding-parallel faults abundant. the distribution of these faulted rocks around the flanks of the Rincon Mountains is the result of a doming in the core area, the sliding of rock masses from the high part of the dome down its flanks, and to the effects of erosion.
The potential for economic metallic mineral deposits is considered low because the known areas of anomalous concentrations of metals are small and the concentration of metals weak and erratic. The surface signs of mineralization are largely restricted to 4 locales in which some prospects exist (fig. 1): (1) east of Colossal Cave, southwest or the Rincon Mountains, (2) north of Happy Valley, east of the mountains, (3) between Roble and Youtcy Canyons, northeast of the mountains, and (4) near Italian Trap north of the mountains. Very little primary sulfide mineralization is present and signs of alteration are restricted to narrow zones along faults and fractures. The geochemical anomalies are weak. The sites at which anomalous values of copper, molybdenum, or silver were obtained are mainly controlled by faults.
Nonmetallic mineral resources occur in deposits that are too small and too remote to be economically attractive. Sand and gravel deposits in the main drainages are similar to larger deposits that occur closer to nearby highways and cities. Limestone and marble present in some of the metamorphic rocks are too impure and too broken for use as dimension stone. Use of this marble as decorative rock is limited by remote markets. Limestone suitable for making cement is not likely to be found in large quantities within the Rincon wilderness study area. Closely spaced fractures in the granitic rocks makes them of little value for building stone.

P. Lee (April 25 - May 11, 1978) seven sonobuoy profiles and 200 km of 24-channel seismic reflection data were recorded in the outer southern California Continental Borderland. These data were obtained, at the request of the Deep Sea Drilling Project (DSDP), to evaluate possible drill sites along the southern California continental margin.
The drill sites shown in Figure 1 were proposed by the Ocean Paleo-environmental Panel for DSDP Leg 63--secheduled for Sept. - Nov. 1978. These sites were selected in order to provide an expanded Neogene record of paleoceanographic-paleoclimatic events and associated evolutionary development of planktic communities along the eastern side of the north Pacific Ocean. Site selection was made prior to this survey on the basis of available single-channel seismic reflection profiles. Thus, the proposed sites shown on Fig. 1 may be relocated or eliminated when the data presented in this report are incorporated with earlier data. The combined data will be evaluated for safety and pollution hazards by Leg 63 site proponents and the DSDP safety panels.
The ship's tracks (Fig. 1) were located by an integrated Satellite-Loran C-Doppler Sonar navigation system. Average survey speed was about 5 kts. A 1326 cu in (21,723 CC) tuned air gun array provided the sound source for both reflection and refraction profiles. The air gun array was fired at 50 m (about 18 sec.) intervals by the integrated navigation system.

The method was developed by multiple-regression techniques. The State is divided into two regions and sets of equations for calculating peak discharges based on physical basin characteristics are provided for each region. The boundary between regions generally corresponds with the division between the Piedmont and Coastal Plain provinces. In the northern region, flood-peak discharges were related to basin drainage area and storage. In the southern region, flood peaks were related to drainage area, slope, storage, forest cover, and two composite soil categories. Standard errors of estimate for the regression equations in the northern region ranged from 30 to 39 percent. For the southern region, the standard errors of estimate varied from 38 to 40 percent. Without using the two soil parameters in the southern region, the standard errors of estimate varied from 57 to 70 percent. Annual flood peaks, basin characteristics, and flood-frequency distributions are tabulated for the 60-gaged sites used in the regression analysis. At 23 of these sites, a rainfall-runoff model generated additional flood-peak data which were used in defining the flood-frequency distributions. These cross section data can be used in Flood Insurance Administration studies and in other studies related to the planning, development, and management of flood plains. The data were collected by the Caribbean District of the Water Resources Division of the U.S. Geological Survey in cooperation with the Puerto Rico Department of Natural Resources.

