This report contains discharge records for 217 gaging stations; stage only records for 1 lake station; stage and contents for 9 lakes and reservoirs; water quality for 61 gaging stations, 43 water-quality stations, and 4 lake stations; and water levels for 25 observation wells. Also included are data for 205 crest-stage partial-record stations and 53 smaller reservoirs. Additional water data were collected at various sites, not involved in the systematic data collection program, and are published as miscellaneous measurements. A few pertinent stations (not included above) in bordering States are also included in this report; however, numerous stations in Canada operated for the International Joint Commission under cooperative agreement with the U.S. Department of State are included in the above. Locations of gaging stations are shown on figure 3, ground-water observation wells are shown on figure 4, and water-quality stations are shown on figure 4. These data represent that part of the National Water Data System collected by the U.S. Geological Survey and cooperating State and Federal agencies in Malachite coatings along fractures in the ancient workings and nearby large piles of slag indicate the mine was worked for copper.</p>\n<p>Quartz porphyry of Precambrian age is the principal host rock of the deposit. The quartz porphyry is associated with volcanic rocks of mafic to intermediate composition. All rocks have been deformed and metamorphosed to various types of schist, of which quartz-sericite-chlorite schist is the most common.</p>\n<p>Mineralization is thought to be controlled by the convergence of three fault patterns that strike N 60&deg;W., N 45&deg;W and N. 20&deg;W, respectively, and dip steeply west to vertical.&nbsp;Cross faults that extend between faults of the N 45&deg;W. pattern have influenced deposition of sulfides locally. Southeast-plunging lineation derived from two converging directions of planar schistosity also may have exerted control on sulfide deposition.</p>\n<p>Detailed geologic mapping of surface features and geochemical and geophysical studies indicated that the deposit warranted subsurface exploration. Accordingly, eight holes were drilled that delineated possible economic-grade sulfide deposits in an area about 300 m long and which is known to continue to a depth of more than 200 m. However, drilling found copper-zinc mineralization along a strike length of 850 m. Drill findings show that copper and zinc sulfides partially replace chlorite and higher concentrations of chlorite generally define the higher-grade mineralization. The more intensely chloritized zones tend to follow the N.45&deg;W. fracture pattern. The information will be considered, together with other factors, in the preparation of an analysis of the impact of a potential nuclear-waste repository on the environment. Most of the geologic units in and adjacent to the Permian salt deposits are characterized by low permeabilities and highly mineralized water. Sandstone of the Delaware Mountain Group, which underlies the salt, has an average hydraulic conductivity of 0.16 ft/d and an average porosity of 15.65 percent. Flow is north-northeastward toward the margin of the Capitan Limestone, at velocities ranging from 0.0005 to 0.0008 ft/d. The Capitan Limestone, a relatively high yielding limestone-reef aquifer adjacent to the study area, has transmissivity values ranging from 500 sq ft/d to 10,000 sq ft/d and an average hydraulic conductivity of about 5 ft/d. Water movement west of the Pecos River is northeastward in the reef, with discharge at Carlsbad Springs. East of the Pecos River, water moves at very low rates and the direction of movement is uncertain. The Castile and Salado Formations, which might be used to contain the nuclear waste, have a few isolated pockets of brine and gas, but generally transmit little or no ground water. The most radioactive is the Graniteville Granite which contains an average of 16.9 ppm U and 42.6 ppm Th. The Butler Hill and Breadtray Granites also contain anomalous amounts, averaging 6.2 and 5.6 ppm U and 23.5 and 20.5 ppm Th respectively. Other Precambrian granitic rocks have normal concentrations of- U and Th. Fission track 'maps' indicate that high concentrations of uranium are associated with magnetite in the red granites; this uranium is presumed to be readily leachable by hydrothermal or supergene solutions. \r\n\r\nNo uranium minerals or ore grade concentrations of uranium were observed in or near the granites, but there-are conceptual reasons for the possible existence of uranium deposits in intragranitic veins and onlapping Cambrian-Ordovician sedimentary rocks. Although the red granites constitute a good potential source of uranium, there is not much evidence for uranium having been mobilized. A linear combination of these equations leads to a parametric equation of characteristic form, which consists of two parts: total differentiation along the bicharacteristics and partial differentiation in space. For its numerical solution, the specified-time-interval scheme has been used. The unknown, partial space-derivative terms can be eliminated first by suitable combinations of difference equations, converted from the corresponding differential forms and written along four selected bicharacteristics and a streamline. Other unknowns are thus made solvable from the known variables on the current time plane. The computation is carried to the second-order accuracy by using trapezoidal rule of integration. Means to handle complex boundary conditions are developed for practical application. Computer programs have been written and a mathematical model has been constructed for flow simulation. The favorable computer outputs suggest further exploration and development of model worthwhile. Results suggest that at least locally, sedimentary rocks of Tertiary age contain oil and gas source and reservoir rocks capable of generating and accumulating liquid and gas hydrocarbons. Paleogene strata rich in organic carbon are immature. However, strata in offshore basins to the north and south may have been subjected to a more productive thermal environment. Total organic carbon content of fine grained Neogene strata appears to be significantly lower than in Paleogene rocks, possibly reflecting nonmarine or brackish water environments of deposition. Neogene sandstone beds locally yield high values of porosity and permeability to depths of about 8,000 feet (2,439 m). Below this depth, reservoir potential rapidly declines. \r\n\r\nThe General Petroleum, Great Basins No. 1 well drilled along the shore of Bristol Bay reached granitic rocks. Other wells drilled closer to the axis of the present volcanic arc indicate that both Tertiary and Mesozoic sedimentary rocks have been intruded by dikes and sills of andesite and basalt. Ground-water withdrawals calculated for 1975 totaled about 16,000 acre-feet (2.0 x10<sup>7</sup> cubic meters) of pumped ground water and 12,000 acre-feet (1.5x10<sup>7</sup> cubic meters) of ground water extracted through flowing wells. The ground water is contained in alluvial and basalt aquifers comprised of gravel, sand, and basalt interbedded with fine-grained silt and clay. Nineteen shallow test holes were drilled and cased to define the extent and effectiveness of confining layers in the southern part of the valley. Water-level fluctuations monitored in about 75 wells showed seasonal variations of 40 feet (12 meters) in the northern part of the area and less than 5 feet (1.5 meters) in some wells in the southern part of the area. Numerous stream-discharge measurements were made to define areal and temporal distribution of groundwater discharge. Most of the flow in Silver Creek rises from springs discharging from the shallow aquifer near the edge of the confining beds. Only a small amount of discharge to the creek is attributable to upward movement of water through the confining beds. Discharge from the artesian aquifer near Stanton Crossing may contribute a significant portion of the spring flow which feeds the Big Wood River. Seasonal fluctuations in spring discharges are directly related to fluctuations in ground-water levels. Although losses from Silver Creek downstream from the confining beds were documented during various times of the year, losses were relatively small.
