In addition, pesticide and metal content of residue on stream-bottom sediments from several major streams in the county were analysed. \r\n\r\nWaters from the streams in Fairfax County have generally good chemical quality during low flow. One stream in Vienna, Virginia has a high sodium chloride content, suggesting an upstream discharge of salty water. Higher concentrations of dissolved, solids reflect both the effects of geology and urbanization. Streams draining Triassic rocks in the western section of the county are characterized by the greatest natural concentration of dissolved minerals in the water. \r\n\r\nThe concentrations of pesticide and metal residue associated with bottom sediments suggest a low level of pollution in the streams. One site in western Fairfax County contained above-normal levels of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB's) in the stream sediments.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr78719","usgsCitation":"Larson, J.D., 1978, Chemical composition of streams during low flow; Fairfax County, Virginia: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 78-719, 31 p., 1 leaf of plates :ill., maps (1 fold.) ;27 cm. --, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr78719.","productDescription":"31 p., 1 leaf of plates :ill., maps (1 fold.) ;27 cm. --","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":142403,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0719/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":37761,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0719/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":37762,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0719/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49e0e4b07f02db5e3fb8","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Larson, J. The use of General Electric's worldwide information-services network provides access to the CRIB file to a worldwide clientele. This manual, which consists of two chapters, is intended as a guide to users who wish to interrogate the file. Chapter A contains a description of the CRIB file, information on the use of the GIPSY retrieval system, and a description of the General Electric MARK III Service. Chapter B contains a description of the individual data items in the CRIB record as well as code lists. \r\n\r\nCRIB consists of a set of variable-length records on the metallic and nonmetallic mineral resources of the United States and other countries. At present, 31,645 records in the master file are being made available. The record contains information on mineral deposits and mineral commodities. Some topics covered are: deposit name, location, commodity information, description of deposit, geology, production, reserves, potential resources, and references. \r\n\r\nThe data are processed by the GIPSY program, which maintains the data file and builds, updates, searches, and prints the records using simple yet versatile command statements. Searching and selecting records is accomplished by specifying the presence, absence, or content of any element of information in the record; these specifications can be logically linked to prepare sophisticated search strategies. Output is available in the form of the complete record, a listing of selected parts of the record, or fixed-field tabulations. \r\n\r\nThe General Electric MARK III Service is a computerized information services network operating internationally by land lines, satellites, and undersea cables. The service is available by local telephone to 500 cities in North America, Western Europe, Australia, Southeast Asia, Japan, and Saudi Arabia. An interface called the 'foreground driver' is used to link the GIPSY program to the General Electric system.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"Dept. of the Interior, Geological Survey ;\r\ndistributed by Branch of Distribution, U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/cir755B","usgsCitation":"Keefer, E., and Calkins, J.A., 1978, Description of individual data items and codes in CRIB: U.S. Geological Survey Circular 755, iii, p B1-B32; ill. ;26 cm. , https://doi.org/10.3133/cir755B.","productDescription":"iii, p B1-B32; ill. ;26 cm. The study area comprises (1) about 9 square miles of reservation land, plus adjacent areas, on and bordering the floor of Quinn River valley near McDermitt, Nev., and (2) the uninhabited 5.6-square-mile Hog John Ranch (also part of the reservation) and adjacent areas along the boundary between Kings River and Desert Valley, about 35 miles southwest of McDermitt. \r\n\r\nIn both areas, the valley-fill reservoir forms the principal source of ground water. The reservoir is at least 1,225 feet deep at one site near McDermitt. Volcanic rocks also form an important source of ground water for several wells near McDermitt. A 12-inch diameter, 720-foot test well drilled on the reservation near McDermitt produced 360 gallons per minute with a drawdown of 149 feet (specific capacity, 2.4 gallons per minute per foot of drawdown). A transmissivity of 640 feet squared per day for this well was obtained from a 44-hour pumping test. Transmissivities for 6 Other wells in the McDermitt area ranged from 710 to 11,000 feet squared per day. In this area, water levels ranging from 3 to 250 feet below land surface have remained almost the same as those of 1964. Depth to water generally increases away from the valley lowlands. \r\n\r\nThe valley-fill reservoir in the Hog John Ranch area is at least 350 feet deep. Depth to water in the vicinity of the Ranch ranges from 0.25 to 48 feet, with deeper water levels generally found at higher land elevations. Net change in these water levels has been negligible for a period of nearly 30 years. Two adjacent test wells at the Ranch were augered to depths of 33 and 90 feet during this study, and completed with well-bottom screens. Differing water levels in the two wells indicate a minimum upward hydraulic gradient of about 0.07 foot per foot in the zone penetrated by the holes. \r\n\r\nWater quality in the McDermitt area is generally suitable for most uses. In the Ranch area, water salinity appears to decrease with increasing well depth, and is generally suitable for irrigation at depths exceeding 50 feet. \r\n\r\nThe East Fork Quinn River, which flows directly through the inhabited part of the reservation, has an average runoff of about 20,000 acre-feet per year at the gage 7 miles east of McDermitt. Streamflow from Quinn River, Kings River, and Desert Valleys passes intermittently through the Ranch by way of the Quinn River, but the quantity of flow is not known.