This symposium, held by the National </span><span>Park Service, was to determine the applicability of the Wilderness </span><span>Act </span><span>of </span><span>1964 to underground and surface portions of the Park (W. Drew </span><span>Chick, Jr., written communication, 1967). Scientific evidence bearing </span><span>on the relationships between human surface activities and natural </span><span>underground openings was examined and discussed at the symposium. </span><span>This report discusses relations between various types of surface </span><span>activities and physical damage to the cave openings and features. </span><span>Additional interpretive material </span><span>is </span><span>taken from the literature and from </span><span>limited laboratory information. Possible hydrologic and biologic </span><span>effects are not considered here, </span><span>but </span><span>were investigated by other </span><span>members of the symposium. Hydrologic effects are discussed in </span><span>companion report by Robert V. These include the Monson Gneiss of Middle Ordovician or older age, the Partridge Formation of Middle Ordovician age, and the Middle to Late Devonian Hardwick Granite of the New Hampshire Plutonic Series. The Monson Gneiss is a series of interlayered biotite and hornblende gneisses and amphibolites. They were originally felsic to mafic tuffs and minor flows that were deposited in shallow seas.- The light-gray gneisses are characterized by uniform bedding and minor magnetite and hornblende. The amphibolites generally show bedding and contain quartz, some of which is thought to have been introduced during deposition and consolidation in their marine environment. The Partridge Formation includes schists generally having graphite, sillimanite, cordierite, and a lack of potash feldspar; fine-grained, equigranular calc-silicate gneisses; minor quartzites; and minor amphibolites similar to those of the Monson Gneiss. \r\n\r\nThe Hardwick Granite is an undifferentiated igneous complex which includes the Bethlehem. Gneiss, Kinsman Quartz Monzonite, Spaulding Quartz Diorite, and Concord Granite of the New Hampshire Plutonic Series. In general there are two distinctive rock types: granite and tonalite. The granite is characterized by red-brown biotite and zoned apatite crystals; the tonalite is finer grained, has dark-olive or green-brown biotite, and has relatively large amounts of sphene and allanite. This belt of Mesozoic and Cenozoic rocks encompasses an area of about 400,000 to 450,000 square miles, more than three-fourths of which is covered by the Atlantic Ocean. The volume of Mesozoic and Cenozoic rocks beneath the Atlantic Coastal Plain and Continental Shelf exceeds 450,000 cubic miles, perhaps by a considerable amount. More than one-half of this is seaward far enough to contain marine source rocks in sufficient proportion to attract exploration for oil. A larger fraction, perhaps three-quarters of the volume, may be of interest in exploration for gas.</p><p>The Coastal Plain consists of land between the crystalline piedmont of the Appalachian System and mean low-tide from southern Florida to the tip of Long Island plus a few small offshore islands and the Cape Cod Peninsula. This is an area of more than 100,000 square miles.</p><p>The Continental Shelf extends from mean law-tide to the break marking the beginning of the continental rise, which is somewhat less than 600 feet in depth at most places. It is a gently sloping platform, about 350,000 square miles in area, that widens from less than 3 miles off southern Florida to about 285 miles off Newfoundland.</p><p>The Blake Plateau occupies an area of about 70,000 square miles between the 500 and 5,000-foot bottom contours from the Cape Hatteras vicinity to the northernmost bank of the Bahamas. It has a gentle slope with only minor irregularities and scattered patches of Recent sediments.</p><p>Both gravity and magnetic anomalies along the Atlantic Coast reflect primarily compositional differences at considerable depths in the earth's crust, but are related to some extent to the structure and composition of the Coastal Plain sedimentary rocks and shallow basement. Four alternating belts of predominantly positive and predominantly negative Bouguer gravity anomalies extend diagonally across the region from southwest to northeast. It also provided for a high explosive (HE) comparison shot in a nearby drill hole. The purpose of the experiment was to gather information on the seismic decoupling of a nuclear explosion in a cavity by comparing seismic signals from a nuclear shot in the Salmon cavity with seismic signals recorded from Salmon and with seismic signals recorded from a muall (about 2 tons) HE shot in the salt dome. Surface seismic measurements were made by the U.S. Geological Survey, the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey, and the Air Force Technical Applications Center with coordination and overall direction by the Lawrence Radiation Laboratory. This report covers only the seismic measurements made by the U. S. Geological Survey. The first objective of this report is to describe the field recording procedures and the data obtained by the U. S. Geological Survey from these events.
