Uptake of 2,4-D was affected by pH, temperature, and the presence of other organic and inorganic compounds. Uptake was more pronounced at pH values less than 6, which implies that there may be some interaction between charged groups on the cell and the ionized carboxyl group of 2,4-D. Active transport, carrier-mediated diffusion, passive diffusion, and adsorption were considered as possible mechanisms. Though uptake was inhibited by glucose, sodium azide, and fluorodinitrobenzene (but not by uranyl ion), 2,4-D was not accumulated against a concentration gradient, a necessary consequence of an active transport system, nor was isotope counterflow found to occur. Because the long-range type of investigation would require several years for hydrologic data accumulation, it cannot provide any immediate information on the changes in watershed behavior arising as a result of urbanization. A short-range investigation, however, based on synthetic evaluation of present data would provide immediate answers. It is in the realm of this short-range objective that this study of a small urban watershed is directed.","language":"English","publisher":"Texas Water Development Board","publisherLocation":"Austin, TX","collaboration":"Prepared in the Center for Research in Water Resources at the University of Texas in cooperation with the Texas Water Development Board","usgsCitation":"Espey, W.H., Morgan, C.W., and Masch, F.D., 1966, A study of some effects of urbanization on storm runoff from a small watershed: Report 23, xiv, 110 p.","productDescription":"xiv, 110 p.","numberOfPages":"122","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":275315,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/70047174.png"},{"id":275313,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://www.twdb.state.tx.us/publications/reports/numbered_reports/doc/R23/R23.pdf"}],"country":"United States","state":"Texas","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -106.6,25.8 ], [ -106.6,36.5 ], [ -93.5,36.5 ], [ -93.5,25.8 ], [ -106.6,25.8 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"51efa5f0e4b0b09fbe58f179","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Espey, William Howard Jr.","contributorId":102361,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Espey","given":"William","suffix":"Jr.","email":"","middleInitial":"Howard","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":481227,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Morgan, Carl W.","contributorId":58924,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Morgan","given":"Carl","email":"","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":481226,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Masch, Frank D.","contributorId":19456,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Masch","given":"Frank","email":"","middleInitial":"D.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":481225,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

Annual precipitation has ranged from about 30 to 67 inches and has averaged about 45 inches over a 44-year period. Approximately 21 inches of water are returned to the atmosphere each year by evaporation and transpiration; the remainder of the annual precipitation either flows overland to streams or percolates downward to the water table and ultimately flows out of the basin in the Quinebaug River. During the autumn and winter months precipitation normally is sufficient to cause a substantial increase in the amount of water stored underground and in surface reservoirs within the basin, whereas in the summer most of the precipitation is lost through evaporation and transpiration, resulting in sharply reduced streamflow and lowered ground-water levels.","language":"English","publisher":"Connecticut Water Resources Commission","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the Connecticut Water Resources Commission","usgsCitation":"Randall, A.D., Thomas, M.P., Thomas, C.E., and Baker, J.A., 1966, Water resources inventory of Connecticut Part 1: Quinebaug River basin: Connecticut Water Resources Bulletin 8, v, 102 p.; Plate A: 30.96 x 55.54 inches; Plate B: 30.56 x 55.83 inches; Plate C: 30.11 x 56.07 inches; Plate D: 29.28 x 54.36 inches.","productDescription":"v, 102 p.; Plate A: 30.96 x 55.54 inches; Plate B: 30.56 x 55.83 inches; Plate C: 30.11 x 56.07 inches; Plate D: 29.28 x 54.36 inches","additionalOnlineFiles":"Y","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":258833,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/ctwrb/0008/report.pdf","size":"8463","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":258834,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/ctwrb/0008/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":258829,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/ctwrb/0008/plate-a.pdf","size":"5415","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":258830,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/ctwrb/0008/plate-b.pdf","size":"5727","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":258831,"rank":402,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/ctwrb/0008/plate-c.pdf","size":"5463","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":258832,"rank":403,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/ctwrb/0008/plate-d.pdf","size":"5509","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Connecticut","otherGeospatial":"Quinebaug