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr78139","usgsCitation":"Arteaga, F.E., 1978, Appraisal of water resources in the Fort McDermitt Indian Reservation, Humboldt County, Nevada: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 78-139, vi, 64 p., 4 sheets, :ill., maps (some fold. in envelope) ;28 cm. --, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr78139.","productDescription":"vi, 64 p., 4 sheets, :ill., maps (some fold. in envelope) ;28 cm. --","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":142092,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0139/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":35221,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0139/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":35222,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0139/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":35223,"rank":402,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0139/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":35224,"rank":403,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0139/plate-4.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":35225,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0139/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ac6e4b07f02db67a2f3","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Arteaga, Freddy E.","contributorId":73601,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Arteaga","given":"Freddy","email":"","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":156542,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

There are two programs. One is for plane strain motions, that is, motions in the plane perpendicular to the long axis of the structure, and the other is for antiplane strain motions, that is motions parallel to the axis. The seismic input is provided by specifying what the motion of the rock-soil boundary would be if the soil were absent and the boundary were a free surface. This may be done by supplying a magnetic tape containing the values of particle velocity for every boundary point at every instant of time. Alternatively, a punch card deck may be supplied giving acceleration values at every instant of time. In the plane strain program it is assumed that the acceleration values apply simultaneously to every point on the boundary; in the antiplane strain program it is assumed that the acceleration values characterize a plane shear wave propagating upward in the underlying elastic medium at a specified angle with the vertical. The nonlinear hysteretic behavior of the soil is represented by a three-dimensional rheological model. A boundary condition is used which takes account of finite rigidity in the elastic substratum. The computations are performed by an explicit finite-difference scheme that proceeds step by step in space and time. Computations are done in terms of stress departures from an unspecified initial state. Source listings are provided here along with instructions for preparing the input. A more detailed discussion of the method is presented elsewhere.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr78287","usgsCitation":"Joyner, W.B., 1978, FORTRAN programs for calculating nonlinear seismic ground response in two dimensions: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 78-287, 69 leaves :ill. ;28 cm.; (73 p. - PGS), https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr78287.","productDescription":"69 leaves :ill. ;28 cm.; (73 p. - PGS)","costCenters":[{"id":237,"text":"Earthquake Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":379,"text":"Menlo Park Science Center","active":false,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":126475,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/ofr_78_287.gif"},{"id":111002,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0287/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a06e4b07f02db5f88d6","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Joyner, W. Several physical parameters, which can be readily determined in the field, were found to correlate with the shear wave velocities and were used to define seismically distinct groups. For the unconsolidated to semiconsolidated sediments, texture, standard penetration resistance and depth were used to define eight seismically distinct groups. For the bedrock materials, fracture spacing and hardness were used to differentiate ten distinct categories. \r\n\r\nThe correlation obtained between shear wave velocity and the physical parameters were used to regroup the map units defined for the San Francisco Bay region into seismically distinct units. The map units for the younger unconsolidated sediments can be really differentiated seismically. In contrast, the older semiconsolidated sedimentary deposits and bedrock units, which have experienced significant variations in post-depositial changes, show wider and overlapping velocity ranges. The map units for the sedimentary deposits have been regrouped into eight seismically distinct geotechnical units. The bedrock map units have been broadly regrouped into five distinct categories. \r\n\r\nCompressional wave velocities were not found to be well correlated with the physical parameters dependent on the soil or rock structure. For materials above the water table, the wide velocity variations found for each geotechnical group can be attributed to differences in degree of saturation. The strong correlations observed between shear wave velocity and other readily determine physical properties suggest that geologic maps which incorporate these parameters are most useful for seismic zonation.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr781067","usgsCitation":"Fumal, T.E., 1978, Correlations between seismic wave velocities and physical properties of near-surface geologic materials in the southern San Francisco Bay region, California: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 78-1067, Report: ix, 114 p.; 1 Plate: 36.88 × 31.78 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr781067.","productDescription":"Report: ix, 114 p.; 1 Plate: 36.88 × 31.78 inches","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":36540,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/1067/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":36539,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/1067/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":141180,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/1067/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":404092,"rank":4,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_14582.