Stage and discharge data were collected during 1973-77 at 6 recording and 45 crest-stage gages within the basin and combined with discharge records on the main channel of the Sacramento River to determine total flow and flow distribution at the latitudes of Ord Ferry, Butte City, and Gridley Road. Water-surface profiles throughout the basin, inflow/change-in-storage/outflow relations of the Butte Sink, and channel changes of the Sacramento River are shown. During 1973-77, total peak flows decreased an average of 7 percent between the latitudes of Ord Ferry and Butte City, with measured peaks from 100,000 to 200,000 cfs (cubic feet per second). The largest floodflow measured was 195,000 cfs on January 17, 1974, at the latitude of Ord Ferry. For a given flood, overland flow did not change significantly in peak magnitude between Afton Boulevard, Butte City, and Gridley road. Overland flows of about 45,000 and about 24,000 cfs were measured on January 18 and April 1, 1974, respectively. Concentrations in the milligram-per-liter range were determined by injecting an aqueous sample into the analysis system through an injection port, trapping the organics on Tenax-GC at room temperature, and thermally desorbing the organics into a gas chromatograph with a flame ionization detector for analysis. Concentrations in the microgram-per-liter range were determined by sweeping the headspace vapors over a water sample at 50C, trapping on Tenax-GC, and thermally desorbing the organics into the gas chromatograph. The precision for two operators of the milligram-per-liter concentration procedure, expressed as the coefficient of variation, was generally less than 2 percent for concentrations ranging from 16 to 160 milligrams per liter. The precision from two operators of the microgram-per-liter concentration procedure was between 2 and 4 percent for concentrations of 20 and 60 micrograms per liter. The map shows the altitude of the water table in increments of 20 feet. Sampling from November 1973 through July 1974 was done at five stations in the Zayante Creek drainage basin and at one station on the San Lorenzo River at Big Trees. Sampling from August 1974 through June 1975 was done at 15 stations in the San Lorenzo River basin, including one station in the Zayante Creek subbasin. Properties and constituents measured were water temperature, specific conductance, pH, alkalinity, dissolved oxygen, turbidity, fecal-coliform and fecal-streptococcal bacteria, major dissolved ions, nutrients (nitrogen and phosphorus), chemical and biochemical oxygen demand, and trace elements. Benthic invertebrates were collected during autumn 1974 and spring 1975 at two stations.
Results show that the water in most streams in the basin can be classified as calcium bicarbonate, but based on the dissolved-ion concentrations the basin can be divided into three water-quality areas that correspond generally to three geologic areas. The most pronounced change in water quality occurs during storms when streamflow, turbidity, and total Kjeldahl-nitrogen, total-phosphorus, dissolved-potassium, and fecal-coliform concentrations increase, while concentrations of most dissolved ions decrease owing to dilution of the nonstorm part of the flow. Late winter and early spring nonstorm flows yield water of the best quality because the concentrations of most dissolved ions and fecal-coliform and fecal-streptococcal bacteria are relatively low, whereas turbidity values are the same as, or not appreciably greater than, during the summer low-flow period.
Dissolved-ion concentrations exceeded objectives at stations on east-side streams north of the Zayante fault, probably because of lower-than-normal streamflows during water year 1975. Total-nitrogen and fecal-coliform concentrations exceeded objectives in the Zayante Creek and Branciforte Creek drainage basins, probably because of domestic sewage from improperly operating septic-tank systems. The high total-nitrogen and fecal-coliform concentrations in the Zayante Creek basin might also result from the primary-treated effluent discharged by the city of Scotts Valley into an old sand pit.
Results of diel studies (intensive sampling for a 24-hour period) made at two stations on the San Lorenzo River indicate that residential areas between the stations do not contribute sufficient quantities of oxygen-demanding wastes to the river during low streamflow to cause appreciable dissolved-oxygen depletion. Greater streamflows and residential development seem to be responsible for unstable streambed substrates and reduced diversity of benthic invertebrates during the spring at a station downstream of most of the residential areas in the San Lorenzo River valley.

A 4,000 km2 area centered on metropolitan Portland was chosen as the demonstration site, and a four-date Landsat temporal overlay was created which contained January, April, July, and October data collected in 1973. Digital multispectral analysis of single dates and two-date combinations revealed that the spring-summer and summer-fall combinations were the most satisfactory for land cover inventory. Residential, commercial and industrial, improved open space, water, forested, and agriculture land cover categories were obtained consistently in the majority of classification iterations.
