The Marine Corps Base, Twentynine Palms, Calif., pumped 2,600 acre-feet of water in 1975 from five supply wells in the Surprise Spring subbasin. The water levels in those wells declined an average of 35 feet in the preceding 10 years. This decline is a result of (1) the proximity of Surprise Spring fault, a ground-water barrier; (2) the close spacing of wells; and (3) the large volume of water extracted.
At the present rate of water-level decline, the pumping water levels will be below the pump intakes by 1980. The projected water demand for the base will increase to 3,000 acre-feet per year by 1980.
To help evaluate the geohydrologic properties of Surprise Spring subbasin, three test holes were drilled northwest of the present well field. That area shows promise of being a good location for drilling three new supply wells. The addition of these new wells to the water supply will reduce the pumping stress from the existing supply wells and reduce the rate of decline.
With an estimated 600,000 acre-feet of ground water remaining in storage after 22 years of pumping and with a projected water demand of 3,000 acre-feet per year, Surprise Spring subbasin, if properly developed, could supply the base for many years to come.

Samples of the minerals forming on the surface of the bank, the gases escaping from vents, and the water and sediment from a nearby stream were analyzed to determine the presence of these elements.
The output of trace elements from the Mather bank, as is evidenced by the minerals forming on the surface, is relatively low compared to the output from actively burning anthracite culm-banks.
Copper was the only element of potential environmental significance found accumulating on the Mather bank. However, the sediment in the vicinity of the bank and the waters immediately downstream did not have anomolously high concentrations of copper.
Relatively high concentrations of arsenic were found in the organic matter at the base of the bank but no evidence of high As values were found downstream.
No potentially toxic elements, other than sulfur, were detected in the gases being emitted from the culm-bank.
Because of the quiescent condition of the Mather culm-bank the question of the fate of trace elements released in the burning process remains unanswered.

These detailed investigations were requested and funded by the Bureau of Land Management to carry out its responsibility under the Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) Lands Act (67 Stat 462) of 1953 and the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969. Because of the energy crisis, these studies had to be mounted quickly so that a substantial body of data would be available for making decisions concerning environmental constraints on potential lease tracts. Indeed, pertinent data were available prior to Lease Sale #40 in the Middle Atlantic in August 1976. This was in part due to the alacrity of BLM's Environmental Division management, and in part due to the depth of USGS' experience in the area. For example, geophysical data and bottom samples had been collected since 1962 as part of the Geological Survey's role to \"conduct geological and geophysical exploration in the Outer Continental Shelf\" (43 U.S.C. 1340). At the advent of the energy crisis, the Atlantic-Gulf Coast Branch focused in-house resources and environmental assessment efforts on the Middle Atlantic OCS area. Thus, considerable information was available to guide the needed detailed studies.

Stratified sediments were divided texturally into three zones: the upper zone (0-128 m) contains mostly coarse sand and gravel; the middle zone (128-349 m) contains mostly silty clay and a few beds of sand and silt; and the lower zone (349-457 m) contains soft, unconsolidated, clayey sand. Below the lower zone, a saprolite, composed mostly of clay, grades abruptly downward at 470 m into partially altered basalt that extends to the bottom of the hole at 514 m. Calculations based on the Ghyben-Herzberg principle predicted a zone of freshwater 120-150 m thick. This principle is the theory of hydrostatic equilibrium between freshwater and more dense seawater in a coastal aquifer; it states that for each meter of ground-water elevation above sea level, the freshwater lens will depress the saltwater interface about 40 m below sea level. Freshwater or low-salinity brackish water was found in sediments far below the depth predicted by the Ghyben-Herzberg principle. These interstitial waters are probably relict ground water emplaced during times of low sea level during the Pleistocene.
