Flood hydrographs developed from streamflow records in the area also reflect the two events, with the second yielding the greater runoff.</p><p>Peak discharges were determined during and after flood at gaging stations and selected miscellaneous locations. A large zone of active fissures is located near Picacho, Arizona on the eastern rim of a large subsidence bowl. The main fissure has been named the Picacho fault. During February and March 1977, approximately 6.5 km of seismic-refraction lines were run across the Picacho fault to investigate subsurface conditions down to the crystalline basement. In addition, two lines of close-spaced gravity stations were made across the fault. The gross geologic features inferred from the gravity data agree with the seismic interpretations.\r\n\r\nSix layers were interpreted from the seismic refraction data: three layers of unconsolidated alluvium, two of denser rock of varying porosity, and the basement rock. Three significant basement faults were identified. These faults appear to lie almost directly beneath the surface fissures. Abrupt slope changes in the alluvial layers and an abrupt velocity change in the denser compacted sediments seem to be related spatially to the surface fissures. In addition there are lateral velocity differences within the basement fault blocks.\r\n\r\nIn the overlying sediments a facies change in a 3.0 km/sec layer is suggested by the abrupt lateral velocity increase from 3.0 km/sec to 3.7 km/sec. This apparent facies change may in fact represent a fault plane extending upwards from the westernmost basement fault. Rainfall and runoff data, collected for 9 years on a seasonal basis (April through September), were used to calibrate a rainfall-runoff model on each of 22 small basins. Long-term records of runoff volume and peak discharge were synthesized for these 22 basins. \r\n\r\nFlood volumes and flood peaks of specific recurrence intervals (2, 5, 10, 25, 50, and 100 years) were then related to basin characteristics with a high degree of correlation. Flood volumes were related to drainage area, maximum relief, and basin slope. Flood peaks were related to drainage area, maximum relief, basin slope, and channel slope. An investigation of ponding behind a highway embankment, with available storage capacity and with a culvert to allow outflow, has shown that the single fast-rising peak is most important in culvert design. Consequently, a dimensionless hydrograph defines the characteristic shape of flood hydrographs to be expected from small drainage basins in Wyoming. For design purposes, a peak and volume can be estimated from basin characteristics and used with the dimensionless hydrograph to produce a synthetic single-peak hydrograph. Data were collected for nitrogen, phosphorus, carbon, and fecal coliform and fecal streptococcal bacteria.<br></p><p>Results of the restricted sampling indicate that nutrient recycling within the lake is sufficient to support the periodic luxurient growth of algae and aquatic weeds. Inflows are not contributing high concentrations of nutrients to the ecosystem. Such an array of relatively closely spaced seismometers has already been installed in El Centro and provided useful information for both engineering and seismological applications from the 1979 Imperial Valley earthquake. Differential ground motions, principally due to horizontally propagating surface waves, are important in determining the stresses in such extended structures as large mat foundations for nuclear power stations, dams, bridges and pipelines.
