The sites were Mapleton Depot and Newport, Pennsylvania, on the Juniata River, and Harrisburg and Marietta, Pennsylvania, and Conowingo, Maryland, on the Susquehanna River. The purpose for the simulations was to determine the effects of a new reservoir, Raystown Lake, on the low-flow frequency characteristics of these sites. Raystown Lake is on Raystown Branch Juniata River, a tributary to the Juniata River.
\n
Output from a reservoir-regulation model of Raystown Lake was used as input to the flow-routing models. In addition, a reservoir-routing model was developed for the hydroelectric power dams on the lower Susquehanna River.
\n
Low-flow frequency curves, based on the post-Raystown Lake simulated flows, were compared to similar curves based on pre-Raystown observed data. The comparison indicated that operation of the lake will cause estimated increases in the 7-day 10-year low flows ranging from 420 cfs at Mapleton Depot to 290 cfs at Marietta and Conowingo over the 7-day 10-year low flows for pre-Raystown conditions.
\n
Although inherent modeling errors exist in all of these simulated data, the overall quality of the simulated flows and the low-flow frequency curves is considered good. The Eutaw-McShan aquifer, of Cretaceous age, consists of the interconnected irregular sand beds in the Eutaw and McShan Formations. The aquifer contains fresh water in an area of about 8,000 sq mi in northeastern Mississippi. Water produced from the aquifer by 59 water systems and several industries in 1975 averaged about 24 mgd. Water levels have declined about 200 feet below levels of the early 1900 's at Tupelo and West Point and it is estimated that the aquifer is developed to near its potential yield at those places. The aquifer is used extensively in areas where the dissolved-solids concentration of the water is more than 500 mg/liter and in some places where the concentration exceeds 1,000 mg/liter. The most common water-quality problems are excessive chloride and fluoride. The ground-water reservoir is made up of continental deposits, alluvium, and stream-channel deposits ranging in age from Pliocene to Holocene. Most of the water is pumped from the alluvium. Most ground water (about 20,000 acre-feet or 25 cubic hectometers per year) is derived from stream seepage. Natural discharge (discharge to streams, evapotranspiration, and underflow) has averaged about 21,000 acre-feet per year. Pumping and flow from artesian wells has averaged about 2,750 acre-feet per year. Ground water occurs in both confined and unconfined aquifers. The ground-water reservoir is full, and about 230,000 acre-feet of water is stored in the depth interval 10-200 feet. The water is chemically and biologically suitable for domestic or irrigation use, although hardness is high for domestic use and, locally, dissolved iron is a problem. There is potential for developing additional ground-water supplies. Three cases that represent projected maximum, mean, and minimum combined irrigation and industrial ground-water withdrawals at annual rates of 16,176, 11,168, and 6,749 acre-feet, respectively, were considered. Water-level declines of more than 5 feet over areas of 124, 120, and 98 square miles and depletions in streamflow of 14.4, 8.9, and 7.2 cfs from the Laramie and North Laramie Rivers were predicted to occur at the end of a 40-year simulation period for these maximum, mean, and minimum withdrawal rates, respectively. A tenfold incrase in the vertical hydraulic conductivity that was assumed for the streambeds results in smaller predicted drawdowns near the Laramie and North Laramie Rivers and a 36 percent increase in the predicted depletion in streamflow for the North Laramie River. Two carbonate stages can be distinguished and defined on the basis of mineral association, compositional range and position in the sequence of ore deposition. Electron microprobe analyses show that the early pre-ore carbonate stage is comprised of rhodochrosite with a compositional range of 68 to 93 mole percent MnCO3, 7 to 32 mole percent FeCO3, 2 to 15 mole percent CaCO3, and 0.5 to 4 mole percent MgCO3. The later intra-ore carbonate stage is made up of siderite-manganosiderite with a broad range of iron content (33 to 94 mole percent FeCO3; 6 to 67 mole percent MnCO3; 1 to 13 mole percent CaCO3; and 1 to 10 mole percent MgCO3). Both carbonate stages are spatially restricted within the vein system, the rhodochrosite limited to the southern third and the siderite limited to the northern two-thirds. The two stages have not been found at the same sample locality. \r\n\r\nThe two stages of carbonate define two of the five main depositional stages in the history of the Creede hydrothermal system and thereby document broad scale variations within the depositing, and continually evolving fluids. However, the complexity of the textural and mineralogical variations within each carbonate stage limits their usefulness in unraveling the finer details of the character of the ore fluids. The frequently massive rhodochroslte has undergone several periods of leaching and regrowth which, except at one locality, cannot be resolved by compositional, textural or color variations. Although some compositionally zoned siderite rhombs have been documented, the siderite, too, has had a complicated history of leaching and regrowth. The zoning indicates (i) an early low-calcium siderite + hematite growth followed by (2) relatively high-calcium siderite depositlon (without hematite) followed by (3) low-calcium siderite deposition without hematite. The composition of the high-calcium siderite lies well outside of the recognized stability field for siderite at 250?C and, therefore, is considered either a metastable phase or possibly a new mineral. \r\n\r\nCarbon and oxygen isotopic compositions of the carbonates together with the hydrogen isotopic composition of inclusion fluids suggest that the fluids depositing the carbonates either were deep-seated in origin, or, less likely, were meteoric waters which came in contact with a large volume of magmatic rock with which it exchanged isotopes. The oxygen and hydrogen isotopic compositions of the fluids that deposited the carbonates are significantly different from those that yielded the other vein minerals (sphalerite, chlorite, sericite, quartz, adularla). The latter minerals appear to-have been deposited from two distinctive fluids of meteoric origin. The stability fields of minerals present during the carbonate stages have been calculated for 250?Co The results indicate that conditions during carbonate deposition were not drastically different from those suggested by Barton and others (1977) for main-stage ore deposition, although little ore, if any, was deposited during the carbonate stages. A new value for the free energy of formation of siderite was calculated since all of the most recently published values predict too small a stability field for the siderite based on the occurrence of siderite at Creede, The change to the more iron-rich composition of the later stage carbonate was probably controlled by the pyrite-chlorite buffer which was not present during early-stage carbonate deposition.