The study of the watershed described in this report is designated as Project No. 2 in the Joint Federal-State Acid Mine Drainage Pollution Control Demonstration Program. The area studied encompasses the West End mine of the Blue Coal Company.
\nBedrock in the watershed, from oldest to youngest, consists of the Mauch Chunk Formation of Mississippian and, in part, of Pennsylvanian age; the Pottsville Formation of Pennsylvanian age; and the Llewellyn Formation of Pennsylvanian age. The anthracite beds are in the Llewellyn Formation.

It was compiled primarily to provide information for those concerned with land use and development on or near these fault zones. The map shows the locations of all known or suspected fault traces formed by recent tectonic displacements of the ground surface along the Hayward and the southern part of the Calaveras fault zones. The displacements may have been due to violent rupture during earthquakes, to imperceptible movement not accompanied by felt earthquakes (slippage or \"creep\"), or to some combination of both. Map users should keep in mind that the lines shown on the map are primarily guides for locating fault traces on the ground and are not necessarily located with the precision needed for every engineering or land-use project.

The area is in Oceanus Procellarum, south of the equator, approximately 320 km south of the crater Kepler. It is covered by mare material and the evenness of the mare surface is broken only by mare ridges and some low domes. Relatively few of the superposed impact craters are larger than 200 m across. Terra material is absent.
