Problems related to development of the aquifer include maximum safe yield, local contamination, local salt-water intrusion, corrosiveness of the water, areas of high iron concentration, and increasing nitrate concentration. The city of Pensacola is seeking hydrologic information, including water-quality data, to plan for future expansion of the water-supply system. </p><p>This report summarizes the third year's findings of a 6-year study of the sand-and-gravel aquifer. Although the thickness of the aquifer locally exceeds 1,000 feet (300 metres) most of the clean sand layers are no more than 450 feet (140 metres) below land surface. The highest head is at the north edge of the area; the head is drawn down below sea level in areas of heavy pumping. Ground water moves southward from the northern half of the county to be intercepted near Cantonment. Virtually all ground water discharged south of Cantonment derives from local precipitation. </p><p>The report contains maps showing concentrations of carbon dioxide, nitrate, and iron in water from the aquifer, potentiometric maps, geohydrologic sections, and lithologic and radioactive logs of test holes.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological The program computes head changes in the confined aquifer and the rate and volume of water withdrawn from aquifer boundaries.</p><p>The program was used to model the sandstone aquifer underlying Dane County, Wisconsin. The aquifer was modeled as a confined aquifer recharged by leakage from the overlying upper aquifer. The physical properties of the aquifer system needed for the model were approximated using aquifer-test data and by matching drawdowns resulting from aquifer development through 1970 with draw-downs computed by the model.</p><p>The sandstone aquifer should be able to supply the water needs of Dane County well beyond 1990. Maximum regional drawdowns of approximately 40 feet (12 m) between 1970 and 1990 were computed by the model. The proposed pool would be maintained through the use of water formerly diverted by the Catlin Canal Company to irrigate land in the Arkansas River valley. This plan was evaluated using a mathematical simulation model developed to test management alternatives in a stream-aquifer system. A 25-year period from 1949 through 1973 was simulated using monthly time intervals. Geological Survey; user's guide","docAbstract":"The U.S. Geological Survey investigates the occurrence , quantity, quality, distribution, and movement of the surface and underground water resources of the Nation. The investigations, which are conducted by the Water Resources Division, of the Survey include: systematic collection, analysis, and interpretation of water data; investigation of in and agricultural water requirements; research and development to improve study techniques and methodologies to better understand the hydrologic principles that form the scientific basis of investigation; and publication and other forms of release to the public of results and data from these investigations. \n\nA large scale computerized storage and retrieval system is used by the Geological Survey to store and disseminate water data acquired through its many activities. The Geological Survey's National Water Data Storage and Retrieval System (WATSTORE) was implemented in November 1971. In addition to its data processing, storage, and retrieval capabilities, WATSTORE has the capability of providing computer-printed tables, computer-printed graphs, statistical analyses of data, and digital plots. The system is operated and maintained on the central computer facility of the Survey at its National Center, Reston, Va. an through approximately 50 terminals in Water Resources Division district an subdistrict offices located in major cities throughout the country. Asccess to WATSTORE is limited by hardware, available telephone lines, etc; for example, direct access is possible only through terminal equipment capable of interfacing\nwith an IBM 370/155 computer.\n\nWATSTORE is now (1975) available to other Federal agencies and selected cooperators of the Geological Survey who acquire and(or) use water data. Physical, chemical, and biological </span><span>parameters were determined in surface water, bottom sediment, and </span><span>bulk precipitation (rainfall and dry fallout).</span></p><p><span>The geology of the area, bottom sediment, bulk precipitation, natural, urban, and agricultural runoff, and the characteristics of the hydrologic system in the Everglades influence the type and concentration of each chemical constituent and how it affects the water quality. </span></p><p><span>The quality of surface water in the agricultural area between Lake Okeechobee and the water conservation areas is markedly different from that of other surface water in southeastern Florida. In general, the water in this area is higher in concentrations of most chemical constituents. Man has engaged in cultural activities, both agricultural and urban, which have affected the water quality in the northern and eastern segments of the area of investigation. </span></p><p><span>The quality of the water improves, however, as it flows to the south and east because there is minimal input from man's activities and many of the constituents are assimilated by plants, sorbed on organic material and clay in the bottom sediments, and entrapped