This is one of a series of maps that describe the geology and related natural resources in the Kaiparowits coal-basin area. This map is based partly on records of water wells, springs, and coal and petroleum exploration holes, partly on unpublished reports of field evaluations of prospective stock-water well sites by personnel of the U.S. Geological Survey, and partly on a 6-day field reconnaissance by the writer in parts of the mapped area.
Most of the data used to compile this map were collected by the U.S. Geological Survey in cooperation with State, local, and other Federal agencies. Published sources of data included Phoenix (1963), Iorns, Hembree, and Phoenix (1964), Cooley (1965), Feltis (1966), Goode (1966, 1969), and the final environmental impact statement for the proposed Kaiparowits power project (U.S. Bureau of Land Management, 1976).
Few data about the availability or depth of ground water could be obtained for large areas in the Kaiparowits coal basin. In those areas, expected yields of individual wells are inferred from the geology as compiled by Stokes (1964) and Hackman and Wyant (1973), and depths of ground water in wells are inferred largely from the local topography.
El Paso Natural Gas Co., Resources Co., Kaiser Engineers, and Southern California Edison Co. provided specific information regarding the availability and depth of ground water in their exploratory holes on the Kaiparowits Plateau. The cooperation of those firms is gratefully acknowledged.

Infiltration stabilized at rates ranging from 0.7 to 2.2 feet (0.2 to 0.7 meter) per day reflecting changes in hydraulic conductivity of soil horizons. Results of the study indicate that the underlying loess has the capacity to temporarily store about 1 cubic foot (0.03 cubic meter) of water for each 6 cubic feet (0.17 cubic meter) of material. Owing to relatively high hydraulic conductivities of the loess and alluvium, however, moisture continues to move through the unsaturated zone. After application of 21 feet (6 meters) of water, mounding at the water table had a maximum thickness of 2 feet (0.6 meter) at the edge of the pond. Craters dominate the surface of the planet in this area; most are of impact origin, some are of volcanic, origin, and some are of undetermined origin. Martian craters are I general similar in morphology of lunar craters but are more degraded. Analogous morphologies and size-frequency distributions of lunar and Martian craters indicate that both populations are mostly of impact origin (McCauley and others, 1972). Martian 10 pictures of Mercury suggest similar trends on that planet, a further indication that the crating process was exogenous.

These factors will first be stated briefly, and then their influence on systems such as the new 5-day-tape seismic system will be examined in more detail. A seismic amplifier/voltage controlled oscillator unit made up of the following components:\r\n\r\n a) A fixed gain preamplifier with an input resistance of 10K and an internal noise level of 0.5 muVpp referred to the preamp input (0.1 Hz <= freq. <= 30 hz).\r\n\r\n b) An adjustable gain (0 to 42 db in 6 db steps) intermediate amplifier\r\n\r\n c) One or more fixed gain output amplifiers.\r\n\r\n d) Two sections of 6 db/octave bandpass filter serving to couple the 3 amplifier stages together.\r\n\r\n e) Voltage controlled oscillators for each output amplifier to produce modulated FM carriers for recording on separate tape tracks or modulated FM subcarriers for subsequent multiplexing and direct recording on tape in the California Network format.\r\n\r\n3. An analog magnetic tape recorder: e.g. the PI 5100 (15/80 ips recording in the FM mode or in the direct mode with the 'broad-band' variant-of the Cal Net multiplex system, or 15/16 ips recording in the direct mode with the standard Cal Net multiplex system), or the Sony TC-126 cassette recorder operating in the direct record mode with the standard Cal Net multiplex system.\r\n\r\n4. Appropriate magnetic tape playback equipment: e.g., the Bell and Howell 3700-B for the PI-5100 or the Sony TC 126 for its own tapes.\r\n\r\n5. Crustal material in this area of large basins and craters has been redistributed repeatedly by giant impacts. The early historical record of these events is apparently preserved in a complex of interlayered breccias, which may be partly exposed in the walls of the larger craters. Orientale, the last multiringed basin, was formed early in lunar history during the wanning stages of high impact flux by a large body probably impacting the surface obliquely from the northeast. Ejecta from this impact was widely scattered by over the Moon and appears to form some of the plains materials. Although the major landforms of the Oriental basin were developed instantaneously in geologic terms, isostatic adjustments were more protracted; the accompanying structural dislocations including concentric and radial faults in the floor material may have continued up to the time of mare basalt flooding after basin formation. Subsequent impacts have produced craters generally less than 60 km diameter.
