The rocks have undergone a complex history of crystallization and hydrothermal alteration since their emplacement 600,000 years ago. During cooling from magmatic temperatures, the glassy groundmass underwent either devitrification to alkali feldspar + ??-cristobalite ?? tridymite or granophyric crystallization to alkali feldspar + quartz. Associated with the zones of granophyric crystallization are prismatic quartz crystals in cavities similar to those termed miarolitic in plutonic rocks. Vapor-phase alkali feldspar, tridymite, magnetite, and sporadic ??-cristobalite were deposited in cavities and in void spaces of pumice fragments. Subsequently, some of the vapor-phase alkali feldspar crystals were replaced by microcrystalline quartz, and the vapor-phase minerals were frosted by a coating of saccharoidal quartz. Hydrothermal minerals occur primarily as linings and fillings of cavities and fractures and as altered mafic phenocrysts. Chalcedony is the dominant mineral related to the present hydrothermal regime and occurs as microcrystalline material mixed with various amounts of hematite and goethite. The chalcedony displays intricate layering and was apparently deposited as opal from silica-rich water. Hematite and goethite also replace both mafic phenocrysts and vapor-phase magnetite. Other conspicuous hydrothermal minerals include montmorillonite, pyrite, mordenite, calcite, and fluorite. Clinoptilolite, erionite, illite, kaolinite, and manganese oxides are sporadic. The hydrothermal minerals show little correlation with temperature, but bladed calcite is restricted to a zone of boiling in the tuff and clearly was deposited when CO2 was lost during boiling. Fractures and breccias filled with chalcedony are common throughout Y-5 and may have been produced by rapid disruption of rock caused by sudden decrease of fluid pressure in fractures, most likely a result of fracturing during resurgent doming in this part of the Yellowstone caldera. The chalcedony probably was deposited as opal or ??-cristobalite from a pre-existing silica floc that moved rapidly into the fractures and breccias immediately after the sudden pressure drop. ?? 1978.","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"Journal of Volcanology and Geothermal Research","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","issn":"03770273","usgsCitation":"Keith, T.E., and Muffler, L., 1978, Minerals produced during cooling and hydrothermal alteration of ash flow tuff from Yellowstone drill hole Y-5: Journal of Volcanology and Geothermal Research, v. 3, no. 3-4, p. 373-402.","startPage":"373","endPage":"402","numberOfPages":"30","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":222668,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"3","issue":"3-4","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505a5ae7e4b0c8380cd6f1df","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Keith, T. Water-quality analyses indicate that ground water and surface water in the valley are suitable for most uses and generally meet State standards for source waters for drinking.&nbsp;</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri7894","usgsCitation":"Buller, W., 1978, Hydrologic appraisal of the water resources of the Homer-Preble Valley, New York: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 78-94, v, 31 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri7894.","productDescription":"v, 31 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":157876,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":266236,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1978/0094/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":414121,"rank":3,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_35281.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"country":"United States","state":"New York","otherGeospatial":"Homer-Preble Valley","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -76.208,\n              42.767\n            ],\n            [\n              -76.208,\n              42.642\n            ],\n            [\n              -76.117,\n              42.642\n            ],\n            [\n              -76.117,\n              42.767\n            ],\n            [\n              -76.208,\n              42.767\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a29e4b07f02db6116c2","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Buller, William","contributorId":16449,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Buller","given":"William","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":196317,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

