Most of the volcanic units sampled are shown on the U.S. Geological Survey geologic map of the Timber Mountain caldera area (I-891) and are described in U.S. Geological Survey Professional Paper 919. Measurements for the preceding 4 years are included to serve as references illustrating declining or rising water levels. Changes in water levels from December 1975 to March 1977 ranged from a rise of 12.4 feet (3.8 meters) to a decline of 10.8 feet (3.3 meters). Water levels appear to be declining in the eastern part of the study area and stable to slightly rising in the western part. These data can be used by well owners for planning their irrigation schedules for the next irrigation season and can be used by water managers for developing plans to manage the ground-water resources. Fish Lake Valley and Columbus Salt Marsh contain waters having, relatively high lithium and potassium concentrations. At least a part of these waters is probably derived from the leaching of Tertiary rocks containing saline minerals. The DCP's transmitted 3260 messages comprising 26,080 ambient, surface, and near-surface temperature records at an accuracy of <span>±</span>1.15<span>°</span>C for 1121 instrument days between November 14, 1972 and April 17, 1974. In harsh, windy, high-altitude volcanic environments the DCP functioned best with a small dipole antenna. Sixteen kg of alkaline batteries provided a viable power supply for the DCP systems, operated at a low-duty cycle, for 5 to 8 months. A proposed solar power supply system would lengthen the period of unattended operation of the system considerably. Special methods of data handling such as data storage via a proposed memory system would increase the significance of the twice-daily data reception enabling the DCP's to record full <span>diurnal-temperature cycles at volcanic or geothermal sites.&nbsp;</span></p><div><span>Refinements in the temperature-monitoring system designed and operated in experiment SR 251 included a backup system consisting of a multipoint temperature scanner, a servo mechanism and an analog-to-digital recorder. While over 90 percent of the pluton consists of granodiorite with average contents of uranium and thorium, zones of porphyritic to gneissic monzonite along the southern and eastern margins of the pluton (fig. 1) contain as much as 100 ppm (parts per million) uranium and 269 ppm thorium (Staatz and Miller, 1976; table 1, this report). Of these four streams, three contain acid mine drainage, with Spring Creek carrying more than 50 percent of the total load for every element analyzed except lead. The Pit River (the fourth stream) contains low concentrations of metals and has neutral pH values; but since it carries the greatest discharge, its computed loads also are high. The immediate danger to fishin the Shasta-Keswick region is not the contribution of acidity and toxic metals to the total load, but toxicity at the localized point of mixing where the acid streams mix with lake water. Zinc and cadmium, in addition to copper, are present in high concentrations for five of the seventeen streams and may exert significant synergistic effects. The presence of arsenic in some of the ore minerals suggests that it also may contribute to the toxicity of the mine drainage. The most radioactive is the Graniteville Granite which contains an average of 16.9 ppm U and 42.6 ppm Th. The Butler Hill and Breadtray Granites also contain anomalous amounts, averaging 6.2 and 5.6 ppm U and 23.5 and 20.5 ppm Th respectively. Other Precambrian granitic rocks have normal concentrations of- U and Th. Fission track 'maps' indicate that high concentrations of uranium are associated with magnetite in the red granites; this uranium is presumed to be readily leachable by hydrothermal or supergene solutions. \r\n\r\nNo uranium minerals or ore grade concentrations of uranium were observed in or near the granites, but there-are conceptual reasons for the possible existence of uranium deposits in intragranitic veins and onlapping Cambrian-Ordovician sedimentary rocks. Although the red granites constitute a good potential source of uranium, there is not much evidence for uranium having been mobilized. Two specific areas of investigation include: measurements of the quality and quantity of water in the irrigation canals and drainage system and the diel (during a 24-hour period) variation of water-quality parameters in the main stem of Bear Creek. The irrigation and drainage study involves 25 sites in canals and natural drainageways. One hundred thirty-three samples were collected for analysis, and discharge was determined at the time of collection. The diel study includes six sites on Bear Creek.
