Isotopic analyses of subglacially precipitated calcite from near a modern temperate glacier show that the δ18O (= 18O/ 16O relative to standard mean ocean water) of the calcite records the δ18O of the ice from that glacier. It may therefore be possible to determine the δ18O of Pleistocene ice sheets on the basis of isotopic analyses of calcite formed under that ancient ice. This, in turn, would allow estimation of the δ18O of Pleistocene oceans and correction of the paleotemperature scale based on foraminiferal oxygen isotopic analyses. Copyright

The stratigraphic ranges of marine diatom marker species indicate a distinct diatom sequence in the deposits. A few diatoms that mark deep-sea Miocene deposits are found sparingly in these shallow neritic assemblages. Seven diatom zones based on well-recognized events in the diatom biostratigraphy are proposed for the mid-Atlantic region of the eastern United States. A suggested correlation of these zones is made with some of the deep-sea diatom zonations in the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean basins.

Samples consist of coexisting obsidians, perlites, and felsites that range in age from Pleistocene to Oligocene. Uranium abundances in analyzed obsidians are 5 to 46 ppm. Obsidians and coexisting perlites have identical (±5%) uranium concentrations, which confirms that little or no uranium is lost during hydration. Felsites show uranium depletions as high as 80% relative to coexisting obsidians and perlites. Combination of this data with the results of earlier work on peralkaline rhyolites indicates that uranium depletion seems to increase with age, with different rates of depletion for calc-alkaline (slowest) and peralkaline (fastest) compositions. Uranium distribution is homogeneous in obsidians, perlites, and spherulites, but inhomogeneous in felsites. Electron microprobe analyses of the least-depleted felsites indicate that uranium is associated with concentrations of Fe-Ti-Mn oxides or is in accompanying accessory minerals. Secondary Fe-Mn oxides in older, depleted felsites are uranium-bearing, especially along fractures or flow layers. Uranium loss from felsites seems to be largely controlled by low-temperature solution over long time periods, with some precipitation in secondary phases.

Stable isotopes (lead and initial 87Sr/86Sr) indicate derivation of some rock- and ore-forming elements from continental rather than oceanic lithosphere. A gross east-west metals zonation lacks the clearcut divisions evident to the north and south in the Cordillera. Lineaments, difficult or impossible to document unequivocally, seem nevertheless to have played some role in localizing mineral belts transverse to plate boundaries.
It is suggested that mantle convection in a reactivated ensialic back-arc, triggered at least in part by subduction on one or more Benioff Zones, became increasingly important both with time and with distance eastward from the Mesozoic trench. Small magma pockets were generated episodically by partial fusion of the continental lithosphere, itself probably in-homogeneous, where deep crustal flaws, many ancient but some perhaps newly created, relieved pressure and provided access to the upper crust.

Although both lakes occur within the same vegetation type and share much of their water, the diatom stratigraphy of their bottom sediments indicates that Burntside Lake was less productive in its natural state than Shagawa Lake. The causes for this natural difference are not clearly known, but differences in relative size of drainage area and in bedrock geology may he responsible.
Intensive white settlement around Shagawa Lake beginning in 1866 supplied nutrients that increased its productivity and finally supported the massive blooms of blue-green algae that characterize culturally eutrophic lakes. Burntside Lake was spared such intensive eutrophication, but its diatom record shows that nutrients derived from shoreside recreational cabins and related construction activity are increasing the lake's productivity.
The results of this study show that paleolimnological studies may provide better comparative information for lake rehabilitation programs than do biological and chemical analyses of contemporary unpolluted water bodies.

These deep, localized Neogene basins replaced broad, regionally persistent Paleogene depositional aprons, although some of the Neogene basins in northern and central California had Paleogene precursors. The evolution of each of the Neogene basins is complex, and aspects of the kinematics of each are unique; nonetheless, all can be considered products of an overall right-lateral shear system associated with a sliding margin between the Pacific and North American lithospheric plates.
The sliding margin developed in western California about 29 m.y. ago, when the Pacific plate contacted North America after subduction of the intervening Farallon plate. The initial position of the common boundary between the Pacific and North American plates was along the continental margin. Right slip between the Pacific and North American plates gradually shifted eastward to right-slip faults, such as the San Andreas, located farther inland. This shift seems to be documented by relations in the southern California area. About 300 km of right slip has occurred along the San Andreas fault during the past 10 to 15 m.y., and at least several hundred additional kilometers along associated right-slip faults of the San Andreas system.
The Neogene basins in southern California began to develop during the interval in which the boundary between the Pacific and North American plates shifted from the continental edge to the San Andreas fault, apparently because the step-by-step switch to different surfaces of weakness caused local extension and compression within a broad zone of right-lateral shear. A major phase of basin formation appears to have been synchronous with a change in azimuth of relative shear between the Pacific and North American plates to a more westerly direction, resulting in extensional strain. This change in motion initiated basin development in offshore central and northern California and affected the ongoing development of basins as a result of right slip along the San Andreas and related faults in other parts of California.