These ages are statistically distinct (40??20 m.y. difference) and are consistent with observed chemical and textural differences. The lower intercepts of the zircon chords of 50??40 and 100+ 75 m.y. for the granite of Long Creek Mountain and granite of Lankin Dome, respectively, are not consistent with reasonable continuous diffusion lead-loss curves but do correspond well with the known (Laramide) time of uplift of the rocks. Epidote, zircon, and apatite from silicified and epidotized zones in the granites all record at least one postcrystallization disturbance in addition to the Laramide event and do not define a unique age of silicification and epidotization. The lower limit of ???2,500 m.y. provided by the least disturbed epidote, however, suggests that these rocks were probably formed by deuteric processes shortly after emplacement of the granite of the Lankin Dome. The earlier of the two disturbances that affected the minerals of the silicified-epidotized rock can be bracketed between 1,350 and 2,240 m.y. ago and is probably the same event that lowered mineral K-Ar and ages in the region. Zircon suites from both types of granite show well-defined linear correlations among U content, common-Pb content, and degree of discordance. One of the zircon suites has an extremely high common-Pb content (up to 180 ppm) and exhibits a component of radiogenic-Pb loss that is apparently unrelated to radiation damage. ?? 1978 Springer-Verlag.","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"Contributions to Mineralogy and Petrology","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","publisherLocation":"Springer-Verlag","doi":"10.1007/BF00375510","issn":"00107999","usgsCitation":"Ludwig, K., and Stuckless, J., 1978, Uranium-lead isotope systematics and apparent ages of zircons and other minerals in precambrian granitic rocks, Granite Mountains, Wyoming: Contributions to Mineralogy and Petrology, v. 65, no. 3, p. 243-254, https://doi.org/10.1007/BF00375510.","startPage":"243","endPage":"254","numberOfPages":"12","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":205290,"rank":9999,"type":{"id":10,"text":"Digital Object Identifier"},"url":"https://dx.doi.org/10.1007/BF00375510"},{"id":222718,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"65","issue":"3","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505bbdede4b08c986b3292ef","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Ludwig, K.R.","contributorId":97112,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Ludwig","given":"K.R.","email":"","affiliations":[{"id":218,"text":"Denver Federal Center","active":false,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":363467,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Stuckless, J. Individual grains from the low-temperature ash (LTA) of the same coal were also studied. The visual resolution of the SEM permitted the detection of submicron mineral grains, which could then be analysed by the attached energy-dispersive system. Emphasis was placed on the highly reflective grains in the carbominerite bands. Among the most abundant accessory minerals observed were rutile, zircon, and rare-earth-bearing minerals. Small (1–5 μm) particles of what may be authigenic iron-rich chromite and a nickel silicate form rims on quartz grains. The SEM also permits the observation of grain morphology and mineral intergrowths. These data are useful in determining authigenicity and diagenic alteration. Substances in density splits of LTA include authigenic, detrital, extraterrestrial magnetite, tourmaline, and evaporite (?) minerals, and a fluorine-bearing amphibole. This analytical approach allows the determination of specific sites for many of the trace elements in coals. In the Waynesburg coal, most of the chromium is in the iron-chromium rims, the fluorine is in the amphibole, and the rare-earth elements are in rare-earth-bearing minerals. The ability to relate trace-element data to specific minerals will aid in predicting the behaviour of elements in coal during combustion, liquefaction, gasification, weathering, and leaching processes. This ability also permits insight into the degree of mobility of these elements in coal and provides clues to sedimentological and diagenetic conditions.</span></p>","language":"English","publisher":"Elsevier","doi":"10.1016/0016-2361(78)90135-7","issn":"00162361","usgsCitation":"Finkelman, R.B., and Stanton, R., 1978, Identification and significance of accessory minerals from a bituminous coal: Fuel, v. 57, no. 12, p. 763-768, https://doi.org/10.1016/0016-2361(78)90135-7.","productDescription":"6 p.","startPage":"763","endPage":"768","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":222590,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Pennsylvania","city":"Waynesburg","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -80.26310281897143,\n              39.94513567555663\n            ],\n            [\n              -80.26310281897143,\n              39.84840840636784\n            ],\n            [\n              -80.0660060099735,\n              39.84840840636784\n            ],\n            [\n              -80.0660060099735,\n              39.94513567555663\n            ],\n            [\n              -80.26310281897143,\n              39.94513567555663\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"57","issue":"12","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505a3814e4b0c8380cd61415","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Finkelman, R. The Th/U ratios of abyssal and Japanese tholeiites are distinctly lower than those of tholeiites and alkali basalts from other areas. It is thought that these low values reflect a part of the mantle depleted in large ionic lithophile elements. Thus a mantle evolution model is presented, in which Th/U ratios of the depleted zone in the mantle have decreased to ∼2, and U/Pb ratios have increased, showing an apparent ∼1.5-b.y. isochron trend in the<span>&nbsp;</span><sup>207</sup>Pb/<sup>204</sup>Pb vs.