Since the mid-1950 's dissolved oxygen quality has gradually improved owing to low-flow augmentation, the achievement of basinwide secondary treatment, and the use of other waste-management practices. As a result, summer dissolved-oxygen levels have increased, salmon runs have returned, and the overall effort is widely regarded as a singular water-quality success. To document the improved dissolved-oxygen regimen, the U.S. Geological Survey conducted intensive studies of the Willamette during the summer low-flow seasons of 1973 and 1974. During each summer the mean daily dissolved-oxygen levels were found to be higher than 5 milligrams per liter throughout the river. Because of the basinwide secondary treatment, carbonaceous deoxygenation rates were low. In addition, almost half of the biochemical oxygen demand entering the Willamette was from diffuse (nonpoint) sources rather than outfalls. These results indicated that point-source biochemical oxygen demand was no longer the primary cause of dissolved-oxygen depletion. Instead, the major causes of deoxygenation were nitrification in a shallow ' surface active ' reach below Salem and an anomalous oxygen demand (believed to be primarily of benthal origin) in Portland Harbor. Studies in 1976 include economic geology, regional geology, stratigraphy, environmental geology, engineering geology, hydrology, and marine geology. Discussions of the findings or, in some instances, narratives of the course of the investigations are grouped in eight subdivisions corresponding to the six major onshore geographic regions, the offshore projects, and projects that are statewide in scope. Locations of the study areas are shown. In addition, many reports and maps covering various aspects of the geology and mineral and water resources of the State were published. They are flooding, landsliding, and subsidence over underground mines. In 1973, information was most complete relative to flooding and least complete relative to landsliding.

Accordingly, in July 1973, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and The Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) entered into an agreement by which the USGS undertook studies chiefly aimed at increasing knowledge of landsliding and mine subsidence relative to land use, but having other ramifications as well, as part of a larger ARC 'Land-use and physical-resource analysis' (LUPRA) program. The chief geographic focus was Allegheny County, but adjacent areas were included in some investigations.

Resulting products, exclusive of this report, are:

1. Forty-three provisional maps of landslide, distribution and susceptibility and of land modified by man in Allegheny County, 1:24,000 scale, 7½ -minute quadrangle format, released to open files.

2. Four USGS Miscellaneous Field Studies (MF) maps of Allegheny County showing (a) bedrock, MF685A; (b) susceptibility to landsliding, MF-685B ; (c) coal-mining features, MF-685C; and (d) zones that can be affected by flooding, landsliding and undermining, MF-685D; all at the scale of 1:50,000.

3. Two MF maps showing coal-mining activity and related information and sites of recorded mine-subsidence events, and one MF map classifying land surface by relative potentiality of mine subsidence, in Allegheny, Washington, and Westmoreland Counties, Pa., at a scale of 1:125,000--MF-693A through MF-693C.

4. A companion report to the Allegheny County map of susceptibility to landsliding--USGS Circular 728.

5. Five MF maps, largely in chart form, describing interaction of the shallow ground-water regime with mining-related problems, landsliding, heavy storm precipitation, and other features and processes, largely in Allegheny County--MF-641A through MF-641E.

Map products are directly applicable to general classification of land for susceptibility to landsliding and mine subsidence and, to a lesser extent, flooding and engineering characteristics. The hydrogeologic charts enable greater understanding of environmental effects of ground water. All products are guides to expected conditions, but none are substitutes for detailed investigations of specific sites by competent technical personnel on the ground.

Specific results and findings are:

1. Knowledge of .susceptibility to landsliding in Allegheny County now is adequate for application to countywide land-use planning.

2. Although a general classification of land in Allegheny, Washington, and Westmoreland Counties relative to mine-subsidence incidents was prepared, data are wholly inadequate for even moderately precise prediction of subsidence events over previously mined-out areas; the accumulation of adequate data might not repay the effort in terms of damage prevention.

