This report summarizes the contract research program in support of the Geological Survey's Outer Continental Shelf oil and gas operations. The program is technological, though certain environmental investigations are being conducted as a necessary adjunct. The program manager provides a focal point for communicating with the research community in both the university system and private industry as well as with Federal agencies. Interaction is needed not only with. other Government agencies, such as the Bureau of Land Management and the Department of Energy, but within the Geological Survey itself. USGS engineers and scientists are in a unique position to contribute to the success of the program by their specialized knowledge and experience in the many aspects of offshore operations such as marine geology, seismology and petroleum engineering.
This document describes the program and reports on the research, development, and evaluation which are being undertaken.

These formations strike east to west and crop out over the north coast of the island. Structurally, the rocks form a simple wedge abutting southward against a mountain chain of volcanic origin and thickening northward to about 1,400 meters by the seashore. All stages of karstification are present: from the incipient, found at the western end of the belt to the residual, found at the eastern end. Maximum development of sinkholes occurs on the Aguada Limestone and upper part of the Aymanom Limestone. These formations have a CaCO3 content range from about 85 to 95 percent. The denudation rate of the Limestone belt through solution is computed as 0.70 mm per year with some evidence that abrasion may increase the denudation rate locally by as much as 40 percent.

Many of the coal beds are less than 250 feet (76.2 m) below land surface and are, therefore, mineable by surface methods. Individual cola beds are commonly 20-30 feet (6.1-9.1 m) thick, but may be as much as 80 feet (24 m). These factors, coupled with the low-sulfur content of the coal, make it attractive as a major energy resource.

These shales are composed predominately of 2M illite and illitic mixed-layer clay with minor amounts of chlorite and kaolinite. Preliminary data indicate that kaolinite, the only allogenic clay mineral, is present in successively older beds of the Ohio Shale from south to north in the southern and middle parts of the Appalachian basin. This trend in the distribution of kaolinite shows a paleocurrent direction to the southwest. Three well-known methods of preparing the clay fraction for X-ray diffraction analysis were tested and evaluated. Kaolinite was not identified in two of the methods because of layering due to differing settling rates of the clay minerals. A preliminary model for the origin of the veins envisages deposition in near-surface fractures above an unexposed pluton that may host a porphyry-type ore deposit. This model is based on the work in progress by the U.S. Geological Survey, and embodies all presently available data from field mapping, literature study, fluid inclusion studies, and diverse geochemical and isotopic studies. Recent advances in uranium geochemistry have been particularly helpful. The work is not yet complete so this model should be considered as a progress report suggesting possible targets for exploration and testing; such testing would in turn lead to refinements in the model and to a clearer understanding of vein-type uranium deposits in general.

The unconfined aquifer beneath dunes on the barrier islands is estimated to yield as much as 30 gallons per minute of freshwater to a horizontal well, but this aquifer is subject to periodic overwash by the ocean, thus temporarily contaminating the aquifer with saltwater. The upper confined aquifer is about 90 to 150 feet deep, but is known to contain freshwater only in the Drum Inlet area. The potential yield of this aquifer where it is fresh is unknown because of the possibility of saltwater encroachment. The lower limestone aquifer (150 to 550 feet deep) contains freshwater southeast of Drum Inlet; potential yields is estimated to be as great as 500 gallons per minute per well. The estimated yields from all aquifers depend on the position of the saltwater interface at any given site. This map shows the changes that have occurred in the location of the main channel of the river from 1936 to 1974. The map indicated that certain reaches of the river are subject to different rates of channel migration. Also shown is the boundary of the flood plain, which is mapped at the point of abrupt break in slope. This map documents the position of the river channel prior to any withdrawals of water or alteration of the flow characteristics of the white river that may occur in order to meet water requirements principally associated with the proposed oil-shale industry or other development in the area.
The channel locations were determined from aerial photographs taken at four different time periods for the following Federal agencies: In 1936, U.S. Soil Conservation Services; 1953, U.S. Corps of Engineers; 1965, U.S. Geological Survey; and in 1974, U.S. Bureau of Land Management. The 1936 delineation, which is actually based upon photographs that were taken in 1936 and 1937, was made by projection of the original photographs on a base map that was prepared from 1:24,000 scale topographic maps. The 1953, 1965, and 1974 delineations were produced from stereographic models. The 1965 delineation was compiled from photographs that were taken during 1962-65. The delineation is labeled as 1965 for simplicity, however, because the photographs for 1965 cover about 60 percent of the study read of the river, and because no changed were discernable in those areas of repetitive photographic coverage.

The accumulation is a phenomenon that probably occurs naturally in the problem reach. Fluctuation in the weather probably is the basic cause of the deposition of fine-grained sediment that has occurred since about 1970. Man's activities and the Hot Creek Fish Hatchery may have contributed to the problem; the significance of these factors, however, probably was magnified because of drought conditions in 1975-77.

Stormy weather interrupted the planned data collection, during which time supplemental profiles and samples were collected in Prince William Sound including Montague Strait, Valdez Arm, Port Valdez, and Columbia Bay (Fig. 1). High resolution seismic profile records were made using a 600 Joule Del Norte Minisparker along 1151 km of track lines as shown on maps 1 and 2. Sediment samples collected with grab samplers (58) and gravity core (3) and bottom camera stations (14) are also shown on the track line maps and on figures 2 and 3.
This report indicates the seismic reflection records and shipboard logs that are publicly available and includes track line maps and a text that; (1) shows examples of characteristic seismic profiles, (2) describes geologic hazards observed on specific profiles, and (3) includes summary descriptions of sediment samples and bottom photographs.

The upper glacial aquifer is the sole source of freshwater supply for Shelter Island 's population, which currently ranges seasonally from 2,000 to 8,000. Fresh ground water seems to be limited to sand and gravel deposits in the aquifer, which is thin and can be readily infiltrated by surrounding saline ground water. The aquifer is underlain by confining clay formations that contain saline water, and the geologic formations below the clay probably contain saline water also. The fresh ground water is mostly soft and has low dissolved-solids concentrations; however, several wells near shorelines have yielded excessive amounts of chloride. Man-induced contamination of the aquifer is evident but not severe, as shown by somewhat elevated concentrations of nitrate nitrogen and methylene blue active substances (MBAS). Increased pumping will cause deterioration of the fresh ground-water supply by inducing saline-water infiltration and by adding greater volumes of septic-tank and cesspool effluents to the aquifer. Test drilling could help in water-supply management by determining the extent of the aquifer and of fresh ground-water storage, and observation wells could provide early detection of saline-water infiltration.
