Gold-bearing quartz veins were discovered in the area in 1918, and between 1920 and 1940 several small mines were in operation around the North and West Arms of the bay. Estimated total production may have been as much as $164,000.</p><p>Bedrock in the Nuka Bay area is a thick Cretaceous section of interbedded slate and graywacke that has been regionally deformed into a series of relatively open, but overturned, folds plunging at low angler to the north-northeast. Except at the folds, bedding and foliation (slaty cleavage) are parallel and dip steeply to the northwest. Small granodiorite dikes fill tensional cross joints in the folded sediments, and a few granodiorite sills are intruded along bedding and foliation planes.</p><p>Quartz veins are abundant throughout the region, but contain significant amounts of gold only in a relatively small area, 8 miles long and 6 miles wide, around North and West Arms. The veins are generally less than 5 feet wide and 300 feet long and consist chiefly of massive white quartz. Arsenopyrite with minor amounts of other sulfide&nbsp;and native gold occurs as irregular masses and pods in the quartz. The larger and more productive veins dip steeply and strike east-west, almost normal to the regional structure, and appear to be confined to competent graywacke beds or dikes. Random channel sampling of the quartz veins indicates gold values as high as 9 ounces per ton across zones as wide as 2 feet.</p><p>A study of the stream sediments throughout the area disclosed several drainages with detectable gold; one, Babcock Creek, contained 0.5 ppm gold, the others from 0.02 to 0.07 ppm. No base metal anomalies were detected. The area appears to warrant further investigation as a potential producer of small amounts of gold. The area drilled covers most of the Silent Canyon caldera and some of the surrounding area. The caldera is rudely elliptical in plan and measures 10 by 14 miles.</p><p>Except on its east edge, the caldera is completely obscured by younger volcanic rocks, including ash-flow sheets from several other centers. The structure, originally inferred from surface mapping and a 20-mgal gravity low, has been confirmed by drilling at 21 sites.</p><p>Petrographic, chemical, and magnetic studies of more than 4,000 feet of drill core have revealed a complex sequence of volcanic rocks. Precaldera rocks include thick talc-alkalic lavas and tuffs. Peralkaline lavas and tuffs of the Silent Canyon center include the Belted Range Tuff (13-14 m.y.), eruption of which resulted in caldera collapse. The Belted Range Tuff has been downdropped 5,000-7,000 feet in the caldera. Subsequently, the depression was partially filled in the eastern part by genetically related peralkaline lavas and tuffs and in the western part by later calc -alkaline lavas and tuffs apparently genetically unrelated to the peralkaline rocks of the Silent Canyon center. Renewed subsidence probably occurred during their eruption.</p><p>Isopach maps of younger tuffs show that the caldera was topographically low during deposition of later (12.5-7 m.y.) ash-flow sheets From this mapping it is inferred that the pyrite deposits occur along a sub-vertical, north-trending fault in andesite and other rocks at the crest line of an anticline in a roof pendant. The pendant is in a composite pluton formed by a per-alkalic magma series. Diorite and biotite granite are the most common and older members of the series. Pyroxene granite and quartz porphyry are less common younger rocks in the series. Extrusive equivalents of these plutonic rocks form dikes in the area. The pyrite is interpreted to have been deposited from hydrothermal solutions after diorite and biotite granite were consolidated and while pyroxene granite was being emplaced. Structures controlling the deposition of the pyrite are regional. Exploration at 1:2,500 scale by geologic, geochemical, and electro-magnetic methods are recommended. Diamond drilling should accompany the other exploration.</p><p>Chemical analyses of 22 specimens of Precambrian marble from the Asir quadrangle shows that seven deposits have a composition within the range of compositions of natural cement rocks used for Roman cement and quick-setting cement. None of the samples is rich enough in CaO for use as a raw material for Portland cement, and most samples of the marble have too much MgO for Portland cement.</p><p>Analyses of the major elements in 71 samples of lateritic material from the As Sarat mountains show that none of the laterite can be used as an ore for iron owing to too little iron and too much alumina, silica, and sulfur. One sample has the alumina-silica ratio of gibbsite or boehmite. One sample has alumina and sulfur in percentages suggesting the presence of alunite, and several other samples probably contain alunite. It ceased downcutting at six different levels 100-200 feet apart, widening its flood plain and alluviating each level with about 30 feet of sandy gravel. These deposits are the only economic source of ground water in large areas of the valley where the underlying bedrock consists of relatively impermeable shale to great depths. Ground water in the alluvium is hard and in the irrigated lowlands is highly mineralized at those places where drainage is slow and discharge by evapotranspiration is great. \r\n\r\nThree bedrock sandstone aquifers are present at moderate depths along three separate reaches of the valley. The sandstones yield soft, moderately to highly mineralized water that contains a high percent sodium. \r\n\r\nWells in alluvial gravel of the irrigated lowlands can yield 100 gallons per minute at many places because the alluvium is fairly permeable and is readily recharged by infiltration of applied irrigation water, canal seepage, and ground water moving into the lowlands from the alluvium of tributary coulees. Seepage from the Two Leggins Canal in the central area probably is large. \r\n\r\nAlluvial gravel deposits have been mantled by thick alluvial and colluvial deposits of silty clay or silt that thin riverward. These fine-grained deposits drain slowly and confine ground water in alluvial gravel under artesian pressure at many places in the irrigated lowlands of the central and southern areas. The piezometric surface is close to the land surface at many places in the central area, and capillary rise and evapotranspiration in waterlogged ground has produced agriculturally harmful alkali deposits. \r\n\r\nWaterlogging of presently irrigated land in the central area will become more widespread if irrigation is extended to higher terraces to the west unless drainage ditches are installed along the base of high-terrace alluvium to intercept increased seepage and spring discharge. S. Geological Survey. In the direct-current arc method, the ground sample is mixed with graphite powder, packed into an electrode crater, and burned to completion. Thirty elements are determined. In the spark method, the sample, ground to pass a 150-mesh screen, is digested in hydrofluoric acid followed by evaporation to dryness and dissolution in aqua regia. The solution is fed into the spark gap by means of a rotating-disk electrode arrangement and is excited with an alternating-current spark discharge. Fourteen elements are determined.