4. Commonwealth-of-Pennsylvania regulations, have been very successful in limiting mine-subsidence damage over areas mined after 1966.

5. Undermining and consequent subsidence may have affected the ground-water regime more widely than heretofore believed.

Except for the earth-disturbance inventory that resulted in the maps of susceptibility to landsliding and man-modified land, methods used in the studies largely were conventional. The inventory and ensuing analysis combined aerial photographic interpretation with field work and incorporation of existing data. The method worked very well for the purposes of defining distribution of landslides and areas having different susceptibilities to landsliding. However, if susceptibility to landsliding alone had been the goal, this could have been determined adequately by using photographs at smaller scales and appreciably less expenditure of effort per unit of ground area.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Government Printing Office","doi":"10.3133/cir747","usgsCitation":"Briggs, R.P., 1977, Environmental geology, Allegheny County and vicinity, Where naleds occur, stream channels are wide and often form braided channels. Their distribution can be related to changes in stream gradient and to the occurrence of springs. Large naleds, such as on the Kongakut River, often remain through the summer melt season to form the nucleus of icing in the succeeding winter. Major naleds also are likely to significantly influence the nature of permafrost in their immediate vicinity. The map of naleds may serve as a guide to the occurrence of year-round flowing water, a sparse commodity in northern Alaska.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr7791","usgsCitation":"Harden, D., Barnes, P.W., and Reimnitz, E., 1977, Distribution and character of naleds in northeastern Alaska: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 77-91, 20 [i.e. 28] leaves :ill., maps (1 fold.) ;27 cm.; (31 p. - PGS), https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr7791.","productDescription":"20 [i.e. 28] leaves :ill., maps (1 fold.) ;27 cm.; (31 p. - PGS)","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":143041,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0091/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":37061,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0091/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a9be4b07f02db65dd2f","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Harden, Deborah","contributorId":99980,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Harden","given":"Deborah","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":159519,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Barnes, Peter W.","contributorId":6042,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Barnes","given":"Peter","email":"","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":159517,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Reimnitz, Erk","contributorId":17963,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Reimnitz","given":"Erk","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":159518,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

The area studied is about 800 square miles in southern Niobrara and northern Goshen Counties of Wyoming. Long-term average annual recharge to the aquifer from streams and precipitation is estimated to total about 24,270 acre-feet. Pumpage from public-supply and irrigation wells is estimated to have totaled about 48,000 acre-feet from 1938 through 1972. This pumpage did not cause any noticeable decrease in natural discharge and it is assumed there has been no significant change in ground-water storage. Pumpage is estimated to total about 39,500 acre-feet for the 3-year period 1973 through 1975. A digital model was developed to simulate the ground-water system in the Arikaree Formation. The model can be used to indicate the general effect of applying hydraulic stresses to the aquifer. Adequate exploration to find fracture or solution openings is required. Five hundred gallons per minute (30 liters per second) or more may be obtained from some of the carbonate rocks. Linear features are visible on 1:1,000,000-to 1:24,000-scale aerial imagery. The results of the above measurements are analyzed and presented in a form suitable for use in planning the operation of a proposed reservoir which may be built near the upstream end of the reach.

