It depicts the geology of the crater Alphonsus (in which Ranger IX impacted) and environs. The primary objective of the mapping was to apply extant lunar mapping techniques used on relatively </span><span class=\"ContextualSpellingAndGrammarError SCXW59999549 BCX8\">small scale</span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW59999549 BCX8\"> telescopic photographs to the larger scale Ranger photographs, in preparation for extensive analysis of Lunar Orbiter photography in support of the Apollo program. An additional objective was to shed more light on the formation of Alphonsus and its associated features. The map outlines rock units that are inferred from surface features and characteristics, such as topography and albedo. Each rock unit is assigned an age and arranged in the explanation so that the youngest unit are at the top and the oldest at the bottom. The age classification is based on the early work </span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW59999549 BCX8\">of Shoemaker and Hackman (1962), and subsequent revisions reported by McCauley (1967) and </span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW59999549 BCX8\">Wilhelms</span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW59999549 BCX8\"> (1966). Geology of the region has been mapped at a scale of 1:1,000,000 </span><span class=\"AdvancedProofingIssue SCXW59999549 BCX8\">on the basis of</span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW59999549 BCX8\"> Earth-based photographs and observations (Howard and </span><span class=\"SpellingError SCXW59999549 BCX8\">Masursky</span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW59999549 BCX8\">, 1968). Terra materials occur only in the northeast corner of the region. Dark mare covers the remainder, and the entire region is crossed by rays from Kepler. No two sites are identical; the geology of each should be considered in the interpretation of returned lunar samples and observations. Geologic maps of each site have been prepared at scales of 1:5,000, 1:25,000, and 1:100,000.</p><p>Features emphasized on the 1:5,000-scale maps are common to all the sites and include mainly the widespread lunar regolith and small craters of varied age and origin. Because they cover the lunar surface and because mobility will be limited on early missions, these ubiquitous features will be the main objects of scientific inquiry during the first manned landings.</p><p>Regional geologic differences among the sites are more apparent on the 1:25,000- and 1:100,000-scale maps. Mare materials in sites 2 and 3 belong mainly to the Imbrian System; the materials in site 3 appear to be younger than those in site 2. Mare materials in sites 4 and 5 belong entirely to the Eratosthenian System. Most materials in site 1 have been assigned to the Copernican System. They consist of a young mantle of relatively low-cohesion material that covers an older cratered terrain, probably part of the terrae. Typical mare material occurs only in the eastern extremity of site 1.
