Singer Corporation on contract to the U. S. Geological Survey. Analysis of these data reveals that known thermal features such as hot and cold springs, glaciers and snow fields and lakes are readily identified on day and night images but that areas of known \"hydrothermal\" alteration are not detectable by the system employed.</p><p>Surficial deposits such as talus and frost rubble are generally light toned but commonly darker than outcrops warmed by solar radiation. Sharp constrasts were noted between forest and grassland areas. Attempts were made to use the imagery in mapping surficial deposits in several areas but results were variable due to the overriding effects of outcrop-forest-grassland contrasts. The Project GASBUGGY nuclear explosive of 26 kilotons design yield was detonated on Sunday, December 10, 1967, at 1230:00 Mountain Standard Time. Lawrence Radiation Laboratory reported that the explosive was emplaced at 4240 ft below the ground surface, 1770 ft from the west line and 1218 ft from the south line in Section 36 of Township 29 North, Range 4 West, in Rio Arriba County, New Mexico, about 55 air miles east of the city of Farmington, New Mexico. The geodetic coordinates are: Latitude 36?40'40.4\" North, and Longitude 107?12'30.3\" West. The elevation of surface ground zero was 7204 ft above Mean Sea Level. The detonation occurred in the Lewis shale about 40 ft below its contact with the gas-bearing Pictured Cliffs sandstone. Early indications are that the explosive performed satisfactorily. This document is submitted as a preliminary data report. Anomalous amounts of silver, beryllium, molybdenum, niobium, tin, cobalt, chromium, copper, lead, nickel, titanium, and vanadium are found in the sand samples, but the anomalies are low. Anomalous tungsten is present in some concentrates from wadi sand.\r\n\r\nA small alkalic and paralkalic granite (gp) at the west side of the quadrangle contains tin, niobium, and a low anomaly of lead. The area should be studied for commercial tin and niobium. Beryllium is in the granite and granodiorite (gg) adjacent to the alkalic granite. These units are defined primarily by their relative proportions of limestone and dolomite. The oldest units, the Vintage, Kinzers, and Ledger Formations of Cambrian age, and the Conestoga Limestone of Ordovician age are retained in this report. The Zooks Corner Formation, of Cambrian age, a dolomite unit overlying the Ledger Dolomite, is named here for exposures along Conestoga Creek near the village of Zooks Corner. The Conococheague (Cambrian) and Beekmantown (Ordovician) Limestones, as mapped by earlier workers, have been elevated to group rank and subdivided into formations that are correlated with and named for geologic units in Lebanon and Berks Counties, Pa. These formations, from oldest to youngest, are the Buffalo Springs, Snitz Creek, Millbach, and Richland Formations of the Conococheague Group, and the Stonehenge, Bpler, and Ontelaunee Formations of the Beekmantown Group.
