Land use, precipitation, streamflow, and sediment discharge data were collected from nine small drainage basins in Montgomery County, Maryland, to evaluate runoff and sediment response to sediment-control practices in areas undergoing urban development. Drainage basins ranged in size from 0.35 to 21.1 sq mi and land use ranged from rural to 60 percent urban. Urbanization did not affect low and medium flows, but it did result in increased storm runoff and peak flows. Suspended sediment transported from one of the basins that underwent urban development, the 21.1 sq mi Anacostia River basin, averaged 15 ,400 tons/yr between 1962 and 1974. Bedload was estimated as 5 to 11 percent of the total load. Cropland, urban land, and construction sites were the major sources of sediment. Average annual sediment yields ranged from 065 to 4.3 tons/acre for cropland, 3.7 tons/acre for urban land, and 7 to 100 tons/acre for urban construction sites. The magnitude of the yields from construction sites was significantly affected by (1) the slope of the sites, (2) the proximity of stream channels, (3) buffer zones of natural vegetation, and (4) sediment-control measures. Sediment controls, particularly those enforced under a 1971 sediment-control ordinance, apparently decreased construction-site sediment yields by 60 to 80 percent.

As with the first playback system (Playback Station #1) the tapes are played back on a Bell and Howell VR3700B tape deck and the records are written out on a 16-channel direct-writing Siemens \"0scillomink.\" Separate reproduce heads, tape guides, and tape tension sensor rollers are required for playing back 111 tapes and 1/2\" tapes, but changing these tape deck components is a simple task that requires only a few minutes. The discriminators, patch panels, selector switches, filters, time code translators, and signal conditioning circuits for the time code translators and for the tape-speed-compensation signal are all mounted in an equipment rack that stands beside the playback tape deck. During the past two years, a seismic processing system has been developed within Western Region offices of the U.S. Geological Survey (Pacific-Arctic Branch of Marine Geology). This brief report describes some of the programs within this system that may be of value to others. We process seismic reflection data taken onboard ship to yield a pseudo cross section of the earth as revealed by echoes returned off rock layers within the earth.

Under the Earthquake Hazard Reduction Act of 1977, the federal government is significantly increasing its effort \"to reduce the risk of life and property from future earthquakes in the United States through the establishment and maintenance of an effective earthquake hazards reduction program\". This prgoram is sponsored primarily by the U.S. Geological Survey and the National Science Foundation and includes research by geologists, geophysicists, seismologists, engineers, sociologists, educators, and public policy experts.

In the USGS program, there is a strong emphsis on effective communication of the results of research to a wide community of decision makers and users. This action is the key to implementation at all levels in federal, state, and local government, in the private sector, and on an individual basis.

The U.S. Geological Survey convened a workshop involving approximately 65 people on May 22-24, 1978 in Denver, Colorado, to examine the communication problem. The purpose of the workshop was to evaluate critically the information-flow process for a number of past experiences, including:

(1) land use planning in Portola Valley, California,

\n

(2) the seismic safety element, Santa Clara County, California

\n

(3) earthquake preparedness, Puget Sound, Washington area,

\n

(4) mitigation of geological hazards in Colorado,

\n

The fifth conference in the continuing series under the Earthquake Hazard Reduction Program was held at Massachusetts Institute of Technology on May 25- 27, 1978. Its theme was \"Methodology for Defining Seismic Gaps and Soon-to-Break Seismic Gaps.\" One of the proposed strategies for acquiring critical data on earthquake prediction is to identify soon-to-break gaps and to deploy a variety of instruments in the expected epicentral region. The Conference had as one of its major purposes the evaluation of our present capability to define gaps in general and soon-to-break gaps in particular, and thus to determine if the first step in the strategy proposed above could be fulfilled today.

A mineral survey of the Charles Sheldon wilderness study area, located in Humboldt and Washoe Counties, Nevada, and Lake and Harney Counties, Oregon was conducted in 1974 and 1975 (fig. 1A, 1B, 1C). The mineral resource potential was evaluated by geological, geochemical, and geophysical studies by the U.S. Geological Survey, and by the examination of mines, prospects, and other mineralized localities by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. The investigation identified several areas of significant mineral potential within the study area which includes the Charles Sheldon Antelope Range and the Sheldon National Antelope Refuge (fig. 1B). The Virgin Valley area contains reserves of precious opal, small quantities of decorative building stone, and low-grade uranium resources. The investigation indicates that there are several areas of potential for the discovery at depth of mercury and for base and complex precious metal sulfide deposits within the study area. Reservoir temperatures, estimated from the analysis of thermal springs, suggest that the area has low-to-moderate potential for geothermal resources. The potential for oil, gas, or coal is very low.

Studies of geotechnical properties of marine sediments have recently intensified as the search for natural resources has expanded on the continental shelf. The U. S. Geological Survey has begun a detailed evaluation of geologic environmental conditions in continental shelf regions in order to facilitate safe development of continental shelf resources. Investigations of geohazards in the northeastern Gulf of Alaska (Fig. 1) began in 1974 when 6500 km of high and medium resolution seismic reflection data were collected from the eastern gulf between Yakutat and Montague Island (Carlson, Bruns and Molnia, 1975; Von Huene and others, 1975). The first extensive sediment sampling program was begun in 1975 when approximately 400 samples of continental shelf sediments were collected from the same area of the gulf (Carlson and others, 1977b). A limited number of geotechnical measurements were made from these samples and samples collected by subsequent programs, however, systematic measurement of geotechnical properties was not started until the 1977 cruise of the NOAA ship DISCOVERER. Once unstable environments or \"geohazards\", such as slumps and slides, are delineated, geotechnical testing is an important means of quantifying such geologic processes and consequently furthering our understanding of them.

The purposes of this report are two-fold: (1) to report variations of physical properties in 1-2 meter gravity cores and (2) to recognize any variations in the areal distribution of these properties within and adjacent to an area of mass movement in the northeastern Gulf of Alaska.