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr77706","usgsCitation":"Wetlaufer, P.H., 1977, Geochemistry and mineralogy of the carbonates of the Creede mining district, Colorado: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 77-706, x, 134 leaves :ill. The predominant form of dissolved nitrogen was nitrate. Nitrate concentrations (as N) in the upper glacial aquifer in both counties ranged from 0 to 20 milligrams per liter (mg/L) ; those in the Magothy aquifer ranged from 0 to 20 mg/L but were generally much lower in Suffolk County than in Nassau County. Nitrate concentrations (as N) decreased with depth in both counties; below 400 feet, concentrations ranged from 0 to 0.2 mg/L. \r\n\r\nNitrate concentrations (as N) of streams ranged from 0 to ii mg/L, which is an indication of the general quality of water in much of the upper glacial aquifer, the source of most of the streamflow. Generally, concentrations of total nitrogen in streams draining the sewered area of Nassau County were lower than those in streams draining the unsewered area. Median concentrations of total inorganic nitrogen (as N) were 1.3 mg/L for the sewered area and 7.5 mg/L for the unsewered area. The seven include the five largest of the eastern North American earthquake .centers. The immediate localities of the gravity anomalies are, however, relatively free of seismicity, particularly the largest events. The anomalies are presumably caused by extensive mafic or ultramafic masses embedded in the crystalline basement. Laboratory experiments show that serpentinized gabbro and dunite fail under stress in a creep mode rather than in a stick-slip mode. A possible explanation of the correlation between the earthquake patterns and the anomalies is that the mafic/ultramafic masses are serpentinized and can only sustain low stress fields thereby acting to concentrate regional stress outside their boundaries. The proposed model is analogous to the hole-in-plate problem of mechanics whereby stresses around a hole in a stressed plate may. reach values several times the average.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr77134","usgsCitation":"Kane, M.F., 1977, Correlation of major eastern earthquake centers with mafic/ultramafic basement masses: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 77-134, 16 leaves :maps ;27 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr77134.","productDescription":"16 leaves :maps ;27 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":143106,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0134/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":37481,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0134/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ad7e4b07f02db6845fa","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Kane, Martin Francis","contributorId":87923,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Kane","given":"Martin","email":"","middleInitial":"Francis","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":160214,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Two specific areas of investigation include: measurements of the quality and quantity of water in the irrigation canals and drainage system and the diel (during a 24-hour period) variation of water-quality parameters in the main stem of Bear Creek. The irrigation and drainage study involves 25 sites in canals and natural drainageways. One hundred thirty-three samples were collected for analysis, and discharge was determined at the time of collection. The diel study includes six sites on Bear Creek. On August 23-24, four parameters were monitored at all six sites during a 24-hour period.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Portland, OR","doi":"10.3133/ofr7790","usgsCitation":"McKenzie, S.W., and Wittenberg, L.A., 1977, 1976 water-quality data in Bear Creek basin, Medford, Oregon: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 77-90, iv, 44 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr7790.","productDescription":"iv, 44 p.","numberOfPages":"55","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":518,"text":"Oregon Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":143411,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/ofr7790.jpg"},{"id":324855,"rank":1,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0090/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Oregon","city":"Medford","otherGeospatial":"Bear Creek Basin","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -122.98370361328124,\n              42.01155019592861\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.98370361328124,\n              42.41940144722477\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.22152709960936,\n              42.41940144722477\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.22152709960936,\n              42.01155019592861\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.98370361328124,\n              42.01155019592861\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"53cd4912e4b0b290850eedb9","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"McKenzie, Stuart W.","contributorId":27841,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"McKenzie","given":"Stuart","email":"","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":161140,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Wittenberg, Loren A.","contributorId":93914,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Wittenberg","given":"Loren","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":161141,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}
