Introduction

\n

A geophysical investigation was conducted over the northern part of a large gossan near Bi'r Idimah in the Asir quadrangle. The study was made primarily to determine the electromagnetic response of a deposit of massive sulphides found in exploratory drilling. Presumably the geophysical data could be used to trace the deposit and to locate the richest parts of the mineralized zone for additional test drilling. Field measurements were made by the authors during December 1965.

The area is near latitude 18°20'N., longitude 44°20'E, about 20 Km south of Bi'r Idirah (Fig. 1). Most of the area lies in a wadi bounded by low hills that reach elevations near 1250 meters and rise as ranch as 50 meters above the wadi floor. The gossan is exposed in the wadi and near the crests of a few hills in the southern part of the surveyed area. It is underlain by andesite porphyry and greenstone intruded by granitic rocks, and appears to have been displaced laterally by faulting in the central part of the area. An inclined test hole north of the offset cut massive pyrite between depths 98 and 141 feet, 250 and 260 feet, and between depths 299 and 351 feet. This test and the character of the gossan suggest that the mineralized zone continues southward for a considerable distance.

Introduction

Geophysical studies were continued in the Bi'r Idimah-Wadi Wassat area during February 1965. Detailed electromagnetic measurements were made along selected traverses over the northern part of the gossan to supplement earlier dip-angle data; and reconnaissance surveys were made over the central and southern parts of the gossan. Gossan is exposed near the crests of prominent hills and is marked by a zone of alteration in the lowland. The geophysical exploratory work was done mostly in the lowland to determine the continuity of the gossan and to delineate associated deposits of massive sulphides.

This is the fourth report on the extent and frequency of inundation prepared for the Delaware River Basin Commission. The first of these reports covered floods on the Delaware River in the vicinity of Easton, Pennsylvania and Phillipsburg, New Jersey. The second covered a reach of the Schuylkill River from Conshohocken to Philadelphia. The third was for the Delaware River in the vicinity of Belvidere, New Jersey. The first and third reports were written by George M. Farlekas of the Trenton district, and the second was written by Arthur T. Alter of the Harrisburg district. Specific information as to the areal extent and contents of these studies can be obtained from the Delaware River Basin Commission, P.O. Box 360, Trenton, New Jersey.

This flood inundation study is part of an investigative program financed through a cooperative agreement between the U.S. Geological Survey and the Delaware River Basin Commission. The report was prepared under the direction of Norman H. Beamer, District, Chief, U.S. Geological Survey, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.

The streamflow data for Perkiomen Creek at Graterford were collected by the Pennsylvania Department of Forests and Waters from 1914 to 1931. Since 1931 the data have been collected under a cooperative agreement between the U.S. Geological Survey and the Department of Forests and Waters. Data on high-water marks and areas inundated in past periods of flooding have been obtained from many local residents of Montgomery County. The Reading Company cooperated by allowing survey crews to work on their right-of-way. The author is grateful to Mr. John W. Buchanan for surveys, Mr. Lewis C.
