All references to reports of the Geological Survey, to most reports of the U.S. Bureau of Mines, and to most reports of the State of Alaska Division of Geological and Geophysical Surveys and its predecessor State and Territorial agencies released before January 1, 1977, are summarized. Sediment yields were determined by using the transport-duration technique. It is estimated that 34,100 tons of suspended sediment are transported to the Lakes annually. Of this, 16,100 tons were from the Fox River and 14,400 tons from Nippersink Creek. Based on drainage-area ratios, it is estimated that the additional 3,600 tons were from Squaw Creek, a minor tributary. Analysis of 0.45-2.5 ?m field and laboratory spectra shows that iron-deficient opalites in the Cuprite mining district, Nevada, have an intense OH-absorption band near 2.2 ?m owing to their clay mineral and alunite contents and that this spectral feature is absent or weak in adjacent unaltered tuff and basalt. To evaluate the usefulness of this spectral feature for discriminating between altered and unaltered rocks, we generated color-ratio composite images from multispectral (0.46-2.36 ?m) aircraft data. The altered rocks in the district can be discriminated from unaltered rocks with few ambiguities; in addition, some effects of mineralogical zoning can be discriminated within the altered area. Samples were collected from the Mississippi River-Gulf Outlet, Mississippi River at Southwest Pass, Mississippi River at New Orleans, Bayou Rigaud near Grand Isle, Barataria Bay and Waterway, Bayou La Carpe near Houma, Atchafalaya Bay (Ship Channel), Lower Atchafalaya River area, Intracoastal Waterway near Calumet, Intracoastal Waterway (Port Allen to Morgan City), Petite Anse area, and Calcasieu River and Ship Channel. These studies were conductd to determine potential environmental effects of dredging activities in the waterways. The Geological survey collected, treated, and analyzed 383 water and water-sediment mixture samples from 85 dredging sites and 142 postdredging samples (72 sites). Water samples were collected 100 yards upstream and downstream from the dredge effluent, from the disposal area, and from the effluent outfall during the dredge phase of the study; samples were collected at former dredge sites during the postdredging phase. Samples were analyzed for selected metals, pesticides, nutrients, and organic constituents. The analytical data are presented in tables. Sampling sites are shown on maps. The test well was drilled to a depth of 4,341 feet to determine the water-resource potential of the Madison Limestone and associated rocks to meet future water needs in a 188,000 sq mi region that includes the coal-rich area of the Northern Great Plains. Drilling and testing were designed to yield a maximum of stratigraphic, structural, geophysical, and hydrologic information. All significant water-bearing units contain relatively freshwater (less than 2,000 mg/liter dissolved solids). Three water-bearing units, which are now cased off, may be potential sources of ground water in the area of the test well. These are the Hulett Sandstone Member of the Sundance Formation, the Minnekahta Limestone, and the upper sandy part of the Minnelusa Formation. The main source of water is the ground water in the several aquifers that are made up of one or more formations. The aquifers are stacked one on the other and generally are not hydraulically connected; the composite stratigraphic column indicates the relative position of the formations. The main waterbearing units are the N and D aquifers, the Toreva and Wepo Formations, and the alluvium. The geologic structure and topographic relief preclude a uniform depth to water in the area; therefore, recommended drilling depths should be determined on an individual site basis. Ground-water development has been mainly for public, domestic, and livestock supplies, In 1975 about 500 acre-ft of ground water was withdrawn from the aquifers in the southern part of the black Mesa area; mo st of the water was from the N aquifer. In 1951-76-the period for which data were used to compile these maps-withdrawals from the N aquifer resulted in water-level declines in parts of the area . Measurable changes in water levels have not occurred in the other aquifers in the 25-year period.</p><p>The hydrologic data on which these maps are based are available, for the most part, in computer-printout form for consultation at the Arizona Water Commission, 222 North Central Avenue, Suite 800, Phoenix, and at U.S. Geological Survey offices in: Federal Building, 301 West Congress Street, Tucson; Valley Center, Suite 1880, Phoenix; and 2255 North Gemini Drive, Building 3, Flagstaff.