within the sediments. Dilution by rainfall and concentration by evapotranspiration are also important factors that influence the quality of surface water in the area of investigation. </span></p><p><span>The area of investigation in the Everglades is a sink for macronutrients, trace metals, and chlorinated-hydrocarbon insecticides. These constituents do not move through the system freely. They become tied up in various complexes and for that reason, the water being delivered to Everglades National Park is of better quality than the water entering the northern edge of the water conservation areas. Total potable water in storage in the outwash and alluvial aquifers of the Mississippi River valley and the subbasins is about 45,000 billion gallons. This is about 10 percent of the water in storage in Lake Ontario. Water in storage in other aquifers of the region is probably at least several times that in the outwash and alluvial aquifers. Estimated ground-water recharge in the subbasins is 23,000 million gallons per day.</p>\n<p>A comparison of ground-water withdrawals with estimated ground-water recharge suggests that the large ground-water resource of the region is not being fully utilized. Ground-water use by domestic, commercial, and rural interests is only 4 percent of recharge. Ground-water use (1965) by industry is only 3 percent of recharge.</p>\n<p>Water in the outwash and alluvial aquifers of much of the valley of the Mississippi River in and south of St. Paul, Minn. of the Illinois River, the Lower Minnesota River, the Wisconsin River, the Lower Black River, the Wapsipinicon River, the Lower Rock River, and the Upper Des Moines River can be considered a regional resource. In these areas the ground-water resources are of sufficient magnitude to satisfy more than just local needs. For example, under certain specified conditions, ground water in the above areas can supply approximately 20 million additional people. Factors other than water supply, of course, will be constraints on development in the region.</p>\n<p>Advances in techniques in ground-water hydrology during recent years have provided methods that the hydrologist and planner can use for planning and design of ground-water developments. Therefore, the planner can now resolve some of the development and management questions that historically have bred uncertainty when this part of the water resource was considered for Areas were planimetered on U.S. Geological Survey topographic quadrangle maps and balanced to known areas taken from&nbsp;Smithsonian Geographical Tables of areas of quadrilaterals of the earth's surface (procedures and standards recommended by Subcommittee on Hydrology, Federal Inter-Agency River Basin Committee). Streams are tabulated in sequence; first, the Ohio River basin, followed by the St. Lawrence River basin, and finally, the Mississippi River basin. Streams are listed in downstream order, starting at the headwaters; the rank of the stream system within each basin is indicated by indention. At sites where streamflow data had been collected, previously assigned U.S. Geological Survey eight-digit numbers are used. These numbers, which describe unique sites, increase in downstream order. All locations are identified by reference to a town, land-line location, topo­graphic quadrangle, and county at the point where the drainage area was determined. Drainage is to Lake of the Woods, either directly or by the Rainy River. The watershed includes about 470 square miles (1,220 km2) of Lake of the Woods, one-third of the lake&rsquo;s total area.</p>\n<p>The watershed, a part of the plain of glacial Lake Agassiz, is an area of low relief and slopes generally northward. Details of topography may be obtained from U.S. Geological Survey 7 1/2-minute quadrangle maps, as indexed.</p>\n<p>Surficial materials consist mainly of peat, lake-washed till, and beach deposits. Extensive wetlands typify much of the watershed. Bedrock is exposed in places near Lake of the Woods and the Rainy River.</p>\n<p>Except where cleared for cultivation, most of the watershed is covered by coniferous forests. Harvest of forest products, agriculture, and fishing are major economic activities.</p>\n<p>The 1970 population of the watershed was bout 6,600, concentrated chiefly along the Rainy River and the The Lake Wingra basin, which includes a small eutrophic lake within the city of Madison, Wis., is partly a protected area and partly an urbanized area. Measured and estimated inflow and outflow to and from the lake in 1 year (June 1972 to May 1973) was about 4.5 metres (15 feet)&mdash;approximately twice the volume of the lake. Inflow to the lake is about 25 percent from direct precipitation on the lake surface, and the rest from nearly equal amounts of surface runoff and ground-water inflow. Outflow from the lake is about 10 percent ground-water outflow, 15 percent evaporation from the lake surface, and 75 percent discharge at the surface outlet. Increased withdrawal of water from municipal and industrial wells in Madison has slowed the rate of flow through the lake.</p>\n<p>The calculated 1972 water budget for the lake showed gains of about 3,560 millimetres (140 inches) and losses of about 3,500 millimetres (138 inches). A discrepancy of about 60 millimetres (2 inches) probably was caused in part by uncertainties in ground-water inflow and outflow.