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"scale":"250000","country":"United States","state":"California","otherGeospatial":"San Francisco Bay region","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -122.09,\n              37.083\n            ],\n            [\n              -121.552,\n              37.083\n            ],\n            [\n              -121.552,\n              37.875\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.09,\n              37.875\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.09,\n              37.083\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ad6e4b07f02db6841b0","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Fumal, Thomas E.","contributorId":67882,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Fumal","given":"Thomas","email":"","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[{"id":237,"text":"Earthquake Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":158577,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The Ordovician rocks crop out mainly in two separate areas in Kentucky (fig. 1). The larger area of outcrop, covering much of the middle part of the state, forms the major part of the Blue Grass region of Kentucky. Outcrops of this region are contiguous with outcrops of Ordovician rocks in southwestern Ohio and southeastern Indiana. The smaller area of fairly continuous outcrops of Ordovician rocks lies south of the Blue Grass region along the Cumberland River and its tributaries. These outcrops are contiguous with outcrops of Ordovician rocks in Tennessee. A few isolated exposures of Ordovician rocks lie outside the areas of continuous outcrop.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr78796","usgsCitation":"Weir, The first schemes investigated combine finite-element spatial discretization with split-step time stepping schemes that have been found useful in finite-difference computations. Because of the large number of numerical integrations performed in space and the large sparse matrices solved, these finite-element schemes were found to be economically uncompetitive with finite-difference schemes. A very promising leapfrog scheme is proposed which, when combined with a novel very fast spatial integration procedure, eliminates the need to solve any matrices at all. Additional problems attacked included proper propagation of waves and proper specification of the normal-flow boundary condition. This report indicates work in progress and does not come to a definitive conclusion as to the best approach for finite-element modeling of surface-water problems. The results presented herein represent findings obtained between September 1973 and July 1976.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr78479","usgsCitation":"Gray, W., 1978, A progress report on estuary modeling by the finite-element method: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 78-479, iii, 79 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr78479.","productDescription":"iii, 79 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":426385,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0479/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":142833,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0479/report-thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b1be4b07f02db6a8ddf","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Gray, William G.","contributorId":105308,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Gray","given":"William G.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":159307,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Locations for all samples are given in Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) coordinates. Brief descriptions of rock samples are also included. Rocks analysed are mostly sandstone. Samples of hematitic sandstone of the Rose Hill Formation and limonite-cemented sandstone of the Rocky Gap Sandstone contain high values of iron; these rocks are submarginal iron resources. Some of the same iron-rich samples have a little more barium, copper, cobalt, lead, silver, and/or zinc then is in average sandstone, but they do not suggest the presence of economic deposits of these metals. No other obviously anomalous values related to mineralized rock are present in the data.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr781077D","usgsCitation":"Mei, L., and Lesure, F.G., 1978, Analyses and description of geochemical samples, Mill Creek Wilderness Study Area, Giles County, Virginia: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 78-1077, 18 p. ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr781077D.","productDescription":"18 p. ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":146365,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/1077d/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":43760,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/1077d/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ad5e4b07f02db683a20","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Mei, Leung","contributorId":40204,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Mei","given":"Leung","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":170288,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Lesure, Frank Gardner","contributorId":70752,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Lesure","given":"Frank","email":"","middleInitial":"Gardner","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":170289,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Sand and gravel units of the unconsolidated deposits, which occur principally in valley bottoms, form the best aquifers and commonly provide well yields of several hundred gallons per minute. Carbonate aquifers are the most productive consolidated rock units. Ground water in the Hudson River basin is generally hard and may contain appreciable amounts of iron, salts in solution, or sulfur locally. Basic data on the availability of ground water in the Hudson River drainage area are compiled in (1) a hydrogeologic map of the drainage basin; (2) a table of well depths, yields, concentrations of selected chemical constituents, and hardness of ground water, listed by county and aquifer type; (3) a short text describing the occurrence of ground water in the basin; and (4) a bibliography of ground-water reports pertinent to the area studied.