Three examples of how the results may be used are presented.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr77479","usgsCitation":"Steacy, R.E., 1977, Water loss from Jordan Creek near Allentown, Pennsylvania - 1973 to 1976: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 77-479, v, 26 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr77479.","productDescription":"v, 26 p.","costCenters":[{"id":532,"text":"Pennsylvania Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":142550,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0479/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":343685,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0479/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Pennsylvania","geographicExtents":"{\"type\":\"FeatureCollection\",\"features\":[{\"type\":\"Feature\",\"geometry\":{\"type\":\"Polygon\",\"coordinates\":[[[-75.6107,40.7861],[-75.6079,40.7765],[-75.6064,40.7665],[-75.6037,40.7538],[-75.5996,40.746],[-75.5961,40.741],[-75.5932,40.7378],[-75.589,40.7345],[-75.5866,40.734],[-75.583,40.7344],[-75.5799,40.7348],[-75.5763,40.7352],[-75.5726,40.7338],[-75.5703,40.7311],[-75.5692,40.7283],[-75.5657,40.7237],[-75.559,40.7218],[-75.5548,40.7213],[-75.5499,40.723],[-75.5462,40.7248],[-75.5431,40.7284],[-75.543,40.732],[-75.5404,40.737],[-75.5373,40.7383],[-75.5319,40.7373],[-75.5283,40.7354],[-75.5261,40.7263],[-75.5193,40.7099],[-75.5129,40.7002],[-75.5024,40.6856],[-75.4959,40.6791],[-75.4894,40.6763],[-75.4876,40.6731],[-75.4791,40.6534],[-75.4332,40.6699],[-75.4167,40.6533],[-75.3901,40.6297],[-75.3948,40.5944],[-75.3949,40.5922],[-75.4049,40.581],[-75.3692,40.5586],[-75.3354,40.5372],[-75.3551,40.5239],[-75.3879,40.5018],[-75.3909,40.5],[-75.4008,40.4938],[-75.4026,40.4925],[-75.4094,40.4881],[-75.4113,40.4872],[-75.4454,40.4547],[-75.4492,40.4511],[-75.451,40.4493],[-75.4548,40.4457],[-75.4672,40.4346],[-75.4734,40.4292],[-75.4759,40.4266],[-75.4833,40.4194],[-75.4994,40.4283],[-75.5065,40.4325],[-75.5249,40.4441],[-75.5278,40.4464],[-75.5582,40.4641],[-75.6206,40.5023],[-75.6849,40.544],[-75.6956,40.5505],[-75.7188,40.5654],[-75.7402,40.5802],[-75.7498,40.5862],[-75.7677,40.5974],[-75.7701,40.5992],[-75.7796,40.6052],[-75.8005,40.6182],[-75.89,40.6761],[-75.8509,40.691],[-75.8032,40.709],[-75.7767,40.7236],[-75.7595,40.7333],[-75.7546,40.7351],[-75.7467,40.7382],[-75.7411,40.7412],[-75.733,40.7489],[-75.7281,40.7524],[-75.6993,40.7643],[-75.6943,40.7674],[-75.6857,40.7727],[-75.6821,40.7735],[-75.6656,40.7769],[-75.6277,40.7841],[-75.6107,40.7861]]]},\"properties\":{\"name\":\"Lehigh\",\"state\":\"PA\"}}]}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4955e4b07f02db595347","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Steacy, Robert E.","contributorId":71162,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Steacy","given":"Robert","email":"","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":162908,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Depths at 151 gaging stations on streams that were not significantly affected by man made changes were related to basin characteristics by multiple regression techniques. The NASA-Johnson Space Center (NASA-JSC) in southeastern Harris County, Texas, was about 13 to 19 feet above mean sea level in 1974 and sinking at a rate of more than 0.2 foot per year. NASA-JSC officials, concerned about the hurricane flooding hazard, requested the U.S. Geological Survey to study the feasibility of artificially recharging the aquifers for subsidence abatement. Hydrologic digital models were developed for theoretical determinations of quantities of water needed, under various well-array plans, for artificial recharge of the Chicot and Evangeline aquifers in order to halt the local subsidence at NASA-JSC. The programs for the models were developed for analysis of three-dimensional ground-water flow. Total injection rates of between 2,000 and 14,000 gallons per minute under three general well-array plans were determined for a range of residual clay pore pressures of 10 to 70 feet of hydraulic head. The space distributions of the resultant hydraulic heads, illustrated for injection rates of 3,600 and 8 ,400 gallons per minute, indicated that, for the same rate, increasing the number and spread of the injection locations reduces the head gradients within NASA-JSC.
