These water-level records: (1) provide an index to available ground-water supplies; (2) facilitate the prediction of trends in water levels that will indicate likely changes in storage; (3) aid in the prediction of the base flow of streams; (4) provide information for use in basic research; (5) provide long-time continuous records of fluctuations of water levels in representative wells; and (6) serve as a framework to which other types of hydrologic data my be related.\r\nPrior to 1956, measurements of water levels in observation wells in Oklahoma were included in water-supply papers published annually by the U.S. Geological Survey. Beginning with the 1956 calendar year, however, Geological Survey water-level reports will contain only records of a selected network of observation wells, and will be published at 5-year intervals. The first of this series, for the 1956-59 period was published in 1962.\r\n\r\nThis report has been prepared primarily to present water-level records of wells not included in the Federal network. However, for the sake of completeness it includes water-level records of Federal wells that either have been or will be published in water-supply papers since 1955. This report, which contains water-level records for the 2-year period (1965-66), is the fourth in a series presenting water-level records for all permanent observations wells in Oklahoma. It was felt over an area extending from San Francisco eastward to Salt Lake City and from Bakersfield northward beyond Chico, Calif. Ground breakage due to seismic shaking occurred in unconsolidated alluvium along a zone about 10 miles long that trends about N. 30° E. and extends from a point west of Prosser Reservoir, 4 miles northeast of Truckee, to Hoke Valley. The concentration of ground breakage along this zone suggests that it may be related to a subsurface northeastward-trending fault rather than to buried extensions of the northwestward-trending faults that dominate the regional geologic structure.</p><p>Other effects of the earthquake include the following: (1) Damage to Prosser and Boca Dams, (2) minor damage to several bridges on Interstate Highway 80, (3) several earthquake-generated slumps or landslides on Interstate Highway 80 between Boca Dam and the California-Nevada boundary, (4) damage to the caretaker's house at Boca Dam and a lumber shed at Loyalton, (5) damage by falling rocks to the Farad powerhouse, to the wooden flume which supplies water to the powerhouse, and to the Southern Pacific Lines in Truckee Canyon, (6) minor damage to water wells and water distribution systems, particularly at Truckee, and (7) rejuvenation of springs throughout the Truckee-Russel Valley area.</p><p><br data-mce-bogus=\"1\"></p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/cir537","usgsCitation":"Kachadoorian, R., Yerkes, R.F., and Waananen, A.O., 1967, Effects of the Truckee, California, earthquake of September 12, 1966: U.S. Geological Survey Circular 537, Report: iii, 14 p.; Detailed knowledge of tribal areas was acquired at different times in different regions. For example, by the time knowledge was gained of the areas occupied by Plains tribes, many groups in the East had become extinct or had moved from their aboriginal locations. Some of these movements ultimately affected distributions on the Plains prior to reasonably detailed knowledge of Plains occupancy. Hence, it is not possible to approximate aboriginal areas of occupancy on a single map of continental scope. Furthermore, most groups did not occupy sharply defined areas, so that the delineation of territories is misleading.</p><p>Distributions were derived, with slight modifications, from Indian tribes of North America (Driver and others, 1953), and boundaries within California were simplified after Languages, territories, and names of California Indian tribes (Heizer, 1966). According to the authors of these publications, the boundaries shown are those of the mid-17th century in the Southeast and the eastern part of the Northeast, the late 17th and early 18th centuries farther west in the Northeast, the late 18th and early 19th centuries in the Plains, the late 18th century in California, and the middle-to-late 19th century elsewhere. The reference here, however, is to exploration of earth itself and to the unique capabilities for study of the earth that space technology will provide. Demands for water, minerals, energy, food, and for working, living and recreational space are outrunning our ability to meet them by traditional methods. In order to satisfy these demands, it is necessary now, just as it has been in the past, to look to the activities, the instruments, and the technologies that in part create the pressures for aid in meeting them. Studies being made at the U.S. Geological Survey and elsewhere of the potential applications of remote sensors in space to earth resources research indicate that now, at last, it will be possible to approach solutions on a regional or global basis.