River Basin","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -72.11749999999999,41.46666666666667 ], [ -72.11749999999999,42.034166666666664 ], [ -71.76666666666667,42.034166666666664 ], [ -71.76666666666667,41.46666666666667 ], [ -72.11749999999999,41.46666666666667 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505bcb77e4b08c986b32d67b","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Randall, Allan D. arandall@usgs.gov","contributorId":1168,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Randall","given":"Allan","email":"arandall@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"D.","affiliations":[{"id":474,"text":"New York Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":463980,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Thomas, Mendall P.","contributorId":104314,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Thomas","given":"Mendall","email":"","middleInitial":"P.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":463983,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Thomas, Chester E. For convenience there are also Included records for a few pertinent gaging stations in bordering States. The records were collected and computed by the Water Resources Division of the U.S. Geological Survey, under the direction of W. E. Hale, District Chief, Water Resources Division. This report is the fifth In a series presenting, annually, basic data on surface-water records by States. Through September 30, 1960, the records of discharge and stage of streams and contents and stage of lakes or reservoirs were published in an annual series of U. S. Geological Survey water-supply papers entitled Surface Water Supply of the United States. Since 1951 there have been 20 volumes in the series; each volume covered an area whose boundaries coincided with those of certain natural drainage areas. The records in New Mexico were contained in Parts 7, 8 and 9 of that series. Beginning with the 1961 water year, streamflow records and related data will be released by the Geological Survey in annual reports on a State-boundary basis. Distribution of these basic-data reports will be limited and primarily for local needs. The records later will be published in Geological Survey water-supply papers at 5~year intervals. These 5-year water-supply papers will show daily discharge and will be compi led On the same geographical areas previously used for the annual series; however, some of the 14 parts of conterminous United States will be further subdivided.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Santa Fe, NM","doi":"10.3133/wdrNM651","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the State of New Mexico and with other agencies","usgsCitation":"Water Resources Division, U.S. Geological Survey, 1966, Water resources data for New Mexico, water year 1965; Part 1. Based on percentage of total volume, 20 of the most important foods are listed. The six most important duck species in the kill were: mallard (Anas platyrhynchos), wood duck (Aix sponsa), widgeon (Mareca americam), pintail (Anas acuta) , black duck (Anas rubripes) , and green-winged teal (Anas carolinensis). Six plant species made up 5 percent or more of the total volume of food items found in the stomachs of all ducks. Only seeds of oaks (Quercus sp.), corn, sweet gum (Liquidambar Styraciflua), and buttonbush (Cephalanthus occidentalis) were consumed. Some seed, but mostly the vegetative portions of hydrochloa (Hydrochloa carolinensis) and only the vegetative portions of southern rice cutgrass (Leersia hexandra) were taken. The more important game ducks concentrated on the refuge farmlands when water levels were below 72 feet mean sea level (msl). When levels reached 75 feet msl, natural foods became available, ducks dispersed from refuge areas, and hunting success increased greatly.
","largerWorkTitle":"","language":"English","publisher":"Wiley","doi":"10.2307/3798750","usgsCitation":"McGilvrey, F., 1966, Fall food habits of ducks near Santee Refuge, South Carolina: Journal of Wildlife Management, v. 30, no. 3, p. 577-580, https://doi.org/10.2307/3798750.","productDescription":"4 p.","startPage":"577","endPage":"580","numberOfPages":"4","costCenters":[{"id":531,"text":"Patuxent Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":196262,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"South Carolina","otherGeospatial":"Lake Marion, Bluff Unit of Santee National Wildlife Refuge","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -80.48858642578125,\n              33.520789053588494\n            ],\n            [\n              -80.41374206542969,\n              33.520789053588494\n            ],\n            [\n              -80.41374206542969,\n              33.578014746143985\n            ],\n            [\n              -80.48858642578125,\n              33.578014746143985\n            ],\n            [\n              -80.48858642578125,\n              33.520789053588494\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"30","issue":"3","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49ffe4b07f02db5f7bc7","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"McGilvrey, Frank B.","contributorId":14908,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"McGilvrey","given":"Frank B.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":331807,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}