<span>&nbsp;</span><sup>206</sup>Pb/<sup>204</sup>Pb plot. The Pb isotopic compositions of basalts from the island of Hawaii are distinct for each of the five volcanoes, and within each volcano, Pb's of tholeiites and alkali basalts are similar. An interaction between partially melted material (hot plume?) of the asthenosphere and the lithosphere is suggested to explain the trend in the Pb isotopic compositions of Hawaiian basalts.</p></div></div></div><ul id=\"issue-navigation\" class=\"issue-navigation u-margin-s-bottom u-bg-grey1\"></ul>","language":"English","publisher":"Elsevier","doi":"10.1016/0012-821X(78)90126-7","issn":"0012821X","usgsCitation":"Tatsumoto, M., 1978, Isotopic composition of lead in oceanic basalt and its implication to mantle evolution: Earth and Planetary Science Letters, v. 38, no. 1, p. 63-87, https://doi.org/10.1016/0012-821X(78)90126-7.","productDescription":"25 p.","startPage":"63","endPage":"87","numberOfPages":"25","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":222717,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"38","issue":"1","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505a3fa2e4b0c8380cd6469e","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Tatsumoto, M.","contributorId":76798,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Tatsumoto","given":"M.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":363465,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The purpose of these experiments was to measure the HI associated with the feeding of a complete diet and purified fat, protein, and carbohydrate to salmonids. Measured amounts were fed and the heat production was measured by direct calorimetry. Increased heat production was observed about 30 minutes after feeding and remained elevated for 1 to 5 hours, depending on the amount and type of material fed. The HI of protein was much lower with fish than with mammals and amounted to &lt;5% of the ingested ME. The HI's of carbohydrate and protein were not significantly different from each other but both were higher than fat. The HI, when complete diets were fed, was &lt;3% of the ME. The net energy of protein is higher for fish than for birds or mammals. A major part of the superior energetic efficiency of fish is due to the low energy cost of protein metabolism.</span></p>","language":"English","publisher":"Elsevier","doi":"10.1093/jn/108.6.1025","usgsCitation":"Smith, R.R., Rumsey, G.L., and Scott, M.L., 1978, Heat increment associated with dietary protein, fat, carbohydrate and complete diets in salmonids: comparative energetic efficiency: Journal of Nutrition, v. 108, no. 6, p. 1025-1032, https://doi.org/10.1093/jn/108.6.1025.","productDescription":"8 p.","startPage":"1025","endPage":"1032","numberOfPages":"8","costCenters":[{"id":365,"text":"Leetown Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":129121,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"108","issue":"6","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a6ae4b07f02db63cf02","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Smith, R. The purpose of the present study was to determine the feasibility of direct calorimetry as a method for measuring heat production of fish and to determine the effect of environmental temperature and body size on the metabolic rate of several species. An adiabatic bomb calorimeter was modified to hold living fish and to measure small increments of heat. Heat production of rainbow, brook and lake trout, and Atlantic salmon weighting 1 to 4 g each was measured at temperatures ranging from 3° to 18°. Heat production of rainbow trout having individual body weights from 0.85 to 57.0 g was measured at 15°. Direct calorimetry was found to be a satisfactory method for measuring heat production of fish. Tests were reproducible and could be completed in 6 to 8 hours. The heat production changed linearly with temperature over the range tested. Regression equations for heat production for fish weighing 1 to 4 g were: for rainbow trout, HP = 0.59 + 0.0525T; for Atlantic salmon, HP = 0.66 + 0.0339T; for brook trout, HP = 0.37 + 0.0770T; and for lake trout, HP = 0.41 + 0.0680T where HP is kcal/kg/hr and T is temperature. The effect of size on metabolic rate was linear from 1 to 4 g and proportional to W</span>0.63<span>&nbsp;from 4 to 57 g.</span></p>","language":"English","publisher":"Elsevier","doi":"10.1093/jn/108.6.1017","usgsCitation":"Smith, R.R., Rumsey, G.L., and Scott, M.L., 1978, Net energy maintenance requirements of salmonids as measured by direct calorimetry: Effect of body size and environmental temperature: Journal of Nutrition, v. 108, no. 6, p. 1017-1024, https://doi.org/10.1093/jn/108.6.1017.","productDescription":"8 p.","startPage":"1017","endPage":"1024","numberOfPages":"8","costCenters":[{"id":365,"text":"Leetown Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":129122,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"108","issue":"6","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4affe4b07f02db697bd5","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Smith, R.
